Title: Records of the Hedge Collections : Guide Date(s): Creator: Wyman, Donald ( ). Quantity: 1 linear foot Language of material: English Abstract: Hedges were a subject of particular interest to Donald Wyman ( ), who served as the Arnold Arboretum s Horticulturalist from January 1, 1936 to June 30, In his first year as Horticulturist, Wyman created the Arboretum s first hedge demonstration plot. During 1937 and 1938, and later between 1949 and 1953, Wyman visited a number of agricultural experiment stations, arboreta, botanic gardens, private estates, and historic properties, researching and photographing hedge collections. The collection consists of photographs, slides, color transparencies, inventories, planting lists, and a map of the layout of the 1962 collection. Historical Note Hedges were a subject of particular interest to Donald Wyman ( ), who served as the Arnold Arboretum s Horticulturalist from January 1, 1936 to June 30, In 1935, Wyman received his Ph.D. in horticulture from Cornell University, and in January of that year had published, with co-author Ralph Wright Curtis, Clipped hedges and their uses. (New York State College of Agriculture, Cornell Extension Bulletin 311). During his first year as Horticulturist, Wyman created the Arboretum s first hedge demonstration plot. The collection, which at that time was located on the grounds of the Bussey Institution, included 115 species with each species grown in rows averaging 20 feet in length. The original planting consisted of both deciduous and evergreen specimens that were approximately 3 feet tall at the time of planting. The deciduous specimens were cut to within 6 inches of the ground immediately after planting. During 1937 and 1938, and later between 1949 and 1953, Wyman visited a number of agricultural experiment stations, arboreta, botanic gardens, private estates, and historic properties, researching and photographing hedge collections. In 1957, Wyman published a 20-year assessment of the Arboretum s hedge collection (Arnoldia 17:17-32). Eventually 133 different species were grown as hedges at this site. When the Charles Stratton Dana Greenhouses were erected in 1963, the hedge collection was relocated to occupy part of the new greenhouse site at 1060 Centre Street. Some of the specimens were moved to the new site, with relocation beginning in Additional plants for the new hedge collection were purchased or given as gifts in 1963 and IV B-2 Hedge Collections Page 3 of 30
4 This collection consists primarily of photographs of the Arboretum s hedge collection at its two locations, on the grounds of the Bussey Institution and on the Harvardowned Dana Greenhouse parcel. The majority of the images of the Arboretum s collections were taken by Heman Howard ( ). As Assistant Horticulturist under Donald Wyman, Howard was not only the unofficial photographer, but he was also responsible for checking, mapping and labeling the plants in the living collections. The images mainly consist of views of the Arboretum s hedge collections, or of specific species within these collections. The order of the material is alphabetical by plant name. There are also related materials, such as publications and curation records about the Arboretum s collection. Also included are photographs of hedges in other locations, including institutional and private sites in the United States, Canada and in Europe, taken by Donald Wyman. Many of the local private gardens in Massachusetts are no longer extant, and these images provide some record of their plant collections. The photographs of hedges or hedge collections at other sites are organized either by botanical name or by geographic location, and either institutional or private name. In 1997, in order to accommodate a new design on the Harvard-owned land associated with the greenhouses, the Arboretum s hedge collection was abandoned and the plants were removed. This area, including the site of the former hedge collection, is now occupied by the Leventritt Garden of Shrubs and Vines. Scope and Content The collection consists of photographs, slides, color transparencies, inventories, planting lists, and a map of the layout of the 1962 collection. Arrangement The Records of the Hedge Collections collection is arranged in 4 series: Series I: Photographs (Boxes 1 and 2) Series II: Publications (Box 1) Series III: Curation (Box 1) Series IV: 35mm slides (Box 3) Container List IV B-2 Hedge Collections Page 4 of 30
5 Series I: Photographs Box number 1 Box 1a: Images of the Hedge Demonstration Plot taken between 1950 and 1960 when the collection was located on the grounds of the Bussey Institution. The collection was relocated to the Dana Greenhouse area during (5x7) b&w prints in glassine sleeves, often containing more than 1 copy of the image, arranged alphabetically by genera and including the plant s accession number. Most of the images were either taken on 2/18/1957 or 8/9/1960 and were photographed by Heman Howard.
