Lighting Design Thought Process 1. What am I trying to do? 2. How am I going to do it? 3. What lamp will do what I need it to do? 4. What fixture takes that lamp? 1. What am I trying to do? 1
2. How am I going to do it? Structural constraints Style Code Restrictions Initial Cost Operating Cost Heat Wattage Consumption Size Fixture Appearance Fixture Availability Client Preferences Contractor Preferences Ease of Maintenance Color Temperature Color Rendering Dimming Capability Quality of Illumination Sustainability 3. What lamp (bulb) will do the job? Wattage consumption Photometric performance Quality of illumination Dimmability Size Heat Lamp Life Color Temperature Color Rendition 2
4. What fixture will take that lamp (bulb)? Problem You are asked to light sculptures inside of 5.5 tall niches on the side walls of a double curved staircase with a 20 tall ceiling. 3
2. How am I going to do it? In this case D = 5 C = 5 Problem You are asked to light sculptures inside of 5.5 tall niches on the side walls of a double curved staircase with a 20 tall ceiling. Answer Use an interior adjustable recessed fixture with a 90 watt PAR38 28 degree narrow flood lamp that can be aimed and changed from above in the accessible attic space. 5

If there is less than 12 change in ceiling heights, don t even do it. 2. Determine what the purpose of the cove is accent only, or productive light. 3. For even cove lighting, distance from cove light fixture to back wall of cove needs to be equal to or greater than the spacing of the lamps. 4. If you need an asymmetric reflector for greater throw, the size of the cove gets even larger. 5. When done correctly, cove lighting is a great tool to use when done poorly, it should not have been tried. 12
