2 Rai Studio Rai Studio was founded in June 2007 by Iranian architect Pouya Khazaeli Parsa with the aim of reviving what he considers to be the lost spirit of architecture. Khazaeli Parsa earned his Master's degree in architecture from Tehran Azad University in He has since worked with several internadonally renowned offices, including; Shigero Ban Architects, Shirdel and Partners, NJP Architects. cc Khazaeli Parsa is one of Iran's foremost architects and has been recognized as such in numerous architectural compeddons and art beinnials, most notably; A world Pavilion CompeDDon- 2004, The 4th Tehran sculpture biennial (Kamalledin Behzad Prize), Memar Award ("Best ResidenDal Building"), Memar Award ("First Prize"). As an internadonal firm, Rai Studio have world wide partners in Tokyo, Rio de Janiro,Sydney and Milan.

3 The architect has designed and made this house for his wife. She collaborated in the design process herself, although she is a painter and not an architect. Therefore it was a good opportunity for them in this project to examine their new spadal idea. The house is located in a small village in north part of Iran, near the Caspian Sea. A humid green land which is in a high contrast with the weather of Tehran (the capital) and because of that reason it's a locadon for people who live in Tehran to spend their weekends there (it takes just 3 or 4 hours from Tehran to reach there). 4 The Idea I have always thought there is something strange about people in countries such as Iran. There was a history of 4000 years in culture and architecture and in a short period aeer modernism everything changed. There are peoples who lost their culture and didn t understand modernism either. They just modernized. What I try to do is to create a new architecture with new spadal qualides which is neither Persian nor Modern but at the same Dme contains both qualides. To explain, in this house we have free space on the ground floor similar to what exists in modern architecture ( I mean roots of modern architecture). On the other hand we have a kind of space surrounded by walls on top (the second floor). This space opens toward the center, opens in a verdcal direcdon toward the sky and the ground, a quality that you can find almost in all types of Persian architecture. But the interesdngpart is the space in the middle (first floor). As the modern space on the ground floor and the Persian space in the second floor start a dialog, a new space is born in the middle. This space has got both qualides at the same Dme but is completely different and has got its own personality, we can call it the Modersian space.the dialogue of these two seemingly different spaces is encouraged by the glass lantern and the light shining through it. Horizontal and verdcal movement is controlled through the centrally posidoned verdcal doors by opening or closing them accordingly prioridsing the spaces. 10 My proposal for this building is more concentrated on the interior. What really bothered me at the first glance was the radiators and the air condidoner which are not carefully designed. Having in mind what the architect aimed and combining Persian and Modern architecture which is somehow what I would also like to condnue in my future career, I think each and every element in the building should also have this aim and by pukng industrial and ready made radiators and air condidoners the architect has missed this point. Sustainable design in architecture complements minimalist architecture well both from a pracdcal and aesthedc viewpoint. OrienDng the house correctly and using glass as appropriate for lighdng and heat control can create a clean look with a comfortable feel. Natural materials such as stone, wood and metal can be used and combined to create elegant looks while having a minimal impact on the environment. Reducing the need for ardficial headng and cooling and using underfloor headng means that there are fewer elements to cluler the room, and also saves money. These and other sustainable design principles marry well with minimalism, as sustainability minimises your impact on the environment as well.
