Tunnel Statistics From March through December 2018, the Anacostia River Tunnel prevented 4.57 billion gallons of sewage, and nearly 900 tons of trash, solids and debris from entering the Anacostia. The First Street Tunnel has performed well in mitigating the sewer flooding and basement backups in Bloomingdale and its surrounding neighborhoods. Since placed into operation in October 2016, it has captured a cumulative volume of over 20 million gallons of combined sewage during peak rain events. 8

How Is the Tunnel Constructed? Modern Soft Ground Tunneling: 1. The TBM is pushed against the ground using hydraulic jacks or rams to provide support and limit ground movements. 3 2. A circular plate on the front cuts into the ground with cutting tools. 1 3. Thick steel cylinder supports the ground until the concrete lining is installed. 4. Who Are the Main Street Organizations in DC? National program started in 1980. The Main Street Approach is based on four key points: Organization of commercial revitalization efforts (e.g., developing and sustaining financial and volunteer resources) Promotion of neighborhood commercial districts (e.g., branding campaigns and special events) and individual businesses operating therein; Designs affecting the physical environment of the commercial district (e.g., clean teams and streetscape improvements) and the appearance of business storefronts and interiors; and Economic Vitality including business retention, recruitment, and expansion DC Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) is the primary funding mechanism for the 19 Main Street organizations established in the District. DC Main Streets promote the revitalization of traditional business districts. Community Concerns Typical Structure Monitoring Devices Where Necessary A monitoring program will measure and document movements. Instrumentation data is routinely reviewed by engineers from the Contractor and DC Water. A Right of Entry between DC Water and the Owner is required for survey targets to be installed and monitored on private property. Survey targets will only be placed on the exterior of structures. Survey targets will be measured daily when excavation occurs nearby. 32
