4 Colour&Light - Light quality Brightgreen LED CRI Standard LED 80 CRI There are many measures of light but none better than the human eye. The eye is sensitive to some colours more than others as such, more measurement methods are based on this. CRI is commonly used as the key metric to evaluate light quality. When Incandescent light was most common CRI used very effective as it was representative of the total light quality. With LED however this is not as relevant. The CRI is a measurement of a light s ability to illuminate the spectrum of visible colours. There are 8 standard colours used when testing for CRI values, denoted as R1 R8 in the diagram on the opposite page while leaving out all the other R values (R9-R14). A light that scores 100 on R1-8 has a CRI 0f 100 whereas a light with and average R value or 80 is said to have 80CRI. It is possible however with LED to have a 90 CRI and only 20 on the R9 rating because this is not counted in the CRI average. This means that anything pure Red like blood does not reflect. Under one of these lights people would look flat as blood is an important part of how attractive we perceive them to be. Based on these limits we created Tru-Colour. Tru-Colour is the label we give to lights we have developed that have the highest ability to render colours based on human perception. Under any of our Tru-colour lights people, clothes, food, furnishings and building materials look amazing. Their natural contrast, depth and colour range are look as good as they are. The development of Trucolor is constantly evolving as we research new ways to better peoples experience of architecture and each other. Tru Colour is currently based on the following metrics: High R9 = >80 High CRI = >95 Low R value variation. 5 Designing with light Techniques & technologies Lighting design checklist: Lighting has a huge impact on behaviour and mood. We can feel alert or calm depending on whether cool or warm light is present something that designers are tapping into when creating spaces for a specific use. Biologically, light has a major influence on our circadian rhythm. This is the body s 24-hour cycle that dictates physiological functions, including our appetite and sleeping patterns. The colour temperature and brightness of the light you are exposed to causes the brain to release hormones that tell your body what time of day it is and what it should be doing. When you are surrounded by cool light, your brain sends out signals that cause the release of hormones that keep you awake and alert. Conversely, when you are surrounded by warm light, the brain stops releasing these hormones and begins to release chemicals that encourage your body to relax and prepare for sleep. Along with time, light is commonly referred to as the 4th dimension of architecture. It impacts how we think, how we feel, and how we occupy a space. We can add drama to a space through direct light, or soften a space through indirect light. Employing accent lighting will emphasise the depth of a space, while installing orientation lighting will encourage specific passages and influence the flow of movement through a space. Specially designed LED chips in our Brightgreen Chameleon lights now allow for brightness and correlated colour temperature (CCT) to be controlled using a variety of switch systems, including wireless systems using smartphones and tablets. This means that spaces can be transformed from relaxing to energizing, dramatic to comforting and everything in between at the click of a button or the swipe of a screen. Consider the main activity the area will be used for, or which areas you want to highlight. Tailor your lux level, colour temperature and lighting type according to the main activity. Add depth and layering by highlighting some areas or objects over others. Choose beam angles and shapes that best suit the space higher ceilings need a narrower beam angle in order to give you enough light at floor level, and square-edged spaces benefit from square-beam lighting.
