Firstly, it considers grades effectively the reliability of a system in terms of its power sources. For new and many existing dwellings, grade D is the minimum standard comprising interlinked mains alarms with backup, a requirement matched in all the national building regulation guidelines applying to newbuild. Backup provides power for the alarm to continue functioning when mains power is lost, for example when cabling is damaged in a fire or when supplies have been interrupted by prepayment cards running out. According to BS 5839-6, for new homes and most existing, interconnected smoke or heat alarms are required in living rooms and a heat alarm in every kitchen (where most fires start), as well as smoke alarms in circulation areas. But the current Approved Document B (applying to England and Wales) effectively requires smoke alarms in corridors with heat alarms in some kitchens only. In Scotland, Northern Ireland and Eire supporting guidance to Building Regulations is fully in line with BS 5839-6. Although not a recommendation of BS 5839-6 or Building Regulations, there is a strong case for smoke alarms in bedrooms as well, both to detect fires and wake sleeping occupants. p3

It is mains operated with rechargeable battery (providing 3 months continuous backup) and easy to set up, using just two buttons supported by LEDs. It can communicate with other Slick Wireless Base units and also the Remote Test & Hush unit where required using radio signals. Up to 15 Wireless Alarm Bases can be interconnected in one system. The Remote Test & Hush unit is simply wireless linked to a Kidde Slick Wireless Alarm Base and can be used to test that alarm. It can also be used to silence the linked alarm or all but the initiating interconnected alarms. Carbon Monoxide Alarms Carbon Monoxide Alarms Kidde Fyrnetics CO alarms comply with BS EN 50291:2001 and enjoy CORGI approval and BSi Kitemark. The hard-wired alarms sample the air every 15 seconds, rather than the 60 seconds or more intervals of some products. Kidde Fyrnetics produce their own CO cells the key component rather than buying them in and every sensor is tested under CO. Additionally, safer and greener deionised water is used, rather than acid based electrolytes that suffer variations in electrolytic concentrations. The digital display version includes extra features including memory and peak recall facilities and parts per million shown when CO is detected. Sealed-in battery CO alarms also available. Sealed-in Battery CO Alarm YCO is the very first battery carbon monoxide alarm range with a full 10-year guarantee. Specially designed for quick and YCO simple installation by non-electricians and for low cost of ownership, both models are small in size with a neat appearance and can be wall-mounted or used free-standing.
