hello! Backgrounder Design Jams September 17-19, 2018 Sidewalk Toronto: Backgrounder 1

Have you heard about the new waterfront neighbourhood in Toronto called Quayside? If not, we thought we d provide some background information and answers to the most common questions we get about this project. But first... What are Design Jams? As part of the Sidewalk Toronto public engagement plan for the Quayside project, a series of daylong Design Jams are being held providing a unique opportunity to proactively engage the public in city building and placemaking conversations that will shape the future of our city and this new neighbourhood. The Design Jams will bring together a group of community members alongside local subject matter experts and the Sidewalk Toronto project team so that we can have conversations about the design of our city. At the design jams, participants will be given an opportunity to join a fun day of hands-on collaboration and offer their perspectives. They will leave with a first-hand experience of the work that needs to happen to build better cities. How will the ideas generated at the Design Jams be used in Quayside? Our commitment to meaningful public engagement, collaboration, and co-creation puts people at the centre of Sidewalk Toronto. Together we hope to build a new kind of city for all of us. Some of the values that inform our approach to engagement include: Embracing diversity across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. A belief that every resident should have a voice. Working in good faith in service of the public good. Ensuring our work is inclusive of and accessible to all. Respect for continuous learning and the expertise of lived experience. A belief that solving complex issues requires genuine collaboration. The activities today are part of our public engagement plan. The information gathered will inform and help shape Sidewalk Toronto s Master Innovation and Development Plan, including public policy and regulatory impacts. It will spark further research and investigation into design possibilities for the public realm and residential development. Sidewalk Toronto: Backgrounder 2

Key Information About Quayside About Quayside: Waterfront Toronto is working with Sidewalk Labs to create a plan for a new kind of mixed-use complete community on Toronto s waterfront. Our work will combine forwardthinking urban design and new digital technology to create a people-centred neighbourhood, called Quayside, that achieves precedent-setting levels of sustainability, affordability, mobility, and economic opportunity. To realize this ambition we have embarked on an extensive process of consultation and collaboration with Torontonians, as well as leading global thinkers, that will inform and help shape the Master Innovation and Development Plan. Where is Quayside? Quayside is located at the Parliament Slip at the foot of Parliament Street at Lake Shore Boulevard East just southeast of Downtown Toronto Where are we in the process? After exploring opportunities all over the world, Sidewalk Labs responded to a Request For Proposals issued in March 2017 by Waterfront Toronto to identify an innovation and funding partner. Following a rigorous evaluation process involving several local and international firms, Waterfront Toronto selected Sidewalk Labs. Throughout 2018 and 2019, extensive public consultation and stakeholder engagement will inform and help shape Sidewalk Toronto s Master Innovation and Development Plan, including public policy and regulatory impacts. The Plan will be subject to approval by the boards of both Waterfront Toronto and Sidewalk Labs. Its implementation will require a variety of municipal and governmental approvals.
