4 History of ISA Standards & Practices 1945 The Instrument Society of America is founded in Pittsburgh, PA. 1949 The first ISA standard RP 5.1 Instrument Flow Plan Symbols is issued. Today ISA is accredited as a standards development organization (SDO) by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and recognized by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) TC65. Over 4,000 individuals are members of over 140 standards committees and subcommittees.
American National Standards ANSI American National Standards Institute Governing body for US National standards Since 1918 Originally AESC (American Engineering Standards Committee) Over 10,000 American National Standards Over 125,000 companies represented Principles Openness Balance Due Process Consensus 5
International Standards IEC International Electrotechnical Commission Governing body for international standards on electrical and electronic related standards Since 1906 Over 6,000 IEC standards and reports Over 95% of the world population is represented 6
