1 Wildlife Ecology Internship at Point Reyes National Seashore guidance of the Wildlife Program of the Integrated Resources Division at Point Reyes National Seashore and assist in documenting and assessing the condition of Wildlife populations within the park. INTERN EXPERIENCES (may vary depending on intern skills and NPS needs) The western snowy plover monitoring and protection program field work includes maintaining beach closure areas, surveying for nesting plovers, protecting plover nests from predators using wire exclosures, tracking plover nest success, and following plover fledgling success. The Northern spotted owl monitoring program monitors occupancy and reproductive success at approximately 40 owl territories each year. The majority of the nesting is complete by early June, but interns will have the opportunity to join NPS biologists on remaining surveys and in completing nest tree measurements. The western pond turtle program is in its third year, with the goal of protecting turtle nests, collecting eggs, and then hatching the eggs and rearing the juveniles at the San Francisco Zoo. Juvenile turtles will be re-introduced to ponds where turtles no longer exist in both Point Reyes and Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Interns will join NPS biologists as they trap turtles for VHF radio tag deployment, track tagged turtles using telemetry, and monitor ponds for nesting activity. Our tule elk program monitors elk locations on park ranches, collects fecal samples for disease monitoring, and tracks collared animals. The Marin Wildlife Picture Index Program maintains 30 wildlife cameras stationed on National Park Service lands. Interns will assist in the maintenance of these cameras and cataloging photographs. Some prior field work experience desired

2 Range/Vegetation Ecology Internship at Point Reyes National Seashore guidance of the Range Management Program of the Integrated Resources Management Division at Point Reyes National Seashore and assist with documenting and assessing the condition of rangeland habitats within the park. INTERN DUTIES Vegetation monitoring in coastal grasslands Native plant seed collection and maintenance/propagation of plants in on-site nursery Rangeland resource mapping, monitoring, and maintenance (e.g. fences, water features, weeds, soil) Data entry and data management related to the above Some prior field work experience desired Coursework in plant ecology and field sampling

3 Dune Restoration and Rare Plant Internship at Point Reyes National Seashore Management within the National Park Service (NPS). Specifically, the intern will work under the technical guidance of the Vegetation Management Program of the Integrated Resources Management Division at Point Reyes National Seashore. The intern will assist in documenting and assessing the condition and management of native, non-native, and rare plant populations within the park. INTERN DUTIES Vegetation monitoring of dune restoration efforts in the Seashore. These monitoring efforts are aimed at judging the effectiveness of restoration treatment efforts and the success in restoring dunes invaded by European beach grass and iceplant to more natural systems that support at least 11 listed species. Assist in monitoring rare plants both in the dunes and in other vegetation communities (e.g., wetlands, grasslands). Invasive plant removal, which will primarily involve manual removal, but may involve some spot herbicide treatment. Mapping efforts using GPS and data entry and validation using Excel.. Some knowledge of how to use a GPS unit for both mapping features and to navigate to already established points and transects, an understanding of how to upload and download GPS data to the computer, and experience with data entry. Some knowledge of ArcGIS is a plus. Working knowledge of California plant species, with knowledge of dune plant species a plus, as well as experience doing both plot- and transect-based monitoring. Coursework in plant ecology and field sampling National Seashore, visit our website at: : To apply, go to

4 Archaeology Internship at Point Reyes National Seashore This internship is an opportunity to get exposure to and experience working in Cultural Resources guidance of the Archeology Program Point Reyes National Seashore to document and assess the condition of archaeological sites within the park.
