Doc. 2272064, Rev. B Rel. 11/00 5000-ODA Amplifiers Ref. and Install. Manual Set-Up Procedures Before You Start In this section, you will find information about the following procedures: Checking the Optical Input Power, page 25 Checking the Optical Output Power, page 27 Adjusting the Optical Output Power, page 29 About Manual Shutdown Contacts, page 30 Using the LCD to Monitor Operating Parameters, page 31 Review the procedure(s) before beginning these installation procedures. Then, gather all necessary tools and equipment. (See "Tools and Equipment".) Observe the following cautions: Amp Thumb tab WARNING When powered, optical transmitters and amplifiers generate invisible, high-energy laser beams. Even when the transmitter is not powered, laser beams may be present in the incoming cable. Although you can t see them, these beams can cause tissue injury, including permanent eye damage. Whenever the optical cable is disconnected from the receiver or patch panel, avoid direct contact with the end of the cable. Be absolutely certain the optical equipment at both ends of the cable is off before performing any procedures. The procedures documented here focus on what s new or especially important for the 5000 series optical amplifier. While some safety precautions are reviewed, this manual assumes that installers have been trained in safe installation practices (for example, making optical connections or connecting DC power). Users new to cable technologies and servicing procedures should not rely on this manual for comprehensive guidance. Set-Up Set-Up Procedures 23

Doc. 2272064, Rev. B Rel. 11/00 5000-ODA Amplifiers Ref. and Install. Manual Checking the Optical Input Power In this procedure, you will check the optical input signal and connect the fiber input cable to the 5000 series optical amplifier s optical input. Warning Even when the transmitter is not powered, laser beams may be present in the optical cable. Although you can t see them, these beams can cause tissue injury, including permanent eye damage. Whenever the optical cable is disconnected from the transmitter, receiver or patch panel, avoid direct contact with the end of the cable or the optical output. 1. Turn the laser key switch to OFF. Amp Turn the key switch OFF. Figure 9. Before you begin, turn the key switch to OFF. 2. Clean all fiber connectors thoroughly. Make sure the connector on the fiber input cable matches the type on the amplifier. 3. Using an optical power meter, measure the optical power from the fiber input cable. Verify that the optical input to the amplifier is within the unit s specifications and meets system design requirements. If the optical input is too high, attenuate the signal before it enters the optical amplifier. If the optical input is too low: verify that the optical output power of the device (transmitter or optical amplifier) feeding this optical amplifier is within the designed range; check that the designed optical loss between the transmitter and the optical amplifier is in the proper range; and check for poor optical connections in the link. Doc. 2272064, Rev. B Rel. 11/00 5000-ODA Amplifiers Ref. and Install. Manual Checking the Optical Output Power Warning: Turn off the laser before you connect or disconnect fiber cables from the optical amplifier s bulkhead connectors. 1. Turn the laser key switch OFF. The yellow Laser Status LED goes out. 2. Clean all fiber connectors thoroughly. 3. Lift the spring-loaded safety shutter from (one of) the amplifier s output bulkhead connector(s). Then, plug the fiber from an optical power meter into the bulkhead. 4. Verify that the outputs you re not measuring are covered with safety shutters. Then, turn the laser key switch ON. The yellow Laser Status LED lights. Amp Back Panel Optical Output Figure 11. The amplifier s optical output connector is on the unit s back panel. (One output model shown.) 5. Check that the unit s optical output power is not more than 0.5 db below the output power specification shown on the LCD. Note: If the measured optical output power is lower than the specification, clean all connectors and measure the power again. If the optical output power is still too low, change the fiber jumper and measure again. If the output power is still too low, contact the Philips Broadband Networks Broadband Systems Center. For information about contacting the Broadband Systems Center, see About Technical Support on page vi. 6. Verify that the optical amplifier s output power launched into a length of fiber, is at or below the SBS suppression rating of the transmitter feeding it. For more information, see "Checking for an SBS Suppression Problem" on page 28. 7. Turn the laser key switch OFF. The yellow Laser Status LED will go out. Set-Up Set-Up Procedures 27

5000-ODA Amplifiers Ref. and Install. Manual Doc. 2272064, Rev. B Rel. 11/00 8. Disconnect the power meter from the bulkhead and connect the system fiber. 9. Repeat steps 1-8 to check all other optical output. Be sure to verify that the laser key switch is OFF before you connect the power meter to the bulkhead. Once you have checked all optical outputs, proceed to step 10. 10. Activate the laser(s) by turning the key switch ON. The yellow Laser Status LED will light. When you turn the key switch ON, the LCD, if clear, will turn on and start at the beginning of the LCD display cycle. 28 Set-Up Procedures

Doc. 2272064, Rev. B Rel. 11/00 5000-ODA Amplifiers Ref. and Install. Manual Adjusting the Optical Output Power You may adjust the amplifier s optical output power from the front panel. Using these controls, you can increase the optical output power by up to 0.5 db or decrease the optical output power by 1.25 db from the factory-setting. Decreases the optical output power in 0.25 db steps. Resets optical output power to factory setting. Increases the optical output power in 0.25 db steps. Set-Up Amp Front Panel Figure 12. 5000-ODA Amplifiers Ref. and Install. Manual Doc. 2272064, Rev. B Rel. 11/00 About Manual Shutdown Contacts The 5000 series optical amplifiers are shipped with a jumper wire across the manual shutdown contacts on the back panel. Unless you plan to connect the unit to a device driver which will provide shutdown control, leave the jumper wire in place, as shown below. Manual Shutdown Contact (two center screws only) GND Shutdown Figure 13. The manual shutdown contact is on the amplifier s rear panel. Warning To avoid damage, verify that the ground (GND) terminal is connected to control signal ground (ground) before connecting it to equipment used for manual shutdown. 5000-ODA Amplifiers Ref. and Install. Manual Doc. 2272064, Rev. B Rel. 11/00 Alarms and Warnings The amplifier s internal control circuitry checks that several key operating parameters fall within pre-set limits. When any of these parameters exceed the pre-set limits or thresholds, an alarm or warning will appear on the LCD. An alarm indicates the unit is at immediate risk for failure or that a failure has already occurred. A warning indicates that the unit is in danger of operating out of specifications. Alarm and Warning Thresholds The table below lists the thresholds for several key operating parameters. An alarm will appear on the LCD if either of the alarm thresholds is exceeded. A warning will appear on the LCD if either of the warning thresholds is exceeded. Note: The alarm LED also will light during an alarm or warning condition. A red light indicates an alarm while a yellow light indicates a warning.
