L.E.D. Lighting 101 L.E.D. stands for Light-Emitting Diode. An L.E.D. is an electronic semiconductor that effi ciently emits light. Compared to standard or halogen bulbs, L.E.D. lights are: Smaller in size Consume less energy Proven to be more durable and reliable Last longer Contain no harmful toxins Do not emit dangerous UV rays Simply brighter! L.E.D. lamp life can easily achieve 80,000+ hours of usage while still maintaining 70% of the original light output. L.E.D. lights only use 15% of the energy a standard halogen light used and proved up to 85% more light output. A typical L.E.D. lighting system uses about as much electricity as a home computer. More than 90% of all new landscape lighting installations are L.E.D. systems. Warranty. Landscape Lighting Guidelines Less is more... Let the dark spaces add contrast to your lighting design. Glaring and overly bright illumination can be uncomfortable and detract from the enjoyment of outdoor living spaces. Protect the stars and dark skies with judicious use of up lighting. Over-illumination, or the excessive use of light, is wasteful and can have negative effects on the local environment. Use landscape lighting to help create safer and more secure outdoor living spaces. Pay special attention to pathways, steps, pools, water features, and tripping hazards. Make outdoor tasks easier with target lighting around bar islands, grills, and outdoor eating areas. Create depth by selectively illuminating items and areas both near and far from the viewer. Integrating depth into the lighting design creates a rich three-dimensional visual experience. Transformer Requirements Glossary of Terms The VA (volts x amps) rating on Kichler Landscape products represents the value used when calculating the transformer load requirements. To calculate the transformer size required, multiply the VA rating by the quantity of each fi xture, then add the total. Example: # of Fixtures VA Value Transformer Load 4 x 1.3 VA = 5.2 VA 6 x 5.8 VA = 34.8 VA 6 x 10.0 VA = 60.0 VA Total = 100 VA This L.E.D. system requires at least a 100 Watt transformer. Color Temperature 2700K Color 3000K Color Beam Spread The spread of light from a light source. High degree beam spreads create wide or Flood lighting. Low degree beam spreads create narrow or Spot lighting. Color Temperature The appearance of light, in terms of warmth or coolness. High temperature corresponds to cooler, more white light. Low temperature corresponds to warmer, more yellow light. Incandescent The traditional type of light bulb that produces light through electricity. It is not a very effi cient source of illumination. L.E.D. (Light-Emitting Diode) A semiconductor diode, similar to a computer chip, that emits light when conducting an electrical current. More effi cient than traditional incandescent lighting. Lumen The measure of the perceived power of light. Higher Lumen outputs correspond to brighter light sources. Volt A measurement of the pressure of electricity going through a wire. Landscape lighting typically functions on 12 volts, compared to 120 volts for interior lighting. Watt A unit of electrical power. Lamps are rated in watts to indicate the rate at which they consume energy.
