1 Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES Lessons Learned from Residential Projects SUN-B1 American Society of Landscape Architects Annual Meeting - Denver, CO Pilot projects recently tested the effectiveness and relevancy of the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES. Moderated by ASLA s SITES staff liaison, the principals of two award-winning west coast firms share their experience gaining SITES certification for single family and multi-family residential projects. Learn successful strategies for approaching sustainable design with the goals of beauty and abundance. Learning Objectives 1. Understand what SITES provides for designers and clients of residential projects. 2. Gain practical knowledge and tools to maximize ecosystem services on residential projects of all scales. 3. View in-depth strategies behind two highly successful completed residential projects that meet SITES standards and overcome obstacles for meeting SITES benchmarks.. Discover how to incorporate SITES sustainable design approach into your practice. Speaker Bios Liz Guthrie, ASLA LEED Green Associate Washington D.C. Liz Guthrie, ASLA, LEED Green Associate, serves as ASLA s staff liaison to the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES and coordinates member involvement in SITES, working with volunteers, leadership and other related partner organizations to promote and advance the work of SITES and key issues of sustainability. Liz s experience includes work as a landscape architect and planner on both the east and west coasts, and has held teaching positions with several museums and independent schools. Liz holds a Master s Degree in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University, and a Bachelor s Degree in Growth and Structure of Cities from Haverford College. Susan VanAtta, FASLA VAI/VanAtta Associates, Inc. Susan Van Atta, FASLA, leads VAI/VanAtta Associates, Inc., a widely published and diverse practice based on California s Central Coast. Recognized with State and National ASLA, AIA and APA awards, Susan has been on the other side of the table by serving on design and award juries for the AIA, CNU and others. An author of a book on California native plants, her philosophy regarding sustainable design has been published in journals as well. Her 3 years of commitment and contributions to landscape architecture s fitting role in sustainable design began with degrees in Environmental Studies and later, Landscape Architecture. Past ASLA Annual meeting presentations include Inside the LA Studio in which her office presented their environmentally sensitive approach to design. Margie Grace, APLD GDA/Grace Design Associates, Inc. Margie Grace, APLD; Grace Design Associates, Inc. (GDA. Margie Grace is a landscape designer and licensed landscape contractor with 3 years experience designing and building residential and commercial projects. GDA has received numerous awards, and their projects have been published both nationally and internationally. Victoria Garden Mews is a multifamily redevelopment project in historic downtown Santa Barbara, designed and built by Grace Design Associates, Inc. and is the first-ever residential project to achieve SITES certification. Margie has served as president of the Green Building Alliance and received the Landscape Designer of the Year Award from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers. 1

Re-use salvaged materials: Eucalyptus removed in favor of Oak Trees used for trim wood, etc. b. Use regional materials: Sliced Santa Barbara sandstone used for paving.. Site Design- Human Health + Well-being a. Support physical activity: Man cave, pool and spa, bocce ball, basketball, ping-pong, hiking trails, and more. b.
