01 June, 2007 USG LIBRETTO GMS CEILING ILLUMINATION OPPORTUNITIES The Libretto GMS ceiling system allows for a wide variety of creative illumination opportunities. Lighting can be integrated from both above and below the Libretto GMS ceiling system depending upon the application and design intention. This document is intended to be used as a guide for illustrating the various lighting opportunities available to the end user. Lighting for the Libretto GMS can enhance the ceiling itself as a decorative element and/or add aesthetic appeal to the environment in which it resides. USG can provide a fire rated fiberglass material to cover the perforations. The material softens and diffuses any light from above it. Backlit illumination of the ceiling can be achieved by various means depending upon how the Libretto GMS will be hung in its environment and design intent of the space. The Libretto GMS ceiling is versatile enough to produce an almost infinite range of illumination possibilities; from bright, even illumination to softer and more dramatic effects. Lighting systems can be controlled via a dimming system to provide a greater range of scenes. The use of colored film or gels provides static color background to the Libretto GMS system. Programmable color changing fixtures can also be incorporated to deliver a much more theatrical effect that can be tailored to coincide with seasons, holidays or special events. 1

Sketch 1 The use of linear fluorescent fixtures can provide an effective and even illumination of backlighting on the ceiling itself and/or creating an indirect source of lighting above. 2

Sketch 2 For Libretto GMS ceilings suspended at greater distances from the primary ceiling directional sources can be used. The directional sources can be mounted on the primary ceiling to illuminate the Libretto GMS ceiling helping to maintain a clean appearance. 3

Sketch 3 Task lighting can be added below the ceiling to accent objects such as artwork, corporate logos, seating areas, or reception counters. By utilizing the systems perforations unique patterns or text can be projected onto the floor or walls by utilizing a directional light source above the ceiling. 4

Sketch 4 Decorative elements can be added below the ceiling to enhance the under surface or to help define the space in which the Libretto GMS ceiling is hung. 5

Sketch 5 Programmable color fixtures can be incorporated to expand the design possibilities further. The fixtures can create a general wash or be used to compliment the geometry of the Libretto GMS ceiling. 6

Image 1 Only the decorative low-voltage lighting mounted below the Libretto GMS ceiling is on. The lamps are 10watts each. Image 2 The decorative low-voltage lighting mounted below the Libretto GMS ceiling is on. Directional 10 degree beam metal halide lamps oriented above the Libretto GMS ceiling are also on. Sheets of colored film are placed inside the top ceiling allowing color to seen through the perforations from below. This effect also creates colorful reflections on the adjacent walls. 7

Image 3 The decorative low-voltage lighting mounted below the Libretto GMS ceiling is on. These fixtures can be easily focused to illuminate artwork or work surfaces below. The halogen directional light sources are on but in a dimmed lighting mode. Image 4 The 39watt 10 degree metal halide directional sources oriented above the ceiling are on. The halogen 75watt 8 degree directional sources are on but in a dimmed mode. The 35watt low voltage directional sources mounted beneath the upper ceiling panel are on. These sources are directed at open perforated holes to cast pattern on the walls below. 8

Ambers, yellow, and red color films on the upper Libretto GMS ceiling not only provide color to the ceiling but also reflect texture and color on the adjacent walls. See image 12. The lighting used is metal halide and halogen directional sources. The halogen is dimmed. 11

Image 9 Image 10 Pattern is created on the walls from two low voltage directional sources mounted below the upper ceiling. These fixtures are aimed at a single predetermined set of open perforations in the lower ceiling. 12

. Image 12a Image 12b Programmable, color changing LED fixtures placed above the upper ceiling and at the perimeter of the lower ceiling create both color on the ceiling and adjacent walls. Two LED wash fixtures are used above the upper ceiling. Six thin profile LED cove fixtures are used for the lower ceiling. Programming allows for the LED fixtures to produce either the same color, or have differing appearances. The two low voltage directional sources are also on, resulting in white pattern on the walls through the color and shadow. 15

Additional Installation Photos - Linear Fluorescent Strips Fixtures used were two-lamp, side mounted T5 fluorescent units. The 24 length fixture utilized (2) 14watt T5 lamps. The fixtures were placed roughly 2 apart. Using the side mounted lamps oriented parallel with the curve helped to provide for even illumination and elimination of hot spots. IMAGE 1b Different inset panels were tested. From left to right: Prismatic Lens, USG provided Fiberglass, Milk Plexiglas, Color Film fused to fiberglass. The USG fiberglass is the preferred method of diffusing the light source. IMAGE 2b Linear fluorescent sources suspended at two heights for testing, each following the shape of the radius. The use of reflectors provides additional control of the light. 20

IMAGE 3b The goal was to achieve even light distribution without having visible hot spots. Blue and Red colored films were added to illustrate how color can be added to the back lit illuminated glow Low Voltage Incandescent Asymmetrical Wash Fixtures Three fixtures were located on a suspended rail about 24 above the ceiling and roughly 8 in from the larger outside radius. The flexible track can be shaped to match the ceiling panel configuration. The fixtures were space approximately 24 apart. Each fixture utilized (2) 35watt lamps. The use of the low wattage incandescent wash fixtures was to provide a directional source from one side. Using this mounting location we are able to create additional possibilities for the designer by projecting light through the perforated openings not covered. Patterns, images, logos or effects can be projected on the floors and walls below the ceiling. An additional benefit for the end user is the ability to dim the fixtures further expanding design considerations. Provides for a more dramatic and softer glow through the perforations than the more even coverage of the fluorescent option. 21

IMAGE 4b Different inset panels were tested. From left to right: Prismatic Lens, USG provided Fiberglass, Milk Plexiglas, Color Film fused to fiberglass. The USG fiberglass is the preferred method of diffusing the light source. IMAGE 5b The use of one side only mounted fixtures may benefit ease of maintenance in some conditions. 22

IMAGE 6b A more dramatic and softer appeal for the ceiling glow IMAGE 7b Patterns created on the walls and floor from light passing through open perforations. Projected light could be visual cues for way-finding. 23

Perimeter Mounted Programmable Color Linear LED Fixtures Three linear LED fixtures were located at the inside edge of the small radius side of the ceiling. One fixture per panel. The fixtures are 12 in length and about 1 in diameter. Provides the opportunity for programmable color to radiate from the inside edge outward for enhanced effect. Can be balanced with decorative and direction fixtures suspended below the ceiling at the opposite end. IMAGE 8b LED fixtures changing color, view from above. IMAGE 9b LED fixtures changing color, view from below. Ability to dramatically enhance an environment. Fixture places on one side only. Photo does not truly represent actual effect. 24

Center Mounted Programmable Color LED Fixture One LED fixture was centrally located over the ceiling to provide a more even distribution of programmable color light. The fixture is about the size of a small shoe box cover. It is approximately 5 by 12 with a depth of an inch for the luminaire itself. Allows for color to be added above without the need for any film material. IMAGE 10b Single LED fixture mounted above. IMAGE 11b LED fixture changing color, view from below. Ability to dramatically enhance an environment. Photo does not truly represent actual effect 25

IMAGE 12b Patterns created on the walls and floor from light passing through open perforations. Decorative and Directional Luminaires A thin, flexible low voltage rail can be suspended through the perforated openings. Thin insulated low voltage cable and aircraft cable easily pass through punched openings in the ceiling panel. Lighting system is hung independent of the ceiling. The flexible track can be shaped to match the ceiling panel configuration. A decorative element can be utilized to create reflection and interest on the underside of the ceiling. A directional source can be added to highlight an object, art work, or work surface below. This may be important when large expanses of the ceiling need to have an opportunity to provide light below it. IMAGE 13b Many options of luminaries are available for the designer. Additional reflections on the ceiling add visual interest in an otherwise surface in silhouette. 26
