Welcome Welcome to the Neighborhood Dutchess County is a county in the state of New York. Poughkeepsie is the county seat. The county was created in 1683, one of New York's first twelve counties, and later organized in 1713. It is located in the Mid-Hudson Region of the Hudson Valley, north of New York City. From 1683 to 1715 most of the settlers in Dutchess County were Dutch. Many had moved in from Albany and Ulster Counties. They settled along the Fishkill Creek, and in the areas that are now Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck. From 1715 to 1730, most new settlers in Dutchess county were German. New Englanders were the main new settlers in Dutchess County from 1730 until 1775. Hyde Park overlooks the Hudson River, which is where Franklin D. Roosevelt lived in his family home. That home is now the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, which is managed by the National Park Service. Dutchess County was primarily agricultural, prior to the 1960s. Since then, the southwestern part of the county has developed into a largely residential area. It is suburban in character, with many of its residents commuting to jobs in New York City and Westchester County. The northern and eastern regions of the county have remained rural with large farmlands. However at the same time residences were developed, which are used during the summer and/or on weekends, by people living in the New York City urban area. The area is full of history, fine arts, shopping, and many outdoor activities. It s the kind of place that is great for anyone to relocate or just take a getaway. 2 Online Resources: www.dutchessny.gov Wikipedia www.dutchesstourism.com How to Use This Resource & Relocation Guide provides you with the essential information you may need in an easy to follow This Guide format so that your move or visit to the area goes smoothly.
