Alarm system Siren tests: first Wednesday in February Every year, on the first Wednesday in February, a siren test takes place all over Switzerland to check that sirens are in working order. The test is for the general alarm sirens and also the water alarm (13h30 to 15h00). Inhabitants are informed in advance via the radio, television advertisements and press releases. It is not necessary to take any special protection measures. The Federal Office for the protection of the population which is in charge of this test thanks the population for their comprehension. Water alarm (burst dam) If the water alarm sounds, inhabitants should follow the communal «burst dam» plan. Information in the telephone directory and on teletext Any alarm signal that sounds at any other time means that inhabitants could be at risk. In these cases, everyone is advised to listen to the radio, and to follow instructions from the authorities and to inform their neighbours. The water alarm only sounds after the general alarm and signifies that inhabitants must immediately leave the dangerous area.
