HOMES & INTERIORS / PROFILE MOOD BOARD Internationally acclaimed interior designer Robert Angell talks his inspirations and love of London STEPHANIE KING: Describe your design aesthetic in three words. ROBERT ANGELL: Timeless, unique, experiential. SK: What s been the proudest moment in your career to date? RA: It has to be setting up Robert Angell Design international in 2010. SK: When starting a new project, do you prefer to have free reign or work to a specific brief? RA: It is a mixture of both. I love working with my clients and together we challenge each other. However, at the end of the day, it is always about collaboration, working together to realise dreams. I do not believe in designing in the bubble of my own world. Yes, it is my role to lead on the creatives, but I like the journey of getting to the end result with everyone. Words Stephanie King SK:What building in London do you find particularly inspiring? RA: The dome of St Paul s to the steeple of the Shard, I love the London Skyline and the streets below. London has a soul that has built up over the centuries and I am proud to be working in the creative space where I can draw on the history on London and let it influence and inspire our 21st century designs. SK: Where s your favourite place in London to wander through? RA: I love the markets - from Alfie s Market to Broadway Market. I also love the shops on Bond Street. SK: Natural or man-made, what is your favourite landmark in the world? BRITISH design is innovative, EXCITING and we produce some of THE BEST DESIGNERS in THE WORLD RA: I would probably say Stonehenge, it s a beautifully proportioned, 3000 year old, globally recognised monument that is still being uncovered and discovered today. SK: After working on projects across the globe, how would you say British design differs from the rest of the world? RA: I think British design is a major leader on the global stage. British design is innovative, exciting and we produce some of the best designers in the world. The creative gene pool which Great Britain houses has a unique expertise and creativity which is sought after from across the world. SK: What s next for Robert Angell? Any exciting projects you can share with us? RA: We have a very busy and exciting 2016 ahead. We have a fabulous luxury retail store coming to Knightsbridge, an amazing London Hotel refurbishment with exciting new additions where we are collaborating with a world renowned British architectural practice. Also a Pan Asian restaurant which is set to capture global dining in a single space. There are a few other exciting projects we are working on which I cannot talk about just yet, but watch this space u robertangelldesigninternational.com SK:Does art play a role in your design process? RA: Absolutely, art is a very significant part of my work. It can be one piece of art, it s colours and shape, that inspires me for the whole interiors scheme. Or a narrative behind the particular piece that t has is just perfect for the interior you need a story behind it. 89 JANUARY 2016 B&C_Jan15_ROBERT ANGELLl.indd 89 08/12/2015 09:34
