1 OPEN CALL: BANDUNG DESIGN RESIDENCY Bandung Forest Walk / BCCF
2 1 Introduction The British Council and Bandung Creative City Forum are inviting proposals from designers and artists to take part in a residency to collaborate on a project with the creative community of the city of Bandung, Indonesia. The residency is open to UK-based practitioners from any design background, particularly to those whose work engages with research-based, offsite, or socially-engaged elements. Practioners working in other fields with a design crossover, such as visual arts and technology, are also invited to apply. 2 The City of Bandung Bandung is the capital of West Java province and is Indonesia's third largest city. Situated in the beautiful Parahyangan mountains, it was known in colonial times as the Paris of Java because of its European ambiance. Architecturally, Bandung still retains much of its tropical Deco architecture dating from the 1920's. Today Bandung is renowned for its creative local products (ranging from applied art, fashion, apparel and innovative events) and a strong indie music scene. This creative effervescence has always been at the forefront of Indonesia s trend barometer. The city is also driven by the committed spirit of diverse creative communities that are generated independently by Bandung citizens. Each community has different visions, but all are committed to support Bandung to become a liveable city. The city has grown rapidly in recent years and there are increasing development and social issues, from mobility and transport to threats to natural assets. Since 2013 (and until 2018) Bandung has a new Mayor and leader, Ridwan Kamil, a progressive politician with a background in urban architecture and a passion for improving Bandung through creativity and Design. Ridwan Kamil was the former chair of Bandung Creative City Forum (BCCF, ) and during that time made great efforts to work toward the improvement of the city. Now as Mayor, his determination to improve the city can be seen in infrastructure development, creative support and programmes to turn Bandung into a more liveable city. With his design-sensitive personal approach, there are a number of collaborative efforts to build the city between the municipal and the citizens, who mostly make a living in the fields of creative and design industries. 3 Bandung Creative City Forum The selected artist/designer will be hosted by a collective of designers, architects, artists, musicians and curators who have been active in developing the creative heart of Bandung: the Bandung Creative City Forum (BCCF).
3 BCCF aims to provide benefits to the creative community, and the community at large. BCCF is a hub for creative communities in Bandung that has grown over the years as an independent organisation. In each activity taht it promotes, BCCF uses a creativity-based approach concurrently with the city s infrastructure planning and improvement as one of the main factors in expanding creative economic values. BCCF has also participated in initiating and expanding brand strategy and network development, helping to promote Bandung as a creative city internationally. In 2011, BCCF collaborated with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Indonesian Ministry of Environment in organizing TUNZA- International Children and Youth Conference on Environment held in Bandung. In the following years, BCCF continues to collaborate with many other global networks such as the World Islamic Economic Forum Foundation (WIEF), MTV EXIT, d.school HPI Potsdam, ANCB Berlin, Grand Paris and UN-HABITAT. 4 The Residency The British Council and Design Action Bandung (DA.bdg), a sub-hub of Bandung Creative City Forum, are seeking proposals from UK-based designers for a residency to take place in the Autumn of DA.bdg has a mandate to promote a public engagement with design by supporting the research, creation, exhibition, and proliferation of critically challenging, conceptually informed, and forward looking work. DA.bdg s designer in residence programme invites a designer to live and work at a community development area in the northern part of Bandung City, Indonesia: Bandung Wetan. This residency is ideal for a designer whose practices contain researchbased, offsite, or socially-engaged elements. A designer is sought to create a project/intervention/installation/solution to enhance and improve the neighborhood for the citizens and community and can be developed as a longterm and continuous activity. Design Action Bandung aim for the designer in residence programme to enhance the life quality, perspective and knowledge of people that live in Bandung Wetan, specifically in the Pulosari Area, by giving a dynamic perspective to that specific area through social activity, community engagement and creative activity, such as art and design. The hope is that this knowledge and cultural exchange between the visiting designer, local artists/designers and community and the people of Bandung Wetan will give an insight for each party to be formulated and developed as new knowledge or discourse. The chosen designer will be accompanied and will work with one local artist/designer and Rumah Cemara community.
4 The residency support will consist of 1. A grant of 2,500 to cover: return flights to Bandung, visa, a travel allowance within Bandung and subsistence for a 4-week residency 2. One-month accommodation (first few days upon arrival would be spend acclimating at the BCCF space, then the designer will move to a homestay within the community) 3. Induction programme of 3 days with support from the British Council and BCCF to settle into Bandung 4. 6 9 Context Information Articulating Identity: People, Places and Spaces in Bandung Wetan Identity may be defined as the distinctive characteristic belonging to any given individual, or shared by all members of a particular social category or group. Identity may be distinguished from identification; the former is a label, whereas the latter refers to the classifying act itself. Identity is thus best construed as being both relational and contextual, while the act of identification is best viewed as inherently processual. 1 As human civilization grows, their perspective on perceiving all things around them is also growing. Their way of thinking, behavior and way of life is shaped along by the development of their living environment, technology, knowledge, and belief system. These aspects also shaped how an individual see themselves or others. Back then, people, places and spaces are easier to identify and articulated. Each of them has differences that signified them from one to another. But as technology of information has advanced into another era, we now live in an era where it is hard to identify and articulate people, places and spaces in one particular area from another, despite skin and hair color. As they now share the same visual, style, fashion and lifestyle with other parts of the world. This is a common problem for those who live in big cities and that serve as a cultural diaspora. They have a different set of points on identifying people, places and spaces, or they even have a standardized aspect to be identified as who, where and which class of society they belong. These are the people who travel and share their knowledge using the media of information. These are the people who don t go to work to strive for their daily needs but for a higher lifestyle and dreams. On the other hand there are other aspects of a city that are hardly seen by travelers or tourists but is a common occurrence in every big city in the world. The lives of those who live in a heavy populated area in a city or commonly named as a slum area. People in this specific area are striving with their live to fulfill their daily needs. Some of them are dreaming to be the parts of those who live in the other part of the city. Some are already applying the lifestyle by having the things that signified the identity of those who live in another part of the city. This fact raises questions on how people articulate themselves amongst others? How do people articulate other individuals around them? How do different places and spaces give identity to its people? And how do people articulate places and spaces around them. 1 Rummens, J. (1993). Personal Identity and Social Structure in Saint Martin/Saint Martin: a Plural Identities Approach.
