Sitemorse Top 250 Global Retail Websites Q3 2014 Sep 2014 Sweden-based ICA AB fends off rivals to hold place as best performing global retail site Nordic retailing conglomerate ICA AB continues to operate the world s best performing retail website as it retains in the top spot in the table of the Top 250 global retail websites tested exclusively for the World Retail Congress by Sitemorse in Q3. It held off stiff competition from US-based Big Lots that moved up 26 places into second spot with a score of 7.00 out of 10 and rival Scandinavian retailer Norway-based NorgesGruppen that climbed 15 places to third spot with its score of 6.65. These were among the strongest performers in the Top 25 players of the ranked table although they could not match ITM Developpement Internationale from France that jumped 122 places to 15 th spot, which makes it the only French merchant in the upper echelon in Q3. The mainstay of this elite grouping is the US with seven merchants, Germany with five and Japan with three. The UK used to have a strong presence but for the last few quarters it has failed to have any representation. The highest placed British retailer is Next in 36 th spot, followed by Iceland in 50 th spot. The scores for the Top 250 table are created by Sitemorse (www.sitemorse.com) using its automated software that reads and reviews the first 125 pages of each retailer s site and places them in a ranked table based on user experience (UX), governance, risk and compliance (GRC), and search capability (SEO). Other big climbers this quarter include: Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, which moved up 147 places to 27 th spot with a score of 4.52; Limited brands jumped 93 places to 34 th spot; and JC Penney moved up 87 places to 115 th spot. The latter has been undergoing a minor renaissance of late following the return of its former CEO who is back at the helm and recently introduced a new look store format in New York.
Those retailers faring less well in Q3 and experiencing the biggest falls in the table include some major global heavyweights. These include Spain-based fashion giant Inditex, which fell 118 places to 138 th spot, C&A Europe that declined 108 places to 155 th spot, and US-based food retailer Albertson s which slipped 104 places to 174 th spot. This still placed them above the lower end of the table where yet again Japanese and US-based retailers figure very strongly among the bottom 10. The former numbered two in Q2 but this has risen to four this quarter as Best Denki and Takashimaya Company are joined by Izumi Co Ltd and Yedobashi Camera. On the US side Dillard s and Macy s are joined by Belk. Rather worryingly for the UK it has a number of retailers positioned just above this bottom grouping, with Alliance Boots in 190 th spot, Kingfisher in 192 nd spot following a fall of 19 places, and Debenhans in 202 nd spot with a decline of two places. This puts the UK department store just one place below Amazon that rather surprisingly for such an online behemoth is positioned in a very lowly 201 st place in the table in Q3 Although Sitemorse tested the top 250 global retailers, the final table contains only 216 names because companies were excluded from the process if they used assistive technology such as JavaScript, which breaks the general rules of accessibility of internet sites, according to Sitemorse.
