Storage area networks (SANs), remote locations, disaster recovery. Finisar s UltraSpan ROPA 3U amplification terminal is an FPGA and micro processor-controlled unit for providing pump power to a remote EDF placed 80-120km away. The unit features six pump laser drawers providing up to 1.6W of pump power in the 1420-1490nm band to a fiber line. The amplifier also features automatic power reduction (APR) based on multiple independent laser safety mechanisms. This allows both the amplifier to be classified as class 1M laser products (according to IEC 60825-1, and CDRH 21 CFR 1040.10) with respect to eye and skin laser safely of the operating personnel, and also protects optical and electronic gear deployed along the lines. The same mechanisms are also used for alerting system management upon line deterioration and reduction in pump power reaching the remote passive EDF unit. The amplifier includes two redundant and hot-swappable 48VDC power supplies, as well as a hotswappable cooling fan unit. The unit may be controlled via the simple network management protocol (SNMP) through a standard Ethernet RJ45 connector, or using an IP based GUI. Finisar Corporation 2014 Page 1

Pump power is launched through this connector into the optical transmission line. The signal enters the ROPA amplifier from the transmission line through this port. The signal exits the ROPA through this port. Used to monitor the signal exiting from the output port (1% tap) Finisar Corporation 2014 Page 2
