3 WHEN WILL MY RECYCLING BE COLLECTED? Your recycling will be collected at the same time as your general rubbish: Monday: Eastbourne, Eastern Bays, Seaview, Gracefield, Waiwhetu, Waterloo, Epuni East, Fairfield, Moera Tuesday: Petone, Alicetown, Hutt Central, Woburn, Epuni West Wednesday: Western Hills (except Kelson), Liverton Road, Haywards Hill, Belmont, Manor Park, Boulcott, Avalon, Hebden Crescent. Jars, tins and plastic containers are great for storage. Friends and community groups may be able to use your pre-loved appliance, garment or furniture you have replaced. Electronic items may be able to be repaired and on-sold by Earthlink a social enterprise that provides supported employment. They are located at 22 Eastern Hutt Road, Wingate, Lower Hutt 5019 and can be contacted by admin@earthlink.org.nz or telephone For larger items or quantities they can collect from your home. RECYCLE Please do recycle and to close the loop support the recycling industry by purchasing recycled products. COMPOSTING/WORM FARMS Composting, worm farming and Bokashi are great ways to turn your kitchen scraps and garden rubbish into usable compost. It s easy and fantastic for your garden. Collection days and areas can be found on Hutt City Council s website: huttcity.govt.nz/rubbish HOW DO I PACK MY RECYCLING BIN? For the best use of space: Bundle up your newspapers, cardboard and advertising mail with string, or put them in supermarket bags and tie them up Squash your plastic containers and aluminium and steel cans in supermarket bags and tie them up Recycling plastics are graded from 1 to 7 except for polystyrene (eg, meat trays and packaging).
5 BIN MAINTENANCE AT COMMUNITY RECYCLING STATIONS When contractors are emptying bins at recycling stations please keep clear until the driver has moved the caution no entry road cone from the area. General maintenance issues at recycling stations can be reported to Hutt City Council on KERBSIDE RECYCLING BINS You can purchase your own teal kerbside recycling bin at Hutt City Council, 30 Laings Road, Lower Hutt. You can also purchase an Enviro-Flexinet that helps to keep your recyclables in the bin on windy days. Or you can use our Community Recycling Stations, especially after a party or celebration. Shampoo bottles Soft drinks bottles Steel cans (eg, baked beans) Telephone books Yoghurts containers (clean) WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR RECYCLING? Your recycling is processed and turned into new products. WHAT HAPPENS TO GLASS? Glass from Lower Hutt is 100% recycled in New Zealand. Glass is sent to Auckland where it s melted and remade into glass bottles. WHAT HAPPENS TO TINS? Tins are squashed and tied together and sent to Auckland. They are melted down to make flat sheets of steel which are then made into new products. WHAT HAPPENS TO ALUMINIUM? Aluminium cans are baled and sent to local metal recyclers. They send it on to Bluff to be melted into ingots (bars of metal) for making into new drink cans. WHAT HAPPENS TO PLASTIC? Plastic is baled and the majority is sold to Southeast Asian countries. The plastic is then chipped, washed and melted down and made into things like car bumpers, motor oil, pipes, pails, new trash bags, pallets, non-food bottles and material fibres that make things such as polar-fleece clothing, insulation batts, sails for boats, carpet and fibrefill
6 WHAT HAPPENS TO PAPER? Around 85 per cent of all the paper and cardboard is collected by Oji - Full Circle Recycling - for recycling within New Zealand at our own Oji Fibre Solutions paper mills. Each year these mills process over 230,000 tonnes of cardboard and paper and turn this used material back into new packaging grade materials. The balance of the fibre and all other recyclables (eg, plastic film and shrinkwrap, plastic containers, steel and aluminium cans) are sold to either local re-manufacturers or international buyers for recycling overseas. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT NON-RECYCLABLE PRODUCTS Oil and paint The correct way to dispose of oil and paints is either keep the product until Hutt City Council holds its annual free Hazardous Waste Collection at the Riverbank Car Park or contact the Silverstream Landfill on the correct way to dispose. Polystyrene and food The correct way to dispose of polystyrene and food is to dispose of it in an approved Hutt City Council refuse bag and place on the kerbside on rubbish collection day. Food should be composted. Whiteware products Local firm Earthlink runs a recycling and retail shop, Waste Smart, where all your pre-loved treasures can find a home. Items for Waste Smart can be dropped off at Silverstream Landfill or you can call the shop on , a collection service is available at a small charge or free. Contamination Non-recyclable products placed in recycling station bins will contaminate the recycling load and when recycling is contaminated, contractors cannot recycle the load and product is disposed of at the landfill. Community Recycling Stations PLEASE HELP TO KEEP OUR COMMUNITY RECYCLING STATIONS TIDY/FREE FROM RUBBISH It s illegal to dump rubbish at our stations. You could be fined up to $400. Illegal dumping also tends to attract rats, flies and other vermin. Items that cannot be reused or recycled is rubbish that must be taken to the Silverstream Landfill or placed in a pre-paid Hutt City Council bag that can be collected during your weekly kerbside collection. The bags can be purchased from supermarkets and some dairies. If you spot someone dumping rubbish call Hutt City Council on Q. What can I do if I see someone dumping rubbish illegally? A. Hutt City Council requires as much information as possible: Date, time and location of the incidents, a photograph helps if it is safe to do so A description of rubbish or what happened Was it put in the bin or beside it? Registration/make/model/colour of the vehicle involved and description of the driver Q. What do I do if I spot someone tagging or damaging Council recycling bins? A. Report it to police. Call the Crime Stoppers Hotline (24 hour FREEPHONE and Information is anonymous).
