RAISING THE STANDARD: THE NEW WEATHERMAKER 80% FURNACES Imagine an 80% furnace line that s easier to service, incredibly versatile and more appealing to homeowners. Sounds like a dealer s dream-come-true. And it should: the new 8000 line was designed for Carrier dealers by Carrier dealers. DESIGNED FOR DEALERS Through Carrier s Partners In Development (PID) program, many Carrier dealers from across the country have been an integral part of the design process for the new furnace line right from the start. So it s no surprise that the primary new features of the redesigned line which includes single-speed, two-stage and variable-speed models have a direct impact on a dealer s bottom line. The biggest dealer benefits: increased installation flexibility, reduced stocking requirements and enhanced serviceability all of which can contribute to higher dealer profit margins. 8000VS (58CVA, as in ComfortHeat Variable Speed, or 58CVX for low NOx) 8000TS (58CTA, as in ComfortHeat Two Stage, or 58CTX for low NOx) 8000 (58DLA, as in Deluxe, or 58DLX for low NOx) Standard model (58STA, as in Standard, or 58STX for low NOx) WEATHERMAKER 8000 FURNACES 1
MAKING LIFE EASIER AND PROFITS HIGHER While the specific models offer different performance features, all of them share the basic design benefits that make a dealer s life easier. Even the 8000 badge is versatile: just pop it off and snap it back on so it s facing right-side-up. Installation flexibility. The most striking change in the new furnaces is a shorter (33 1/3") height and a true multipoise design that requires little modification (remove three screws and rotate the vent elbow), even for downflow or horizontal applications. The innovative design enables the new furnace models to be used in upflow, downflow, horizontal left and horizontal right applications, and makes a downflow variable-speed application available for the first time. It also allows for 13 possible venting configurations (see graphic at bottom). Plus, with the badge s new design, you can simply pop off the logo, and snap it back on so it s always facing right-side-up, no matter what the furnace orientation. The combination of the shorter size and the multipoise capability gives dealers significant installation flexibility and system design advantages, such as freeing up space in smaller homes for additional closet space or to allow room for air cleaners, humidifiers, better plenums, etc. Airflow Configurations Upflow Downflow Horizontal Left Venting Configurations 1 Horizontal Right 4 The true multipoise design of the new 8000 line allows for upflow, downflow, horizontal left and horizontal right applications. 2 3 5 * 6 Upflow Downflow 8 9 12 7 10 11 Horizontal Left Horizontal Right * A protective vent chase is required for this application. 13 (baker s dozen) Moving two screws and rotating the vent elbow is all that s required to accommodate 13 possible venting configurations. 2 WEATHERMAKER 8000 FURNACES
Reduced inventory requirements. The multipoise capability has positive implications for inventory management as well. Dealers can accommodate 60 percent more applications than they could with the prior design, and can do it with 40 percent fewer SKUs. So the design change simultaneously reduces stocking requirements and increases application possibilities, which can significantly boost dealer profit margins. Easier service access. The new models also will feature a raised-door design that gives service technicians open access to the controls and components, rather than having to reach in between the sides of the cabinet and work in a confined space. With easier access, less time is needed to service the units. The new raised-door design makes controls and components easier to access, for faster, more convenient service. Chimney-friendly. An additional benefit of the multipoise design is that the single stage models now are chimney-friendly compatible, so there s no need to stock a specific furnace for chimney-friendly-only applications, such as the 58YAV. NEXT GENERATION CONTROLS: GREATER FLEXIBILITY, EASIER SERVICE While the most visible changes to the 8000 line may be on the outside, your customers could notice the biggest benefits from improvements on the inside especially to the control board. Three fan speed settings. With the three upper-tier furnaces, dealers can now offer customers three continuous fan speeds (the heating speed, the cooling speed, and now a third discretionary speed, usually slower for continuous fan use). The homeowner has the ability to choose the fan speed for continuous fan operation at the thermostat, by simply turning the fan switch off, and then back on one to three seconds later. The availability of slower fan speeds enables homeowners to enjoy the benefits of continuous fan operation such as cleaner, fresher air and more even temperatures throughout their home while keeping sound levels and energy usage to a minimum. Enhanced dehumidification. When combined with a Thermidistat TM Control and operating in cooling mode, the three top-tier models can automatically reduce fan speed to help reduce excess humidity in the air. Lowering the humidity level allows homeowners to enjoy greater comfort without having to lower the thermostat set point. In addition, the fan will shut off at the end of the cool to dehumidify cycle, eliminating the re-evaporation of condensate from the evaporator coil. Multiple fan speed settings allow Carrier systems to remove more humidity; the Variable-Speed 8000VS provides super-dehumidification. 4 WEATHERMAKER 8000 FURNACES
Two-Speed Puron compatible. The three top-tier furnaces also offer full two-speed A/C compatibility. When there is a call for low-stage cooling, the furnace control board reduces the fan speed, for improved dehumidification. Intelligent cool staging. Before, a two-speed thermostat or Thermidistat TM Control would have been required to control the staging of the outdoor unit. Now dealers have a choice, because the furnace control can direct the two-speed air conditioner or heat pump to operate in high speed or low speed, using the same type of patented adaptive algorithm that has been the hallmark of Carrier s MVP heat staging for years. (But dealers should choose carefully: the Thermidistat Control provides its own remarkable set of benefits!) Dealers can now control a two-speed air conditioner directly from the furnace (top three models) or through the Thermidistat Control, which offers a variety of additional benefits. Improved diagnostics and non-volatile memory. The new control board features an extensive list of LED fault codes to help technicians troubleshoot problems. And, with a three-hour lockout and an auto-reset feature, fault codes won t be lost due to a power outage, and no manual reset is required. 8000VS 8000TS 8000 Standard Carrier s new electronic control board provides enhanced communication and comfort capabilities. 8000 Control Board Features Product Standard 8000 8000TS 8000VS EAC Terminals Humidifier Terminal Dehumidification Function Super Dehumidification Adjustable Blower Off Delay Smart Cooling Blower Off Delay Service Connection Service Information Storage Communication Port Adjustable Constant Fan @ Stat Low Constant Fan Speed Very Low Constant Fan Two-Speed A/C Compatible Intelligent Heat Staging Intelligent Cool Staging WEATHERMAKER 8000 FURNACES 5
FOR HOMEOWNERS: QUIET, AFFORDABLE COMFORT [The homeowner] doesn t have to turn the TV up now when the furnace comes on. She s tickled pink. Rich Dykstra PID Dealer While the new 8000 line offers homeowners several impressive benefits as well, the most significant of them is one they shouldn t even notice: dramatically reduced sound levels. Here are some highlights: Quiet operation. With lower burner noise, added sound baffling and relocated components, the new 80% line will offer noticeably lower sound levels even the single-speed models. In fact, sound level tests indicate that the new models are the quietest of all the 80% furnaces Carrier tested. Easier filter maintenance. On the three upper-tier models, an external media cabinet is supplied with the furnace, so filter access can t get much easier than that. But even on the base model, replacing a filter is simpler because the homeowner does not need to open up the unit to reach the filter. The top three models include a convenient external media cabinet, making filter access a breeze for dealers or homeowners. Improved comfort and dehumidification. While homeowners with variable-speed models have always enjoyed the ultimate combination of energy savings and comfort, the intelligent cool staging feature and three fan speed presets on the control board now allow single-speed customers to enjoy a taste of them as well. A lowspeed setting for continuous fan can enable homeowners to have better air quality and more consistent temperatures without exorbitant energy costs. A low-speed setting for continuous fan now lets single-speed customers enjoy greater comfort. 6 WEATHERMAKER 8000 FURNACES
PROVEN PERFORMANCE IN THE TOUGHEST ENVIRONMENTS While the redesigned 8000 line may seem new, the idea for it has actually been around for a while. The line has been developed over a four-year period, in conjunction with Carrier Partners In Development dealers to address their needs and help them improve their profitability. To make sure the new design exceeds expectations, Carrier has had roughly 100 Limited Production Run (LPR) units in field testing with PID and other dealers and consumers across the country since November 2000 (see map). An additional 32 units have been undergoing grueling reliability testing at the factory since April 2000 with twice the normal testing requirements on the heat exchanger life (200,000 cycles). The LPR field installation criteria were also mixed according to a specific matrix (see table), to make sure the line was tested across a variety of installation variables. Specific criteria included poise (upflow, etc.), fuel (natural gas or LP), location (attic, closet, garage, etc.) and vent type (chimney or category 1). The input received from the initial PID planning sessions and the LPR field testing has resulted in several mid-stream design improvements. Overall, the comments from dealers (see next page) and homeowners alike have been very positive and have confirmed that the new line is exactly what dealers asked for, enhancing their profitability and offering a wide range of benefits for dealers and consumers alike. 4 3 6 15 4 1 13 20 18 1 1 1 11 1 3 Roughly 100 LPR units have been in field testing across the U.S. since November 2000. PARTNERS IN DEVELOPMENT Created in 1998, the PID program facilitates dealer involvement from the onset of product development, to ensure that dealers needs are met from both a design and a marketing standpoint. Participating dealers are carefully selected to represent the variety of application possibilities that exist across the country. The new 8000 line is the latest innovation to be produced from this unique, collaborative effort. PID DEALER PERSPECTIVES I thought it was going to be a corporate rubber stamp process, but they really listened to us I had the opportunity to talk to [a homeowner] after we installed it, and she couldn t believe the difference in her home. It s cleaner, it s quieter, and she doesn t have to turn the TV up now when the furnace comes on. She s just tickled pink with it. Rich Dykstra D. M. Dykstra and Company Chicago, IL The multipoise capability will be a big benefit to dealers, specifically in horizontal or downflow applications... It really cuts down on the installation time It s a nice compact unit, it will fit into the spaces we need, and it s that many less products we need to keep in our inventory. Tim Cropp Cropp-Metcalfe Fairfax, VA The serviceability of the unit was definitely a big concern to the PID team early on as we were shortening the height of the furnace. That led to the door design and bringing all the controls forward. Phil Favret Favret Company Columbus, OH I ve had zero problems with the unit It gets an A+ from all the people in our organization. Reve Porter Reve Porter Inc. Indianapolis, IN I think they did a very good job of listening and turning what we asked for into a reality. J.D. Webb Webb Air Conditioning Co. Ft. Q & A: THE NEW WEATHERMAKER 8000 LINE Q: Will the new line replace all existing 80% furnaces? A: Yes. All single stage, ComfortHeat two-stage, and ComfortHeat variable speed 80's will be converted to this new platform. Q: Will there be a chimney-friendly product to replace the 58YAV? A: All 8000 furnaces are targeted for chimney-friendly applications, including two-stage and variable speed models. (Some of the LPR applications are two-stage chimney vent applications, in fact.) We are continuing with qualification testing and should have final confirmation by May 1, 2002. Q: Will twinning be allowed? A: All 8000 furnaces are targeted for twinning applications, including twostage and variable speed. We expect to have a final answer when qualification testing is completed, no later than May 1, 2002. Q: In horizontal applications, will the 8000 furnace be approved for bottom return (as opposed to end return only)? A: All 8000 furnaces are targeted for bottom return in horizontal applications, including two-stage and variable speed. This issue is currently being evaluated in qualification testing and should be resolved by May 1, 2002. Q: Will this furnace fit better with furnace coils? A: Yes. The flanging on both the furnace coils and the 8000 furnace has been revised to eliminate interference. The furnace coil changes will improve fit up with the condensing furnace line as well. Q: What other products are changing in conjunction with this new platform? A: From an appearance standpoint, the new door color (which is the current outdoor unit color, American Sterling) will create a better matching system. The new casing finish which includes hints of American Sterling will also be used on furnace coils and media cabinet doors. Also, the humidifier color will convert to American Sterling.
