Monday Thursday Tuesday Friday Wednesday COLLECTION DAY - STEP 2 Your garbage bin (red lid) is collected every week. Bins out by 6am. Recycling bin week (yellow lid). Bins out by 6am. ON CALL HARD RUBBISH SERVICE If you have hard waste to dispose of including electronic waste, please use Council s on call hard waste service. Households are entitled to one free on call collection per financial year. To make a booking call Council s Waste Hotline on 8295 5077. An additional booking can be made for $50 ($25 for pensioners). For more information about the service and acceptable items, see the Hard Rubbish page at holdfast.sa.gov.au DON T DUMP YOUR WASTE, KEEP YOUR CITY BEAUTIFUL Please note that it is an offence to place items on Council land, footpath or reserve without prior permission. These actions may attract a fine of $1000. To report dumped rubbish for investigation call 8229 9999 SECTION 1. USING YOUR CALENDAR / HARD RUBBISH SERVICE

BIN COLLECTIONS Where practical keep a minimum distance of 30cm between bins, and 1 metre between bins and parked cars, street trees, stobie poles and letter boxes 1 METRE 30 CM 1 METRE CORRECT Bins 30cm apart with lids closed. TO ENSURE YOUR BINS ARE EMPTIED ON YOUR SCHEDULED COLLECTION DAY, YOU NEED TO: Put the bins out by 6am on the day of pick up and bring them back in within 24 hours of collection. Face each bin towards the road wheels towards the house Keep a minimum of 30cm clear around each bin Place the right material in the right bin (see Sections 3-5 for more information) Be sure your waste is not packed too tightly (keep your bin s weight under 50kg) Don t overfill your bin and make sure the lid can close WRONG Bins too close and overfull. PLEASE CONTACT SOLO RESOURCE RECOVERY ON 8295 5077 FOR: Collection enquiries including missed collections Damage to bins New bins when you move into a new property (garbage, recycling and organics) If the property is being demolished contact Council on 8229 9999 to arrange for the bins to be removed. Once the new dwelling is occupied contact Solo Resource Recovery on 8295 5077 to arrange delivery of new bins. MISSING BIN OR HAD YOUR BIN STOLEN? Glass bottles and jars COLLECTED: FORTNIGHTLY ON THE SAME DAY AS YOUR GARBAGE BIN (ALTERNATE WEEK TO YOUR GREEN ORGANICS) Tins, cans and aerosols NO OR...SOFT PLASTICS, NAPPIES, LIGHT BULBS, GREEN OR FOOD WASTE, GARDEN TOOLS GENERAL WASTE Paper and Cardboard Cartons DO NOT PUT YOUR RECYCLING IN PLASTIC BAGS DO NOT MIX RECYCLABLES EG PUTTING CANS IN BOXES Rigid plastic containers No soft plastics in the recycling bin. Most supermarkets and the Brighton Civic Centre have designated bins for soft plastic recycling. WHAT GOES IN THE RECYCLING BIN? Unbound paper and cardboard (newspapers, magazines, junk mail, envelopes, egg cartons, cardboard boxes flattened) Liquid paperboard cartons (eg juice and milk cartons empty and dry) Glass bottles and jars (empty, dry and lids off many lids can be collected in steel tin with lid on and placed in recycling bin) Aluminium and steel cans All rigid plastic containers (eg plastic drink bottles, detergent bottles, yoghurt, ice-cream, strawberry punnets, biscuit trays and margarine containers empty, dry and lids off) Clean aluminium trays and scrunched foil larger than the size of a clenched fist RECYCLING TIPS Hard, rigid plastic lids can now be collected in a plastic bottle (such as a milk bottle) and placed in the recycling bin with the lid off for recycling If you can scrunch a piece of plastic packaging (ie soft plastic) in your hand it cannot be recycled via the yellow bin. It can be put into your red lidded bin or collected with all your soft plastics and taken to local supermarkets or the Brighton Civic Centre and placed in the designated soft plastics recycling bin Remove all lids from jars, bottles and plastic containers before putting them in the bin Place all recyclables loose into the bin CONGRATULATIONS HOLDFAST BAY! Since the introduction of kitchen organic baskets and residential bin inspections in 2013, City of Holdfast Bay residents have increased the amount of waste being diverted away from landfill by 15 %, this making us one of the best performing council s in terms of landfill diversion in South Australia! We have processed an extra 4293 tonnes of organic waste, this equalling 204 million brussel sprouts or 572400 watermelons! A new Bin Inspection Blitz program will start early 2018, with households again having the opportunity to win a $100 Jetty Road Glenelg voucher for simply separating their waste correctly. GARBAGE BIN YOUR GARBAGE BIN IS THE SMALLER 140 LITRE BIN WITH THE RED LID. Nappies COLLECTED: WEEKLY Soft Plastics...GREEN OR FOOD ORGANICS, RECYCLING, ELECTRONIC WASTE, BATTERIES NOOR FLUORESCENT LIGHTING Ropes and hoses Broken Crockery and Glassware Polystyrene WHAT GOES IN THE GARBAGE BIN? This bin should only be used for general household waste that cannot be put in your yellow recycling or organics bin. This includes: Plastic bags, garbage bags and non-recyclable plastic and food packaging (eg chip packets) Nappies Kitty litter (wrapped and bagged) Small broken household items such as china and glassware (including incandescent light globes) Cling film and wine bladders Rags and clothing that cannot be passed on as hand-me downs or given to charity shops Foam meat trays, cups and packaging (expanded polystyrene) Ropes and hoses GOT TRICKY WASTE? Some items don t belong in any bin. If you have tricky waste such as household vehicle oil, batteries or florescent globes to dispose of go to holdfast.sa.gov.au to download Council s Tricky Waste brochure or call 8229 9999. YOU CAN REDUCE WHAT GOES INTO YOUR GARBAGE BIN BY FOLLOWING THE WASTE HIERARCHY: AVOID REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE DISPOSAL AVOID Refuse junk mail, share or borrow items and buy in bulk with minimal packaging. REDUCE Compost at home or use your kitchen organics basket. Use both sides of paper. Repair items instead of replacing. REUSE Reuse gift wrapping. Buy refillable containers where possible. Use reusable cups for take away beverages. RECYCLE Place all recyclable items in the recycling bin. Close the loop and buy recycled products to save natural resources. SECTION 5. GARBAGE BIN
