University of Ishik College of Engineering Department of Interior Design Interior Design Studio Health Building [The Impact of Light upon the perception of interior spaces] [Fifth Lecture] Prepared by M.Sc. Nazik Jamal
Light Factor Our ability to see well is affected not only by the amount of light available for illumination but also by the following factors :- 1. Brightness refers to how much light energy is reflected by a surface. 2. Glare is bright light which can interfere with visual perception. Glare is caused by a bright source directly in the field of vision, called direct glare, and glare from a glossy or polished surface, which reflects the light source is called reflected glare. 3. Diffusion is a measure of a light direction and dispersion as it emanates from its source.
Light Factor 4. Color of light, the spectral distribution of electrical light sources varies with the type of lamp, for example the incandescent bulb can produce a yellow-white light, while a cool white fluorescent produces a blue-white light.
Light Source Pattern 1. General lighting provides uniform illumination over the entire area of a room, allowing flexibility in the placement of work stations.
The last type is cove lighting relativttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt ttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt tttttttttttttkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk kttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt ely small areas. When Light Source Pattern 2. Local lighting provides high illumination on relatively small areas.
Light Source Pattern 2. When it used with general lighting is called supplementary lighting.
Light Source Pattern 3. Accent lighting is a form of focal lighting that creates focal points or rhythm tic patterns of light and dark with a space.
Light Source Pattern It can be used to relief the monotony of ambient lighting.
Fallen Light Pattern[scallop] The first type is a scallop pattern of light which occurs when a conical beam of light encounters room surfaces.
Fallen Light Pattern[wall washer ] The second one is a wall washer lighting that can provide relatively uniform illumination on vertical surfaces to give the visual impression of enlarged space.
Fallen Light Pattern[wall washer ] Lighting a wall by luminaries located close to the plane of the wall.
Fallen Light Pattern [wall washer-valance] valance lighting directs the light upward or downward from a light source concealed by horizontal board or band.
Fallen Light Pattern [wall washer-valance] The last type is cove lighting
Fallen Light Pattern [wall washer-cornice] Cornice lighting directs the light downward from an interior cornice at the edge of a ceiling.
Fallen Light Pattern [wall washer-cornice] Lighting from sources which are shielded by a panel parallel to the wall and attached to the ceiling or to the upper edge of the wall and which distribute light over the wall.
Fallen Light Pattern [wall washer-cornice] The last type is cove lighting
Fallen Light Pattern [Focal] The third type is focal light which used to emphasize objects or to draw attention to a part of the visual field.
Fallen Light Pattern [Cove] The last type is cove lighting which can be used to direct light toward ceilings.
Fallen Light Pattern [Cove] Cove lighting directs the light upward from an interior cornice at the edge of a ceiling.
Fallen Light Pattern cove lighting and cornice lighting
Fallen Light Pattern
Light System 1- Direct fixtures can be used for focus and emphasis.
Light System 2- Semi direct small percentage of light directed upward tends to soften shadows caused by direct luminaries.
Light System 3- Indirect this type of luminaries can be used to create a feeling of height rooms with low ceilings.
Light System 4- Semi indirect light reflected from the ceiling tends to soften shadows and improve brightness ratios.
Light System 5-Direct indirect these luminaries provide approximately equal light to the floor and ceiling and very little light to the sides.
Light System 6- Diffuse lighting these fixtures provides approximately equal light in all directions.
