General Show Rules 1. Fort Lauderdale Garden Club, Inc. and Pompano Beach Garden Club will present A Standard Flower Show at the John Knox Village, 651 S.W. 6th Street Pompano Beach, FL 33060. The show is open by invitation Thursday evening March 12, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and open to the public free of admission on Friday and Saturday, March 13 & 14, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This show shall conform to standards established by National Garden Clubs, Inc. for which the 2007 revised edition of the Handbook for Flower Shows is the authority. 2. All entries shall be judged by the NGC Standard System of Awarding and ribbons shall be offered per class or subclass as follows: a. One First Place (Blue) Ribbon for an exhibit scoring 90 points or above; b. One Second Place (Red) Ribbon for an exhibit scoring 85 points or above; c. One Third Place (Yellow) Ribbon for an exhibit scoring 80 points or above; d. One or more Honorable Mention (White) Ribbons for exhibits scoring 75 points or above. 3. Competition in the Horticulture Division is open to members of Fort Lauderdale Garden Club, Inc., the Pompano Beach Garden Club and by invitation. Competition in the Design Division is open to all Florida Federation of Garden Club, Inc. members in District XI. 6. Fort Lauderdale Garden Club, Inc. and Pompano Beach Garden Club members must exhibit using their name as printed in the yearbook. Any exhibitor who is a member of more than one garden club or garden circle must choose a primary garden club or garden circle and may exhibit only as a member of that garden club or garden circle. 7. The Classification Committees shall enforce all exhibition rules. 8. The decision of the judges will be final. Any award may be withheld if the exhibit does not meet the specific requirements. 3. The SCHEDULE IS THE LAW OF THE SHOW. Please read the schedule carefully. All exhibits throughout the show must be approved by the classification chairmen. 10. The following are not permitted anywhere in flower shows: artificial plant material, natural birds nests, stuffed birds, butterflies and other insects, fish, birds, and animals. 11. The show area will be cleared for judging at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 12, 2009. Only required personnel may be present during judging. 12. All exhibits must be in place for the duration of the show and must be removed between 4 PM and 6 PM on Saturday, March 14th, 2009 13. Although care will be taken, the John Knox Village, FLGC or PBGC Club cannot be responsible for loss or damage. Page 20 Page 9
Horticulture Division Rules 1. All exhibits entered in the Horticulture Division must be fresh and have been grown by the exhibitor. 2. Container-grown plants must have been in the possession of the exhibitor for a minimum of 90 days just prior to the date of the show (with the exception of multiple and combination plantings which must have been grown together and in the exhibitor s possession for no fewer than six weeks.) 3. Cut annuals and biennials must have been in the exhibitor s possession from seeds, cuttings or immature plants, and perennials from planting of bulb, tuber, corm, etc. or at least 90 days.( December 12, 2008). 4. Exhibitors are limited to a total of five container grown plants, including those on plaques and hanging baskets. A Collection shall be counted as one entry. Exhibitors may also enter as many as three cut specimens and one exhibit in the Arboreal Class. 5. Exhibitors may make more than one entry per class provided each entry is a different species, variety, cultivar, type or color. 11. The national flag of the United States of America must be displayed in a respectful manner and may not be incorporated into any design. 12. The following are permitted in all design classes: Accessory objects and featured objects; fresh plant material may be clipped, stripped, bent or otherwise manipulated; contrived flowers and other forms made from real plant materials, fresh or dried; cut fruit or vegetables sealed to discourage insects, odors and discoloration; non-perishable foods, feathers; antlers; coral, shells, horns, starfish; sea fans, sponges; manufactured or crafted simulations of birds or other animals. 13. Entries may be placed Wednesday, March 11, between 12:00 pm to 5:00 p.m.; Thursday, March 12, 2009 between 9:00 am. to 11:00 a.m. 14. Entries must be removed between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009. 6. Containers are limited in size to a maximum of 14 in diameter for potted plants and 12 in diameter for hanging baskets. All containers must be clean.. 7. Double-potting is permitted as long as the primary pot isn t showing. 8. Containers for cut specimens shall be provided by the show committee. 9. Design Division Rules 1. Reservations must be made with the Consultant of each section no later than February 20, 2009. 2. Entries must be the work of one person. An exhibitor must provide a substitute if she/he is unable to fulfill her/his assignment. 3. An exhibitor may enter as many classes as desired but may enter only one exhibit per class. 4. Some plant material (fresh or dried) must be used in every exhibit. Plant material used in designs need not have been grown by the exhibitor. 5. Plant material that has been treated to alter its exterior appearance may be used only in its dried state. 6. No artificial flowers, foliage, fruits or vegetables are permitted. 7. Landscapes or scenes are not permitted. 8. Each exhibitor must provide a white unlined 3 x 5 card with botanical names of plant material used in the design. The exhibitor may provide a separate card with a brief explanation of her/his interpretation of the class theme. 9. Judges are requested to comment on all entries except Blue Ribbon winners. All entries winning a blue ribbon shall be point-scored and those scoring above 95 points shall be designated for consideration of a Top NGC Exhibitor Award. All entries awarded Fort Lauderdale Garden Club, Inc. Silver Awards must be scored 90 points or above. 10. Each Consultant shall be responsible for registering entries with the Design Entries Chairman. 10. Entry cards for container-grown plants shall be prepared in advance by the show committee. Entry cards for cut specimens will be provided by the show committee and shall be prepared by the exhibitor at time of entry. 11. All Horticultural Exhibits must be properly identified with complete botanical nomenclature which includes genus and species, and if possible, should include cultivar or variety. Please consult a horticulture reference, if necessary, for correct identification and spelling. Suggested horticultural references include Exotica and Tropica by Dr. Alfred Byrd Graf and Hortus III: Concise Dictionary of Plants Cultivated in the United States & Canada rewritten by the staff of the L.H. Bailey Hororium at Cornell University. 12. Container grown plants shall be entered on Wednesday March 11, 2009, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p. m. NO EXCEPTIONS PLEASE. 13. Cut specimens may be entered with container grown plants or on Thursday, March 12, 2009, between 9:00 am. and 11:00 a.m. 14. All horticulture exhibits must be removed between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2009. 15. The Classification Committee may divide any Section or Class by genus, species, hybrid or variety, and may delete any Section, Class or Subclass without entries prior to judging and may further subdivide at their discretion upon the advice of any judging panel. 16. Plants may not have been altered by the application of oil, commercial shine products that may artificially change the natural color or texture. 17.
