CITIZEN AND STAKEHOLDER PARTICIPATION IS THIS JUST ANOTHER EU PROJECT? OR IS IT FOR REAL? MORTEN DD HANSEN, NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM, AARHUS

LANDSCAPE AND NATURE MANAGEMENT WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT? WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? HOW TO DO IT ;-)

WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT? MAIN CHALLENGES IN CITIZEN PARTICIPATION DISINFORMATION (INTENTIONAL) MISINFORMATION (NON-INTENTIONAL) MISINTERPRETATION

We need to improve biodiversity and therefore we have established three national parks in Denmark.

No national parks will be implemented without citizen approval.

The world is heating dramatically due to man-made carbon dioxide emissions, and we can prevent it.

Biologists and all other environmentalists are socialists or even communists who only want to destroy the civil society and private property. The same applies to teachers and journalists The red-green mafia! This is disinformation. The ultimate result is bitterness. ;-)

The main effect of wetland restoration is to protect the marine environment from excess nitrogen.

Organic farms sustain more biodiversity than conventional farms. We need more organic farming to conserve biodiversity.

Nature and biodiversity because is crucial to mankind, to our physical and mental health. We have to protect nature. I call this mis-information. It sounds correct and it is intended to be correct. But in many cases it is just an alibi for sound policies that could not be implemented with the real arguments. The ultimate result is bitterness (again) ;-)

The forest cover in Denmark has increased dramatically since 1800. It must be good for forest biodiversity.

When 98% of the tropical rainforest was cleared on this island, avian diversity nevertheless increased 10%. What is the problem?

There is no problem with the grey partridge in Denmark. On my estate I counted 38 breeding pairs

The breeding population of Crane, Barnacle Goose, Peregrine Falcon, White-tailed Eagle and Red Kite is increasing dramatically. As these species are in the top of the food chain, this must reflect an improvement of the Danish nature?

It s a beautiful landscape with a unique nature. We have a lot of biodiversity. We have roe deer, hares, pheasants and ducks. There shall be no highway crossing this area. Cool, but are there any sand lizards?

Young people cannot be made to care for nature...

SET THE DEFINITIONS FROM THE BEGINNING What is nature? It is what emerges. What is high quality nature? Hard to replace. Why protect it? Because it is our duty.

This is where the dialogue begins. We can all get wiser and most people love it!

BACK TO CITIZEN PARTICIPATION AND THE LIFESCAPE PROJECT

SET THE DEFINITIONS FROM THE BEGINNING What is a landscape? Noting What is that a high the landscape quality landscape? has important public interest role in the cultural, ecological, Why protect environmental it? The EU and tells social us ;-) fields, and constitutes a resource favourable to economic activity and whose protection, management and planning can contribute to job creation;

Noting that the landscape has an important public interest role in the cultural, ecological, environmental and social fields, and constitutes a resource favourable to economic activity and whose protection, management and planning can contribute to job creation;

Aware that the landscape contributes to the formation of local cultures and that it is a basic component of the European natural and cultural heritage, contributing to human well-being and consolidation of the European identity;

Noting that developments in agriculture, forestry, industrial and mineral production techniques and in regional planning, town planning, transport, infrastructure, tourism and recreation and, at a more general level, changes in the world economy are in many cases accelerating the transformation of landscapes;

Wishing to respond to the public s wish to enjoy high quality landscapes and to play an active part in the development of landscapes;

Believing that the landscape is a key element of individual and social well-being and that its protection, management and planning entail rights and responsibilities for everyone;

Intensive awareness-raising and capacity-building campaign will accompany all actions in the pilot areas. Its elements will be local media coverage, activities for children and young people, study visits to other partner areas, social events such as painting and photography contests as well as the project website.

CITIZEN PARTICIPATION IT IS ALL ABOUT TELLING THE TRUTH TIMING AUTHENTICITY FUN LONGEVITY RELEVANCE!
