The VRFA Civil Service Commission held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 9 th at Auburn City Hall. The Finance Committee and Board of Governance held their monthly meetings on Thursday, October 11 th at Headquarters Station 31. This Week: DC Swearingen will attend the monthly meeting of the King County Fire Chiefs on Wednesday, October 17 th at the Seattle Joint Training Facility. The Board of Governance will hold a Special Meeting on Wednesday, October 17 th at Headquarters Station 31, for the purpose of receiving the proposed budgets. Staff will continue work on the development of the Civil Service examination to create the Deputy Fire Marshal eligibility list. Director Horaski will attend the Washington Cities Insurance Authority board meeting and training session on Friday, October 19 th in Tukwila.

911 Requests for Services / Customer Service: Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Monday, October 8 th at 9:32 a.m., firefighters assisted an elderly female fall victim that had sustained rib and leg injuries. The patient was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital by private ambulance. House Fire: (Pacific) On Tuesday, October 9 th at 11:06 a.m., firefighters responded to a fire in a residence. Firefighters arrived to find the home filled with smoke from a fire in a laundry room. Firefighters brought the fire under control and completed overhaul of the fire room while rescuing two family pets. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, October 10 th at 7:23 p.m., firefighters responded to a man having an irregular heart rhythm. The patient was evaluated, treated and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center (MAMC) by King County Medics. Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Thursday, October 11 th at 1:01 p.m., firefighters assisted a juvenile who suffered a seizure at Arthur Jacobsen school. Patient was treated and transported to Mary Bridge Hospital via private ambulance for further evaluations. Motor Vehicle Accident: (Pacific) On Friday, October 12 th at 3:32 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a possible car fire on Highway 167. Firefighters arrived to find 1 car fully engulfed in flames. The vehicle had been involved in an motor vehicle accident on Highway 167 prior to the fire. Three patients were evaluated by firefighters and transported to MAMC via VRFA Aid Unit and private ambulance. Aid Call: (South Auburn) On Saturday, October 13 th at 6:45 p.m., firefighters responded to an elderly male with leg pain. VRFA firefighters treated the patient at the scene and then transported him to MAMC. Aid Call: (North Auburn) On Sunday, October 14 th at 1:15 p.m., firefighters assisted a female with self-inflicted knife wound to forearm. Firefighters provided wound care and American Medical Response transported to MAMC. Training Division Activities: Training hours for the week: 183.0 Training hours for the year: 10,971

Deputy Fire Marshal Upton met with Kent View Elementary and Fire One regarding upgrades to existing fire alarm monitoring systems Fire Marshal office staff met with owner of Superior Fire regarding fire extinguisher requirements within the VRFA service area. Fire Marshal office staff met with City of Auburn staff and Ibex Construction regarding SuperMall phasing and exiting plans Fire Marshal Stottlemyre met with Local 1352 representative regarding upcoming Assistant Fire Marshal s test. Public Education Safety Zone activity newsletters were delivered to all public and private elementary schools in the VRFA service area. Fire Prevention Week messages were included. Along with Deputy Fire Marshal Stewart and a representative from Auburn Police, PIEO staff met with Auburn Theater 17 regarding their emergency evacuation plans. PIEO staff assisted with the monthly child car seat inspection at MultiCare Auburn Medical Center. The check is sponsored by Safe Kids of South King County. Public information duties were completed for a house fire in Pacific and an apartment fire in Algona. Station 34 hosted a station tour for 26 international students from the Komaba School.

Fire Investigation: During this reporting period the South King Fire Investigation Task Force (SKFITF) responded to four (4) calls for service in the VFRA response area. Two of the incidents involved clothes dryers. A buildup of dryer lint is the most probable cause for the fires. A fireworks device was set off inside a paper box causing substantial damage to the paper box. A cardboard box left on top of a range top stove is the listed cause of an Algona fire. Planning and Logistics P&L received three facility maintenance requests and eleven apparatus and small tool maintenance requests during the week. P&L staff met with DC Gerber regarding 2013 Goals and Objectives. P&L staff delivered the second new pumper to a vendor for final outfitting. The engine will be returned to the VRFA on Monday, October 15 th. P&L staff supervised the installation of new map frames at each facility.
