Explore the Rich History of THE GARRISON CITY Settled in 1623, Dover is the oldest continuous settlement in New Hampshire, and seventh oldest settlement in the United States. Now encompassing approximately 27 square miles, the original township of Dover included the present towns of Dover, Durham, Lee, Madbury, Somersworth, Rollinsford, and parts of Newmarket, Newington, and Greenland. e Garrison City s connection to the Atlantic Ocean through the Piscataqua River to its east, and the Cochecho and Bellamy Rivers running through its center, played a major role in its development contributing to successful shipbuilding and farming industries, and powering its many mills and Dover s brick and cotton industries. Dover became a part of the NH province in 1679, and even served as the state capitol in In 1855, Dover became a city, and in 1973, it celebrated its 350th birthday marks 390 years since settling. "America s Oldest Family Farm," Tuttle s Farm, on Dover Point Road, was originally settled by John Tuttle in 1632 when he came to the New World with a land grant from King Charles II. Tuttle s Farm gained renown as one of the country s oldest continuallyoperating farms, and operation of the farm passed down through 11 generations of Tuttles before being put up for sale in In 2007, the Tuttles sold a conservation easement to the Strafford Rivers Conservancy, thereby permanently protecting 125 acres of land from any use other than farming. e Colonel Paul Wentworth House in neighboring Rollinsford is one of the oldest surviving dwellings constructed in New Hampshire. Built in 1701 during the brief interval between the two bloodiest wars fought on New Hampshire soil, the house serves as a symbol of the resolve of early area pioneers Paul and Abra Wentworth. e house was moved

All kinds of living in YOUR COMMUNITY CNNMoney listed Dover in their 100 Best Places to Live, and it s easy to see why. e New England Seacoast area is unique in its proximity to both ocean and mountains, and Dover s location surrounded by beautiful countryside, while still a short drive to Boston or Portland, makes it an optimal place to live. Diverse housing options in Dover reflect a wide architectural influence. Walk along the streets that surround the downtown area and you ll see plenty of examples of the many different types of architecture used through the city, dating back to the late 1700s. Georgian, Colonial, and Victorian homes combine well with modern apartments and condominiums throughout the residential areas. Several historic mills have been transformed into apartments, offering modern living with picturesque views of rivers, waterfalls and historic bridgework. A modern downtown apartment could make the Henry Law Park your extended backyard, with easy access to the city s many cafes, restaurants, and entertainment venues. New neighborhoods are planned with careful consideration of preserving the natural environment while still allowing for quality homes. e quaint downtown is home to the Joe B. Parks Riverwalk Public Gardens and Lorraine s Corner for meditation and healing. e Dover Community Trail is a city-wide project connecting many parts of the city, providing recreation and alternative transportation options, while protecting natural habitats along the Piscataqua, Cochecho, Bellamy, and Salmon Falls Rivers. Play disc golf in Bellamy Park, enjoy great views from Garrison Hill Tower and Park, or visit the pristine shoreline, tidal creeks and wetlands of the Bellamy River Wildlife Reserve. Dog lovers can let their pooch roam at the Long Hill Memorial Park. Enjoy your Dover community!
