Boundary Rd Week 1 MONDAY How do I know which is my recycling week? Where do I place my bin? Each bin has a temporary delivery sticker which shows a specific street address. The sticker also shows your collection day and whether you are Week 1 or Week 2 for recycling collections. Each bin is electronically identified and is registered to your address. Please note: Some collection days may change. See the maps on page 8-11 to check your correct collection day. 231 Boundary Rd 231 Week No. Week 1 MONDAY Please don t place the bins too close to each other as the truck won t be able to pick them up. Create a gap using the blue crate as a guide. Please position bins for collection away from other objects and close to the kerb. Please place your bins out on the verge where they were delivered to you. This is because the trucks collect on their left in the direction of traffic flow. In some cases trucks cannot service certain roads or can only collect from one side of the road. This means some residents will need to take their bins to a collection point or may need to place them on the opposite side of the road for collection. Make sure lids are closed and the front of the bin faces the road (wheels are at the back). Place them away from cars and overhead hazards, e.g. trees and overhead power lines. Please place your red bin to the left Please do not place bins on the road. Use the blue crate width as a spacer. What happens to my recycling? How Where to reduce else could your I take waste my unwanted items? What happens to my recycling after it goes in the yellow bin? All materials placed in the recycling bin will be compacted in Rotorua and sent to Smart Environmental s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at Kopu. This process sorts recycling into separate materials. Once separated the products are baled and then sold in NZ and overseas and turned into new products. What are some of our recyclables turned into? Paper and cardboard are used in new paper and cardboard products e.g. packaging material etc. Aluminium is melted down and turned into new aluminium cans etc. Tin cans are melted and turned into new steel products. Plastics are turned into new plastic products (e.g. plastic containers, pallets, clothing, film etc). s to reduce your waste Choose products with little or no packaging. Give unwanted clothes to opportunity shops or use clothing bins Start a compost heap or worm farm, then use the compost/vermicast in your garden. Frequently asked questions If I live up a steep or a long driveway, will the new bin work for me? Most people in other parts of our district are able to make the new bins and crate system work for them. Check out our website for more information, but if after a few months you are not able to make the new bin work, give us a call and we will work with you to find a solution. I live on a farm, can I put my farm rubbish in these new bins? Our rubbish and recycling service is intended for household wastes only. Rubbish such as silage wrap can t be accepted and alternative arrangements will need to be made, please don t hesitate to contact us if you need further help. Why do my bins need to be in a specific place? The trucks that collect your rubbish and recycling are big and can cause an obstruction and some roads just aren t suitable for them. Their route sometimes only goes one way along a road and the trucks can only collect on the left. The bins need to be where they can be emptied safely. Why must the lid be down on the bin when placed at kerbside? The lid must be down to stop contents from spilling or blowing out, to keep animals out and to keep the contents dry. Why do you ask me to space my bins away from other crates and bins? This gives the truck s mechanical arm the room it needs to pick up the bin. As a guide, use the blue crate as a spacer. Make sure lids are closed and the front of the bin faces the road (wheels are at the back). Why do we have to keep the glass separate and not just put it in the yellow bin? We need to keep the glass separate in order to most effectively recycle it into new bottles. Please do not put any glass into the yellow recycling bin, as it makes it very difficult to recycle paper and cardboard and it is hard on the machinery used to sort the recycling. What happens if I put something that can t be recycled in my recycle bin? Smart Environmental monitor what comes out of bins as they do the collection. An onscreen camera checks on the type of rubbish and recycling emptied from your bin, and in the case of incorrect material or overflowing bins the contractor may not empty your bin and will leave a sticker to let you know why your bin was not collected. What happens if my bins or crate are damaged or stolen? Please inform the Council if your bin needs to be replaced. Each bin has a unique ID number that can be scanned to identify it to your property, but only if someone else puts your bin out for collection can we track it. If I sell my house, can I take my bins and blue crate with me? No, the recycling and rubbish bins and the blue crate are allocated to the property and must stay with the property. The bins belong to Smart Environmental and Rotorua Lakes Council. If you re moving to another house in the Rotorua Lakes District, a recycling, rubbish bin and crate should be waiting for you there.
