Working Groups on Sediments Ecological Problems in PA: sharing experiences (I. Liska) - illustrate the negative impacts on your habitats, species, infrastructure - present your graph, photo etc. which you brought with you Possible solutions (in your section)? (B. Tóth) - list actions/projects in your section (ideas, planned, in constrction, visions) - don t forget bad examples which doesn t/didn t work Towards Joint Demands (G. Frank) - who do we want to adress? - simple but important messages in daily (local) sediment management - how can we contribute on Danube-wide scale

WILDisLAND

WILDisLAND A first draft Concept for a DANUBEPARKS Campaign for Wilderness at Danube Islands and towards a Danube Wild Island Habitat Corridor Georg Frank (DANUBEPARKS Project Manager) & Persina Nature Park

WILDisLAND Gravel and sand islands are key habitats in the Danube ecosystem! These sites must not be negatively impacted by further river regulation and should consequently be included in Danube Protected Areas. building up a network of protected islands is seen as a relevant contribution.

WILDisLAND Habitat Corridor: Prioritization of Danube Islands as stepping stones with the aim of promoting the connectivity of Protected Areas Initiation and protection of natural processes in combination with designation of wilderness areas are crucial for conservation of floodplain forests along the Danube.

WILDisLAND Regenpfeifer eier This project aims to restore riverbanks to their former natural state relying on existing Poplus nigra trees to supply seed for recolonisation. (DANUBEPARKS STEP 2.0 TFM Sombor 12th Dec. 2012)

Why shall WE have a focus on islands? Key habitats for (highly threatened) species There is the need for conservation!! All Danube Protected Areas preserve islands We have the experience in their protection! Stepping stones to develop Danube wide habitat corridors We have the responsibility to work towards habitat corridors!!

What is the added value of a Danube Wild Island Corridor? Clear statement (for river dynamics, for Danube habitat corridors etc.) Coherent and best management (=wilderness) Increase habitat quality long-term (NATURA 2000 is not enough) Impulse for enlargement of Protected Areas Impulse for (re)zoning of Protected Areas Best-practice for Danube-wide cross-secoral co-operation (e.g. EUSDR PA 6 (Biodiv.) & PA1 (Navigation))

Is it realistic? (Why to start with Danube islands?) Common management vision easy to define Public land Only few landowners/users/managers Commercial interest relatively low Best moment for Danube-wide cross-secoral co-operation Interest and/or willingness by landusers to cooperate on this concept can be expected

Methodology STEP 1: Defining Criterias STEP 2: Mapping STEP 3: Results STEP 4: Realization STEP 5: Implementation

STEP 1: Criterias defined all Danube islands with potential for Wilderness today or in the near future no infrastructure no agricultural land (meadows, fields etc.) no largerer forest plantations

STEP 4: long-term Implementation Changing number of islands/area regulare update needed Concept/follow-up project to add more islands Permanent dialogue panparks & DANUBEPARKS Controlling and reporting by each Protected Area, being responsible for longer sections...

WILDisLAND your feedback, your inputs.

WILDisLAND your feedback, your inputs.

Working Groups on WILDisLAND Feedback on mapping of islands (G. Frank) - qualtity of mapping - missing important islands - preparing for careful check by each PP as homework: what is needed? Added Values of Wild Island Corridor (T. Parrag) - How could your Protected Area/your flora and fauna can have an added value? - How does this concept fit to your management plans? Landownser and Cooperation Necessities (S. Bozhinova) - Which institutions are the owners/managers of the islands in your section? - Is there an existing cooperation with these institutions? - How to reach them best? (e.g. NEWADA duo, EUSDR, nationally)
