It s really about our future. THE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS: By recycling and disposing of waste in a responsible, efficient manner we can save and prolong our natural resources. If the whole world s population was to consume the way we do in Sweden, we would need a few more earths for us to exist. So as an individual belonging to a bigger community, it s more than critical to try to reduce your own waste production so that you can contribute to a better environment and a more sustainable development for the future. 2 On average, a single person in Sweden generates around 510 kg of waste per year. We can minimize that number by simply giving thought to what we consume and through sorting out our waste. Our rubbish contains both harmful and valuable materials, and if we are diligent in sorting it out we re actually able to efficiently recycle the better part of what s thrown as rubbish in the form of new/recycled products and energy. In addition hazardous substances can be dealt with more precaution and safe methods of disposal. 11 In this brochure you ll find all the tips we have up our sleeves to help you sort out your rubbish. A recycled aluminium can saves the energy required to make a new can equivalent to the energy needed to power A spoonful of mercury is enough to poison an entire lake.

It s smart to exchange stuff. BULKY WASTE: You can throw away bulky waste of different materials such as electronic, gardening and hazardous waste as well as home appliances at the municipal recycling centers. There s even a container for clothes collection on location. You can also switch out your unwanted items for something else at the trade-in shed in Brunna Recycling Center. Exchange one item for another regardless the worth. 10 HAZARDOUS WASTE: A lot of objects in our own households contain dangerous substances that can cause damage to both our health and the environment. It s incredibly important that you dispose of it at the municipal recycling centers: Brunna Recycling Center and Skällsta Recycling Center so that the hazardous waste can be dealt with the correct way. Examples of hazardous waste: Pesticides, photo chemicals, glue/ adhesives, solvents, oil, glycol, used oil filters, light bulbs, fluorescent lights, small batteries, car batteries, spray bottles, strong household cleaning chemicals, and mercury thermometers. 3 Specialized routines: Medicinal waste and syringes should always be taken to a pharmacy to be disposed of. Ingrained woods are also sorted out from the rest of other waste woods and disposed of at the recycling centers. An incinerated wooden kitchen chair would let a 10 W low energy light bulb run for 225 hours. It takes nature 450 years to break down a single plastic bottle.

plastförpackningar Every banana peel matters. Here you throw: jars, containers, bottles, buckets, bags, Styrofoam, shrink wrap and refill containers. Remember: Sortera korkar och lock av andra material för sig. Recycling: New raw plastic can be repurposed into make new packaging, trash bins, building materials, flower pots and cable insulation amongst many other things. 4 FOOD WASTE: Approximately half of what we throw away today is food waste that is biologically degradable. We are working hard and striving towards waste processing by re-using - recycling what we have already used. A step towards that direction is taking care of food waste and making it a part of the natural Eco-cycle. HERE YOU THROW: food waste from both unprepared and prepared meals, bread, vegetables, root vegetables, fruit, coffee grounds, tealeaves, tea bags, rice, milk, pasta, egg, eggshells, shellfish, smaller bones from meat, fish and birds, fresh cut flowers, uncoloured paper towels and napkins.. PAPER Here you throw: milk carton, egg cartons, juice packaging, wrapping paper, toilet paper and other paper packaging. REMEMBER: to remove plastic bags and stick-on flyers (adhesive). Envelopes should be thrown as residual waste RECYCLING: Recycled paper makes new raw paper that can be used to make new packaging, plasterboards and finishes 9 REMEMBER TO: use the brown paper bags and the specialized basket designed to hold said paper bags. Let wet food waste drain in the sink. Change bags often; at least once every 3 days. Only fill the bag up to the marked line. Fold the bag properly before you throw it in the food waste bin. RECYCLING: We extract renewable energy such as biofuel and bio manure from food waste. Biofuels can be converted into electricity, heat or transportation fuel. NEWSPAPERS Here you throw: newspapers, catalogues, flyers and brochures (like this one). Remember: Tto remove plastic bags and stick-on flyers (adhesive). Envelopes should be thrown as residual waste. Recycling: newspapers and recycled paper are made into new paper products. Did you know that 4 bags of food waste store enough energy to drive a mid-sized car a whopping 10 km? If all the caps in Sweden were recycled, there would be enough steel to make 2000 new mid-sized cars,

3 OUT OF 4 PACKAGES ARE RECYCLED: If you can t fit all the materials you want to sort out at your curb-side collection, remember that you can leave newspapers, packaging made of glass, metal, plastic and cardboard at the municipal recycling centers. GlaSS Here you throw: Bottles and jars made of both coloured and uncoloured glass. Make sure to separate between the coloured and the uncoloured glass. Remember: to sort out caps, lids and corks beforehand depending on the type of material they re made from. Återvinning collected glass will be used in the production of new glass packaging, insulation material or as an additive in concrete.. 8 MEtallförpackninGar Here you throw: cans, tubes, capsules, foil molds and disposable barbecues. Remember: Paint cans and adhesive residue (glues) are considered hazardous waste so sort them out with that in mind. Frying pans and such are sorted out as non-combustible waste. Recycling: The materials are delivered to a smelting plant and melted down to make new products. An example of that would be construction steel and aluminium strips. 5 You can make 38 cups of coffee just from your newspaper. That s how much energy that could be saved if it gets recycled. If all glass products collected in a year were placed side by side, there would be enough to circle the globe.

How hard can it be? RESIDUAL WASTE: A significant portion of home waste can be sorted out for recycling. Whatever is left behind after sorting out the food waste, packaging, magazines and hazardous waste is called residual waste and it s exactly as it sounds, residual waste is simply what remains after sorting everything else out. The better you are with sorting out waste at home, the less there will be for you to throw in the green residual waste bin. HERE YOU THROW: pads, flowers, dirt, diapers, cigarettes, 6 vacuum cleaner bags, washing/scrubbing brushes, cat litter, envelopes, pens, snus, candles, tampons, toothbrushes, chewing 7 gum, wet wipes etc. RECYCLING: Residual waste is incinerated and is used for the production of electricity and district heating. The residual waste from a single household consisting of four people is enough to keep your fridge running Paper fibers can be recycled up to 7 times before they're worn out.
