A delegation of SEIU members and staff from throughout California visited Sacramento on Thursday, Jan. 12, in an effort to move state lawmakers on the Court Industry's top legislative priority: a bill that would send trial court funding to courtrooms instead of bureaucracy. The delegation visited legislators' offices and then joined two Assembly members and three legislative staffers for a 90-minute "round table" discussion about the state of California's court system and the strategy to pass the bill. AB 1208 is crafted to deal with the misplaced priorities of the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), which oversees the state's trial courts. While courtrooms face cuts in hours, closures, layoffs and fewer services to the public, the AOC has been diverting and wasting funds allocated by the State Legislature on a half-billion-dollar database system that still doesn't work; a

and wasting funds allocated by the State Legislature on a half-billion-dollar database system that still doesn't work; a construction and maintenance program costing twice the industry standard; an expanding and highly paid bureaucracy, plus perks for top officials; and a PR program and lobbyists to keep it this way. Debbi Pearson, interim chair of SEIU 1021's Courts Industry, told the roundtable that where she works in Alameda County, budget cuts have forced all courts to close to the public at 2:30 pm. So many courtrooms have been closed that civil, family and traffic cases are only heard in two places in the county, resulting in long travel for the public, especially those who rely on public transit. Southern California Assembly member Charles Calderon -- author of AB 1208 -- said he voted for the Lockyer- Isenberg Trial Court Funding Act of 1997 that created the AOC. He said the Office now looks nothing like what they'd envisioned, and if legislators had known it would come to this, the bill would never have passed. "There is no accountability," Calderon said. "The legislature created this problem and now the legislature must solve it." Click here to register for a Convention Orientation session. On February 11-12, members attending the first-ever SEIU 1021 Convention will set a two-year course for the local to save public services, our jobs, wages, pensions and benefits. The Oakland Airport Hilton will be the backdrop as member delegates adopt a plan for our union to confront the attacks on our members and working families across northern California. All members may attend the two-day 1021 Convention and take part in more than a dozen workshops offered several times throughout the event. Workshops will cover topics like: Making corporations and the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share. Building bargaining and contract action team skills. Learning about winning practices from our campaigns. Becoming a more effective shop steward. Understanding the lessons of Wisconsin and the war on collective bargaining. Democratizing communications by putting the power of Local 1021's new multimedia website into the hands of each chapter and committee. The 1021 Convention also features prominent and inspiring speakers from across the nation. Saturday's keynote speaker is labor activist and author Bill Fletcher; Sunday will feature SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry. Informational orientation sessions for chapter delegates and non-delegate members are taking place this month at most Local 1021 offices.
