2 ARCH3: A2 Archaeology Resources List World Archaeology Given below is a list of recommended resources. The publishers and ISBN numbers are correct as at going to press. The books included in the lists which follow are not to be regarded as set texts. It is not envisaged that all of the material listed will be used. Some titles on this list may be out of print, but these should be available through libraries. Since centres and students have a completely free choice of substantive case studies and topics within the prescribed themes, there cannot be a definitive list of sources. What is included here beyond the general texts and websites are indicative sources which would be useful in studying some of the more commonly studied case studies. The selections reflect the knowledge and focus of the list compiler. It would be perfectly possible to base a course on say Chinese, Russian and Australasian case studies and use an entirely different list of resources from the one below. Suggestions for additions from teachers and lecturers who use different case studies would be most welcome. Gateway Websites Increasingly these are amongst the most useful resources since they short-cut searching to relevant sites, the great majority of which will be of a high standard. There is nothing wrong with using Wikipedia to look up terms or to get a basic overview, but candidates should certainly not rely on it. The Archaeology Coursebook companion website (see below) was designed for this particular course and contains large numbers of relevant links; these are not repeated here, but are strongly recommended. The Kevin Greene site is more useful for ARCH2, but has useful links for Theme 4 and also to scientific methods of analysis. For detailed case studies, Archnet and Archaeology in Europe are the other most useful entry points. The CBA and Online Archaeology are particularly useful for Theme 4. Archaeology Coursebook Kevin Greene Archnet (USA) CBA Britarch (UK) Discovery (Ireland) BBC Archaeology (UK) Archaeology in Europe Online Archaeology provides the latest news stories klm Copyright 2009 AQA and its licensors. 3 General Texts J Grant, S Gorin and N Fleming The Archaeology Coursebook Routledge, 2008 K Greene C Renfrew and P Bahn D Thomas Archaeology: An Introduction (4th Edition) Archaeology: Theories, Methods and Practice (4th Edition) Archaeology (3rd Edition) American Museum of Natural History Routledge, 2002 Thames and Hudson, Recommended Journals For articles: The Archaeologist British Archaeology Current Archaeology Scientific American Specific Texts These texts will be mainly used to provide case studies. For Themes 1 3 it is likely that a text on say, Roman Britain could be equally useful for Themes 2 and 3 as for Theme 1 so the listing here is not exhaustive. In these cases the text is listed in the first Theme applicable and asterisked to indicate its broader usefulness. Archaeology texts are, with very few exceptions, aimed at undergraduates (year 2 or 3) and above. The academic level of most text is therefore extremely challenging to the average 17 year old. Many of the texts listed are more appropriate for the lecturer to use, distil and perhaps extract key sections from for class use. Where books are written at a level which makes them more accessible the title has been underlined.
