Greenville Independent School District Additions and Renovations to Crockett Elementary School, L.P. Waters Early Childhood Center, Houston Education Center and Greenville Middle School Crockett Elementary School Introduction Crockett Elementary School is one of several schools planned to be renovated and expanded as part of the May 2014 bond as a way to: Provide increased security Improve parking and traffic issues Address aging facilities Increase student capacity Security Crockett Elementary School requires a controlled vestibule to meet the District standards for security. In order to create this vestibule, additional square footage is required at the main entry of the building due to an already cramped administration area. Increased visibility and personnel dedicated to managing visitor check-in will be added. Laminated glass will provide visibility as well as increased protection. Access control will be added to provide keyless entry and monitor all exterior doors, and the existing surveillance and fire alarm systems will be expanded and upgraded. Emergency lock-down and alarm buttons in the administration area will also add to the security at the campus. Site Design The existing site does not provide sufficient parking for staff or visitors, and there is not a sufficient bus or parent drive. Additional parking will be provided, as well as dedicated lanes for parent and bus traffic. Parents will continue to be in the front of the building, however, buses will be directed around the back of the building which will have a new covered area leading to the gym and new classroom wing. This allows bus and parent traffic to be separate, which is safer for the students. Drainage issues on the site will be addressed, portable buildings removed, and additional exterior lighting will increase security. Aging Facilities When this facility was originally built, the size of the administration area was considerably smaller than what we see today. Not only were there fewer spaces, but the restrooms and clinic were not required to be handicap compliant, and therefore required less square footage. As we are adding to the administration area to create a controlled vestibule, it creates an opportunity to give the administration area a face lift, as well as solve several of the accessibility concerns that exist. The clinic and adjoining restroom will be renovated to be handicap accessible, as well as the single user restroom for the administrative staff. The offices are on a higher floor level than the entry, which results in steps in the lobby area, and wheelchairs must access the space from a side entry through the corridor. With these modifications, a ramp will be created within the waiting area, so that everyone can access the offices directly from that space. The gym is currently not air conditioned or connected to the main building. With the addition of a connecting corridor and ramp, the students will be able to access the gym without being exposed to the weather. Also, once renovated, the gym will be air conditioned. Increase Student Capacity Currently, there are three portable buildings in a courtyard area of the campus. In order to house those students in permanent classrooms, an addition will be created at the back of the school, towards the new bus drive. This will have 6 classrooms, a bank of restrooms, and a storage room. This will allow the portable buildings to be removed, and free up the concrete courtyard space for outdoor learning. With the current student capacity, the cafeteria is no longer large enough to accommodate the student population. In order to expand the cafeteria, the stage will be converted into dining space, and a new stage will be constructed as part of the addition at the front of the school. The new stage will be lower than the existing stage, handicap accessible, and can also be used as additional dining space if the need arises. Greenville Independent School District Additions and Renovations to Crockett Elementary School, L.P. Waters Early Childhood Center, Houston Education Center and Greenville Middle School L.P. Waters Early Childhood Center Introduction L.P. Waters Early Childhood Learning Center is one of several schools planned to be renovated as part of the May 2014 bond as a way to: Provide increased security Improve parking and traffic issues Address aging facilities Security The entry vestibule at L.P. Waters Early Childhood Learning Center requires modification to meet the District standards for controlled access. Site Design The existing site does not provide sufficient parking for staff or visitors, which has forced parents to park off-site if they wish to walk their child into the building. The current configuration for pick-up works well, however drop off is challenging. Due to the increased numbers of parents walking their children in, additional parking is required. Additional parking will be provided to accommodate staff and visitors. The abandoned portable building will be removed, freeing up a portion of the site for green space. Drainage issues have plagued this campus, and will be addressed through several measures. Exterior lighting and additional fencing will be added to increase security. Aging Facilities The building is one of the older campuses in the District, and requires upgrades in both finishes and in handicap accessibility. Since this facility houses the youngest students in the District, flooring is one of the finishes most heavily worn through the years. The focus will be on the replacement of carpet in the classrooms with vinyl composition tile (VCT). This will allow for more thorough cleaning, and is costeffective. Ceiling tile will also be replaced in several areas. The special education restroom will be renovated to bring it into compliance with current handicap accessibility requirements. NARRATIVE Huckabee Additions and Renovations, Greenville Independent School District 4

Houston Education Center Introduction Houston Education Center is one of several schools planned to be renovated as part of the May 2014 bond as a way to: Provide increased security Improve parking and traffic issues Address aging facilities Security Houston Education Center requires a controlled vestibule to meet the District standards for security. Greenville Independent School District Additions and Renovations to Crockett Elementary School, L.P. Waters Early Childhood Center, Houston Education Center and Greenville Middle School Site Design The existing site does not provide sufficient parking for staff or visitors. Additional parking will be provided, with separate lots for staff and students. Currently, the handicap accessible entry is around the back of the school, however with the addition of off-street parking, the accessible entry will be able to be moved to the front of the school, which will allow for a single point of entry for all visitors and students. Drainage issues on the site will be addressed, and additional exterior lighting and perimeter fencing will increase security. Aging Facilities The building is one of the older campuses in the District, and requires upgrades in both finishes and in handicap accessibility. Flooring in common areas will be replaced, and asbestos abatement may be required in some areas. Doors in the original portion of the building will be replaced, as well as door hardware on all doors which are required to have lever handles for handicap accessibility. NARRATIVE Huckabee Additions and Renovations, Greenville Independent School District 5

Greenville Middle School Introduction Greenville Middle School is one of several schools planned to be renovated as part of the May 2014 bond as a way to: Provide increased security Address aging facilities Security Greenville Middle School requires a controlled vestibule to meet the District standards for security. Existing space will be renovated and repurposed in order to create the traffic flow desired for a vestibule to be effective. Greenville Independent School District Additions and Renovations to Crockett Elementary School, L.P. Waters Early Childhood Center, Houston Education Center and Greenville Middle School Aging Facilities Due to the age of the building, certain components are in need of replacement. The roof has exceeded its expected life span, and the most critical areas will be addressed as part of the bond. Additional items on the exterior also need replacement, such as the windows at the Cafeteria, sealant around openings in the masonry and in building joints, and repairs to the mortar joints in the cast stone and brick. At the original building, the masonry parapets require structural modifications for stability. Mechanical equipment and related piping will be replaced with a more efficient system. Various code corrections will be made in some areas of the campus, in order to meet handicap accessibility requirements. Carpeted areas will receive new vinyl composition tile, focusing on classroom spaces in the oldest portions of the school. Some asbestos abatement will be required in this facility based up on the age of the building and materials used at that time.
