REAGENT CHEMICALS Atomic Weights of the Elements 2011 pubs.acs.org/doi/book/10.1021/acsreagents Scaled to the relative atomic mass, A r( 12 C) = 12, where 12 C is a neutral atom in its nuclear and electronic ground state. The atomic weights, A r(e), of many elements vary because of variations in the abundances of their isotopes in normal materials. For 12 such elements, an atomic weight interval is given with the symbol [a,b] to denote the set of atomic weight values in normal materials; thus, a A r(e) b for element E. The symbols a and b denote the bounds of the interval [a,b]. If users of atomic weight data need specific values for those elements with standard atomic weights given as intervals, please use the atomic weight values given in the table titled Conventional Atomic Weight Values for Selected Elements. For 72 elements, A r(e) values and their evaluated uncertainties (in parentheses, following the last significant figure to which they are attributed) are given. Names of elements with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117, and 118 are provisional. Appendix Downloaded via 91.207.62.42 on August 6, 2019 at 07:20:01 (UTC). However, four such elements (Ba, Pa, Th, and U) do have a characteristic terrestrial isotopic composition, and for these elements, standard atomic weights are tabulated. g Geological specimens are known in which the element has an isotopic composition outside the limits for normal material. The difference between the atomic weight of the element in such materials and that given in the table may exceed the stated uncertainty. m Modified isotopic compositions may be found in commercially available material because the material has been subjected to an undisclosed or inadvertent isotopic fractionation. Substantial deviations in atomic weight of the element from that given in the table can occur. r Range in isotopic composition of normal terrestrial material prevents a more precise Ar(E) being given; the tabulated Ar(E) value and uncertainity should be applicable to normal material.
