PRESENTATION OF THR REE FINAL SCENARIO Work of students of Grenoble Tuesday, March 23rd 2009
PREAMBLE Following the discussion that we had with Bratislava s students and between us we decided to modify the scenarios that we discussed during the video-conference with Bratislava. We realized that some of the scenarios had similarities, so we decidedd to combine some of them. Then now we only have 3 scenarios for the scientific peninsula instead of 6. But all the work that we have already done can be found in these 3 scenarios that we chose. We created one group of town planner students for each scenario and we will develop in this 3 scenario one major idea that gives sense to the scenario: - the Rubik s cube city (combine with the idea t he scientific peninsula :the headlight ht of Grenoble ) ; treated by Sophie, Clémentine and Charline. - Science as an urban dynamic (by developing idea of local journey and thematic park as for example le parc de la villette in Paris) ; treated by Pauline, Hi and Marine. - The city without cars by developing the idea of an ecological district including ecological housing, ecological transport, etc ; treated by Geoffrey, Stefan and Kévin These scenarios will integrate t all the questions about link/connexion i between the peninsula site and the surrounded urban areas by dealing with two different scales: city area and metropolitan area. We are now working about application of our ideas on the site and about the question of housing in the aim to prepare some possible questions from architec ct students from other universities about housing. We are waiting for any reactions from Oikodomos students or teachers and we will be very glad to answer to your questions. Cordially, town planner students from Grenoble.
SCENARIO 1 THE RUBIK RUBIK S S CUBE CITY
CONCEPT OF THE RUBIK S CITY: Diversity in all the territory Chrono-urbanism Evolution in several te emporal phases (possibility of mutability on the short/medium/long term) (cf. map 1) System of relevant to pics for the territory (cf. next schema)
SYSTEM OF RELEVANT TOPICS SCIENCE ENVIRONMENT CULTURE HOUSING
MUTABLE AREAS
STRATEGY FOR THE RUBIK S CITY A work of urban development is focus on the axis: street of Martyrs, but, in particular on their crossroads to open deeply in the urban tissue. (cf. map 2) There are crossroads which give rhythm to the view in the axis, and they announce the stake of the site. This announcement can be to illustrate by a headlight architecture. t Three of them announce three mutable areas where it is able to work now. (cf. map3) Only areas propose a program and urban atmosphere. Your mission, i is to present aarchitecture t adequate at this urban atmosphere.
STRUCTURAL ROAD NETWORK
1- Urban centrality 2- Waterfront reconquest 3- Scientific gate 3 2 1 THREE STAKES AREAS
THE FIRST AREA: A DOOR OF PENINSULA The goal in this area is to create the door of the peninsula which h will be proposedifferent topics. (Science, ce, culture, environment, e housing) This door will take the form of a square dense. It will propo ose facilities for every days, and at the same time, it will be the scene for cultural events.
PLACE: DOORS OF THE PENINSULA 1 2 References for this place: 1- Mitterrand (Lille) 2- Park Guell (Barcelona) de Gaudi. In the outskirts of the place, housing is mixed with services.
TYPICAL URBAN ATMOSPHERE FOR THIS PLACE
SCENARIO 2 SCIENCE MIC AS AN URBAN DYNAM
The question is to know how make a scientific city? How can we integrate a scientific aspect into the city? How make it up attractive? First we have to see and conceive the territory into a global vision and promotes it qualities and potential. Actually the peninsula had a monofunctional issue and work organize is space like a enclave.
We have to organize into a hierarchy to permit to give it a dynamic. We have to promote the centralities which exist, and make strong links between each other. This new meshing will permits to organ nize new ways and network, like tramway (prolongation), the opening of CEA's area and SNCF's area. This first meshing is intern links, which have to lean on other polarities. This others centers will have functions (housing, commerce...) and character different (hobby, culture...) and specialties (ecologic, technologist, technical). They will serve like relay which could permit the born of a scientific archipelago. This view permits to conceive the peninsula into two differents aspect, spatial with the land settlement and into the programation to. (research about architecture, innovation like dometique). An other point and not the least we don't want to close this territory. We have to make links, and we can use the scientific aspect to valorize this space and open it and give a scientific aspect to all the territory of Grenoble. Promote the links with the other part and other scientific aspects of all the territory and the agglomeratio n. This part is the external meshing which lean on the train station like a new entry toward the town-center. te
SCENARIO 3 THE CITY WITHOUT CARS C
INTRODUCTION The size, the geographic situation and the population of the peninsula site are favourable for suppression of car traffic and insertion of ecological transport systems and vehicles inside the area. Proximity of northern highway project, tramline B and train station are some others arguments in favour of this scena ario peninsula without cars. Installation of ecological transport shall be in link with the development of ecological housing (renewable energy, green roofs and walls, reuse of rain water, etc ) and with an organisation of services on the site favourable to an ecological lifestyle without cars, for population who work and live there. All these facilities should permit ecological district. to the peninsula to become an
ARGUMENTS IN FAVOR OF PENINSULA WITHOUT CARS Peninsula has a big problem of free spaces for construction of new buildings. Peninsula without cars is the solution to get free spaces because current car parks will be use for the construction of buildings, and there are many car parks on the peninsula ; Peninsula is surrounded by waterfronts. We could create an area based on nature and leisure aspect. The suppression of car traffic will support this aspect (safer for children, less noise, interesting to walk in a city area without cars, etc ) Promote and support the image of the peninsula for innovation and promotion of sustainable development ; Create a transport interchange pole for the peninsula but also for the city centre. This pole in connexion with the northern highway and the tramline B will permit a fast access to the city centre and the train station ;
PENINSULA, a space in favor of a without cars lifely Size of the site, permit to cross it very quickly with clean transport (bike, walking) ; Easy control of car access (3 bridges and few streets in the south of the peninsula) Proximity of the train and bus station, permit to inhabitants of the peninsula to move easily in the surrounded region and in other cities (Isère department, Lyon, Chambéry, etc ) ; Tramline B, which will cross the peninsula and will connect it directly with the city centre, the university site in St Martin d Hères and indirectly with the rest of the metropolitan area by the bus and tramline network of Grenoble ; Northern highway, witch will receive the car traffic of the peninsula and witch will give a direct access to the peninsula with the relay car park ; Presence of students on the site, who in majority don t have any car and who are more favourable for an ecological lifestyle than other kind of population.
OUR STRATEGY Create an attractive space based on the as pect «sustainable» and «unique» of the peninsula without cars. The peninsula will be the symbol of science, innovation, and sustainable development. A good quality of urban life will give value to this site. The site will be dedicated to research, leisure, stroll ; Promote the creation of an ecological district (high environmental quality housing, ecological transport, etc ) Create functional diversity (housing, emplo oyment, services) and proximity to ensure sustainable development, topermitautonomy of the area and support a without car lifestyle. Inhabitants of the peninsula should beabletodoshopping,gotosport,gotowork, etc without cars. Encourage population who work on the peninsula to live there ; Develop public transport and ecological l transport ; Open up the peninsula by improving the link St Martin Le Vinoux, St Egrève, etc ) ; with the surrounded urban areas (city centre, Report the city centre s car traffic on the northern highway and on motorways by encouraging motorists to use relay car parks ;
THE WAYS TO ACT THAT WE IDENTIFIED TO PUT IN PLACE OUR STRATEGY : Use car park for construction of housing and public spaces ; Build high environmental quality housing adapted to different kind of population: renewable energy, positive energy building, green wall and roof to reduce high temperature in summer in the city, limitation of ground sealing, recycling rainwater system, recycling waste system, etc ; Put in place a signalisation/system to limit the acc ess to the peninsula ; Build relay car parks : two in connexion with the tramline B, included one next to the motorway interchange (A48) in St Martin-le-Vinoux and one next to the motorway interchange of rue des martyres (northern highway). And two in connexion with the ecological shuttle, included one next to the motorway interchange (A480) in Fontaine, and one next to Europole in the south of the peninsula ; Extend tramline B until St Egrève ; Create a system of ecological shuttle witch will connect the relay car park in Europole and the relay car park on A480 and witch will cross insideid the CEA ; Develop bus lines coming from the rest of the metropolitan area (Sassenage, Fontaine, St Egrève, Seyssins, etc ) witch will serve the transport interchange pole of the peninsula ; Create a self service car system and a rental car s ystem ; Create a system of at home delivery manage by supermarkets of the peninsula or give to the population a mean to transport their shopping ; Create a system of transport interchange ticket (exemple: free tramway if using car park relay) ; Develop quality ways for bikes and pedestrians ; Create a free self service bike system ; Give value to river waterfronts and create a stroll way ; Give value to mountains landscapes by offering a good view to the population ; Create parks and connect them with waterfronts ;
