Cleaning the birth pool This manual conforms to the guidelines issued by Statens Serum Institut (SSI) under the Danish Ministry of Health, for cleaning of heated water pools for obstetric use. The manual includes tips for reducing chlorine odour. After use, raise the birth pool to a suitable 1 working height using the Up/Down buttons on the supply unit's control panel. 1 Open the pool's drainage system by pressing 2 the Water Outlet button 1 on the supply unit. When the light in the button is OFF, the drainage system valve is open and water can drain out of the pool. Rinse the pool thoroughly using the hand 3 shower head 2 on the supply unit. 2 IMPORTANT The temperature of the cleaning water must not exceed 55-60 C. 4 Remove and clean the pool's drain plug. It can be cleaned in an instrument washer or autoclaved. 16
Clean the drain using a cleaning brush and 5 then rinse with clean running water using the hand shower head. Clean the pool using a soft cloth and a 6 neutral cleaning agent. Next, rinse the pool thoroughly. The pool is 7 now clean and ready to be disinfected. IMPORTANT Never use a scouring agent or strongly alkaline cleaning agent. Never use razor blades or other sharp objects for cleaning. 17
Disinfection of drain pipe and pool interior using Actichlor Plus! CAUTION Always read the material safety data sheet (MSDS) and the accompanying instructions for the cleaning or disinfecting agent, and observe the instructions for safe use, dissolving, rinsing, drying, handling and storage of the agent. 1 Place 1 Actichlor Plus tablet in 1 litre of 1 clean, tepid water (1,000 PPM). Leave the tablet to dissolve in the water (takes approx. 5 minutes). You may wish to make up the solution in a capped disposable bottle to reduce the chlorine odour. NOTE: do not mix Actichlor Plus with other cleaning agents. Close the pool's drainage system. Press the 2 Water Outlet button 1 on the supply unit and wait until the button lights up. When you see the light, the drainage system valve is closed. Pour the Actichlor solution into the drain 3 until the drain pipe is visibly full. Fill a plastic bag with water and place it over the drain hole so as to seal it and prevent chlorine odour escaping. The Actichlor solution must be left to work in the drain for 30 minutes to eliminate C. difficile bacteria. See also the instructions on the Actichlor packaging. Raise the pool to the correct working 4 height, disperse the Actichlor solution using a soft cloth over all the internal surfaces of the pool and leave the liquid to dry. Remove the bag at the bottom of the pool 5 and open the pool's drain by pressing the button 1. Use the hand shower head to rinse the pool thoroughly. Let the water drain out through the pool's drainage system and through the outlet hose and supply unit. 18
Full cleaning of the drainage system We recommend cleaning the entire drainage system every 4 weeks.! Check that the pool's drainage system is 2 open. Press the Water Outlet button 1 on the supply unit. If the button is NOT lit, this indicates that the drain pipe is open and the water can drain out. Disconnect the pool's outlet hose. The hose 3 disconnects easily by hand. The outlet hose must be cleaned in an instrument washer (for information on the hose, see below). If the pool was last used with a disposable hose, dispose of this used hose and connect a fresh one. Screw the drain plug onto the pool's drain 4 pipe. 5 Pour Actichlor solution into the drain pipe until the drain is visibly full. Fill a plastic bag with water and place it over the drain hole so as to seal it and prevent chlorine odour escaping. The Actichlor solution must be left to work in the drain for 30 minutes to eliminate C. difficile bacteria. See also the instructions on the Actichlor packaging. 19
Place a basin under the plugged drain pipe. 6 The basin volume must be at least 1 litre. Place the basin in a bag so as to be able to seal the bag around the basin when you come to remove it. This prevents spills and reduces chlorine odour when removing the basin. Now remove the drain plug and let the 7 water drain into the basin (approx. 600 ml). Draw the bag up around the basin and knot the bag. Remove the basin. Reconnect the outlet hose between the pool 8 and the supply unit. Remove the water-filled bag from the pool. 9 10 Use the hand shower head to rinse the pool's drain thoroughly. Let the water drain out through the pool's drain pipe and through the outlet hose and supply unit. 20
