LANDSCAPE and CULTURAL FRONTIERS?: the cultural evolution of Landscapes MAR-E1021: Management and Conservation of Cultural Landscape (9-12 credits) MAR-E1018: Landscape Architecture_course with varying content_cultural Landscapes (3 credits) MAR-C1009: Management and Conservation of Landscapes (3 credits) 9-12 credits / period III, IV, V (spring term 2017); Teachers: Juanjo Galan The starting point: Cultural might not be a label but a dimension of the Landscape: The Studio wants to explore the concept of Cultural Landscapes, not as a particular type of designated and delimited landscape, but as the cultural dimension of any landscape. The concept of Cultural landscape is therefore perceived as the evolving expression of the interaction of the human being with the environment with the traces, physical patterns, social structures, productive systems and cultural meanings that the individuals or the collectives create as a consequence of their activity and presence in any given territory The Study Area: The cultural dimension of the landscape is at the same time persisting and changeable, it is deep and shallow; it deals with the static character of the rocks and soils and with the voluble political and economic fluctuations. It is old like the languages and myths, and it is new like the fashions and trends. It responds to climate and natural resources, and it adapts to the technological or socio-demographic changes. Can two close places with similar natural conditions and similar human backgrounds evolve into different landscapes?, How does it happen?, What remains and what stays? In this studio, we want to understand the cultural dimension of the landscape by studying the differences and similarities of places and regions that shared the same nature and cultural background but that took at some point diverging paths We want to approach the landscape as a human construct in which human decisions determine its evolution. Following this idea, the Study Area should be located in two places with similar natural and cultural substrata but at the same time, with different recent stories, with distinct socio-demographic and economic trajectories, with contrasting planning systems We are looking for two places where the human action might have made different what used to be similar We want to work in a place of maximum divergence to highlight the logics behind the cultural transformation of the landscape That is why we will work in the frontier between Finland and Russia Welcome to Cultural Frontiers: the cultural evolution of Landscapes Learning outcomes: On completing the course students are familiar with the means and potential of the management and conservation of the cultural landscape. They understand the natural and cultural heritage of the cultural landscape and are able to assess them critically and justify their renovation and preservation. Students are able to prepare reports, analyses and plans for the sustainable use and management of the cultural landscape. Contents: On the course students become familiar with the development, pressures for change and future outlooks of the cultural landscape and historical-cultural environments. They become familiar with the means for the protection of the cultural landscape through the planning of land use, economic
activities and green areas, as well as the agents and cost factors in the maintenance of the landscape. In the assignments students address the different values of the cultural landscape, their connection in the landscape and biotopes, as well as the means of preservation and methods of management. Specific objectives for the Studio: After completing the course students are expected to be able to: - Develop a consistent and independent opinion on the concept of Cultural Landscapes - Integrate in a holistic way the human factors affecting the management and transformation of the landscape. - Understand and use both in the planning and design processes the Cultural dimension of the Landscape at the regional level. - Analyze and use proactively in their planning and design processes: The formal or spatial human elements, systems or patterns in the landscape (constructions, architecture, urban structures, infrastructures, etc.) The productive activities, economic drivers, land-use and spatial planning systems and governance-participatory frameworks behind the management and transformation of the landscape. The socio-cultural meanings of the landscape and the social structures that permit the management and transformation of the landscape. The Cultural heritage as a factor providing significant cultural value - Asses critically and justify the degrees of transformation or preservation of the cultural values of the landscape and the methods to guarantee the feasible implementation of their decisions. - Understand the means and potential of the management and conservation of specially designated cultural landscapes and be capable of preparing reports, analyses and plans for the sustainable use and management of those designated cultural landscapes (including planning of land use, economic activities and open areas, as well as the agents and cost factors in the maintenance of the landscape). - Communicate graphically the tangible and intangible cultural dimension of the landscape Methodology: The studio would be organized in 3 main parts and would integrate lectures, seminars, a fieldtrip and the development of a set of Plans and Pilots for the management of the Cultural values of the landscape and for a set of selected sites in the surroundings of the frontier between Finland and Russia: - Part1: Exploration of the Cultural Dimension of the Landscape (lectures, reading seminars, study of references) - Part2: A comparative and cultural analysis of two diverging landscapes: preexisting conditions and drivers behind the change (team work including a field trip of 5 days and meetings with local people and administrations). - Part3: Conclusions, Plans and Pilots: The cultural factor in the transformation of the landscape + Definition of guidelines and recommendations for the transformation/protection of Cultural values in the landscape + Development of a Management Plan for a designated Cultural Landscape (team work) - The team work will be organized according to topics and/or specific subareas within the Study area.
