1.0 Product Range 31E1000L 2031E1000L Dimmer, leading edge, 1000W, 240V, 50Hz, (Standard) Dimmer, leading edge, 1000W, 240V, 50Hz, (2000 Series) 2.0 Description The Clipsal Dimmer/Fan Controller, rated at 1000W (4A), gives full control of lighting and fans in domestic and commercial applications. The Dimmer complies with the Australian Standards (AS/NZS1044, AS/NZS4051) for EMC. An integral push-on/push-off switch is incorporated into the knob, which also controls the lamp brightness or fan speed. 3.0 Features 3.1 Soft Start Operation The dimmers incorporate a soft start feature providing a noticeably smooth lamp illumination at turn on. This feature also minimises lamp filament start up stress, which may increase lamp lifetime. 3.2 Unloaded LV Iron-Core Transformer Cut-Out The dimmers incorporate a safety cut-out, reducing the possibility of low voltage transformers overheating when a load (lamp) is not present (or has blown). Under these circumstances normal dimmer operation can be restored by switching the dimmer off before replacing the faulty lamp. 3.3 Overtemperature Compensation The dimmers incorporate thermal overload compensation, which automatically reduces lamp brightness should the dimmer be inadvertently overloaded. 4.0 Compatible Loads Incandescent or halogen 240V lamps, Low voltage lighting with iron-core transformers, Exhaust fans ie shaded pole induction motors, Ceiling fans ie split-phase induction motors, Any combination of above specified load type Not recommended for low voltage lighting with electronic transformers, unless used in conjunction with inductor unit Cat. No. 32EIND (limited to 2A max. load). Not suitable for fluorescent lighting. 5.0 Unit Operation The Dimmer/Controller is switched on or off by pressing the control/on/off knob. Brightness (or fan speed) is adjusted by rotating the control knob: clockwise increases brightness (or fan speed), anti-clock wise decreases brightness (or fan speed). Pressing the on/off switch does not alter the level setting. Copyright 2002 Gerard Industries Pty Ltd Page 3
6.0 Installation Instructions 6.1 Wiring Details Connect the 31E1000L in accordance with the wiring diagrams. (The wiring diagrams equally apply for fan applications) 6.2 Minimum Brightness Settings The minimum brightness level has been factory set to suit incandescent or ironcore based low voltage lamp applications. The minimum setting trimming potentiometer, which is accessible through the side of the case can be adjusted, if required, using the small plastic screwdriver supplied. When the is used to control fan loads it will typically be necessary to advance the minimum setting towards the fully clockwise position. This setting allows smooth control of fan rotational speed over the full control range of the control knob, and prevents the motor stalling at low speed settings. 6.3 Low Voltage Lighting Transformers Typically, dimmer load ratings must be derated in order to account for low voltage lighting transformer inefficiency. The 31E1000L dimmer does not require such derating, and is capable of driving the full 1000W of iron-core based low voltage lighting lamps (eg 20 x 50W lamps). 6.4 Multi-Gang Derating For applications, where 31E1000L Dimmers are multi-ganged or mounted in close proximity to each other, the maximum load rating is to be derated to 750W (3A). The overtemperature compensation feature may reduce the maximum attainable brightness if dimmers are too closely spaced. 6.5 Ceiling Fans Some ceiling fan models produce audible humming noise when used in conjunction with phase-control fan speed controllers. Careful selection of fan make and model will minimise this effect. Copyright 2002 Gerard Industries Pty Ltd Page 4
