dizajn MasterthesIs Mailin Lemke WS 2012/2013 Advisor: Prof. Bernd Benninghoff [DIZAJN] is a fictional shop of the University of Applied Sciences Mainz where projects of students get presented to the publicity. The different projects of the students of the three different disciplines communication design, media design and interior design get projected on baldachins. Surprise is the biggest advantage that student projects have compared to commercial work because they can still work really free, therefore surprise was chosen to be the overlapping design topic for the whole exhibition. Surprise con be seen in different forms in the whole room and is supposed to enhance the interaction.
PrOCEDUrE Submission of work Work gets Presented In the Shop VIsItor ColleCts his Favourite ProjeCts The student can upload his/her work on the homepage of [DIZAJN]. The works get reviewed by a jury to secure a high quality standard. The visitor can collect projects while being in the shop. He can then enter a code, that he gets from [DIZAJN], to see the collected projects on the homepage. The different projects get projected on baldachin.
PrOCEDUrE The interaction in [DIZAJN] gets achieved by different plates. Each plate has a different size and decor and names 5 different attributes on its front. Each seat shows two circles of different size and a fork. The plates can get plugged into the table and then the visitor can rotate the plate to switch through the different projects.
PrOCEDUrE Inside of the cake packaging is the cake, a fork and a text on the bottom that explains how the visitor can save projects to see them later on the website. When the vistor puts the fork on the corresponding place on the table, he can save a project. The mug becomes the speaker when the visitor puts it on the black small circle on the table.
CoNNECTIon to town UNIVERSITY OF MAINZ ToWN MAINZ DESIgN FaIr The shop DIZAJN is located in the inner city of Mainz. Students can catch up here and talk about their work and people who randomly pass by can go into the exhibition and get some information about the university. They can see what the students do and for what the university stands for. The shop can as well get mobile and present the projects of the university on a design fair. Here are more design interested people than in the Mainzer city.
SubmIt your work The students hand in their projects on the homepage of DIZAJN where the work gets reviewed by a jury that consists of students and professor to secure a high standard of the projects that get presented.
ForeIgn worlds The projects get projected on different baldachins. The baldachins hang from the ceiling over tables. The visitor can choose where he wants to sit to start the interaction. The baldachins hang so low that the visitor has to bend his head to get underneath it. The entrance into this foreign world is physically noticeable.
SpIn, SpIn Plate On the tables lie different plates that the visitor needs to see the different projects. The plates are for the interaction. Each plate has a different form and names five different attributes. The visitor can just choose the next attribute that shows a project but he can t choose the kind of project e.g. a graphic project or an interior concept.
LuCent BaldaChIn Each plate has a thorn on its back. With this thorn the plate can get plugged into a hole in the table. The visitor can than turn the plate and by doing so the visitor switches through the projects. On the back of the plate are RFIDs that get read by a RFID reader.
BlaCk or WhIte The visitor can as well buy something to eat in the shop. He can choose between a black and a white cake but he doesn t know how the cake will taste like. The factor surprise is the main idea behind the packaging.
Eat and save Inside the cake packing lays the cake, a fork and on the bottom is an explanation that describes that the purpose of the fork. Its purpose is not just to eat with it the cake. It is as well a device with which the visitor can save projects he likes. To do so he has to put the fork on the corresponding black fork that is shown on the table. Underneath that fork is a second RFID reader that reads the RFID tag that is on the fork. On the fork is a personallised code that allows the visitor to see the saved projects on the [DIZAJN] website.
Cup as your speaker The coffee mug is made out of paper and shows a quote of a student or a professor of the university. The quote can just be read when the coffeemug is empty because otherwise the coffe hides the words. The mug has a second function: When the visitor puts it on the black small circle on the table the mug becomes a speaker and starts to enhance the sound.
And It Goes on The Logo and the stationary is also following the idea of surprise. The font for the logo is the DIAMOND and has a lot of different characters. The logo is embossed on the business card and the letterhead.
