Topics covered include: Manufacturer and retailer updates Retailer Tool Kit Photo of the Month BPA future products planning Presidents Day appliance promotion updates LIGHTING & SHOWERHEAD RETAIL UPDATES Reviewed the ENERGY STAR 2.0 spec changes; key findings are: Minimum rated life requirement reductions for omni and decorative LEDS from 25k hours to 15k hours will potentially reduce retail prices by 15-20% over the course of 2016; several manufacturers are developing products that meet the revised lifetime and will likely be submitted to utility programs in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (CY) The EPA has agreed to place the archived V1.1 product list for programs to reference if they chose to honor product that remains in the supply chain and on store shelves Retail LED bulb prices will decline in the US market, while CFL and halogen prices will remain static. The team believes that LEDs will require less incentive dollars due to price reductions (Appendix B) Confirmed that the GE LED Bright Stik will be ENERGY STAR certified in 2016 and available for less than $3. The product will first be made available at Sam s Club Scheduled Walmart product demonstrations during the month of April in partnership with GE. These demonstrations utilize light bars and added in-store signage. The store list and demonstration schedule will be shared with utilities in early March Simple Steps plans to launch the Waterpik 2.0 GPM Watersense rated showerhead promotion at Costco in early March; the showerhead will have a $7 utility rebate per unit The team is planning to partner with Kmart to offer CFL incentives on an end cap from 2/28 4/30 in two Washington locations. This Mix and Match promotion will allow customers to buy 3 items and get a $3 discount per item in addition to the utility incentive UTILITY ACTIVITY/FIELD UPDATES Two additional utilities committed to join the Simple Steps promotion in 2016: Simple Steps, Smart Savings 3
Grant PUD will join the Simple Steps lighting and showerhead promotion in February 2016. They will also participate in the Memorial Day appliance promotion Peninsula Light Company will join the lighting and showerhead promotion in February 2016 POP materials will be placed in early March 2016 to satisfy the new program participant POP placement 45-day contractual guidelines To improve unsatisfactory QA scores, field staff placed an increased focus on training store associates. Field staff had numerous positive interactions throughout the region and anticipate that QA scores will improve due to increased store associate knowledge Lewis County PUD visited a The Home Depot location with Simple Steps field staff management to review POP placement with the The Home Depot s merchandizing manager. To mitigate issues surrounding inadequate POP placement due to frequent replacement, the team is identifying locations that re-merchandize their products frequently and will be providing additional POP Field staff made visits to train retailers who had not participated past promotions in preparation for the President s Day appliance promotion. Field staff set up events with 18 retailers and participated in 2 internal trainings to help more effectively implement the promotion APPLIANCE RETAIL UPDATES Ramped up activities for the President s Day promotion; see President s Day Promotion Brief for partner details: Coordinated with three retail partners - Sears, Sears Hometown (SHO), and Fred s Appliances - on promotion activities to solidify agreements, confirm marketing activities and schedule in-store events Deactivated Van Dykes Appliances from 2016 promotions due to utility participation changes Began outreach with independent retailers in newly on-boarded utility partner areas. Many independent partners are interested in Memorial Day promotions onward. Attended the ENERGY STAR and EPA webinar on January 13 to discuss 2016 appliance specification changes. The next anticipated specification change for clothes washers will be in 2018; ENERGY STAR is looking to include combination all-in-one washer-dryers and washers with optional dry cycles. They are currently assessing the machines market share, energy efficiency and water efficiency and confirming that the energy used in drying cycles can be accurately measured. The team will keep abreast of ENERGY STAR happenings and the potential impact they may have on the Simple Steps appliance promotions Provided program details to GE for a program offerings presentation to Lowe s. Lowe s has been unable to join Simple Steps promotions due to administrative constraints. With GE as an advocate for Simple Steps and mid- and upstream programs, they hope to gain Lowe s support and engagement in 2016 RC Willey s, an independent retailer in Idaho, expressed interest in 2016 program participation. They would like to offer RC Willey Gift Cards with purchase of eligible products as early as the Memorial Day promotion. Posted the 2016 promotion calendar on the Simple Steps partner website. The calendar highlights five key 2016 tentative promotion windows based on existing market partners promotion periods MARKETING Delivered the President s Day promotional toolkit to utility stakeholders. Marketing templates and assets were also posted to the team s partner page. Utility toolkits for the remaining holiday promotional periods are currently under development Began development of a refreshed retail promotion toolkit. The team has been working with retailers to develop consistent tools, templates, creative suggestions and recommendations for how to execute on a successful promotion of Simple Steps-qualified measures. Development of the toolkit aims to improve the quality of promotional assets throughout the region while maintaining consistent branding for consumer recognition.
