Division IV: Botanical Arts Horticulture Campaign at Home SECTION A Patriotic Support Campaign During World War II a variety of media products encouraged patriotic support of the war effort. Posters and radio broadcasts encouraged planting of victory gardens and purchase of war bonds. Films highlighted the courage of our soldiers and maintained civilian morale. Eligible for Botanical Arts Horticulture Award. A rosette of light brown ribbons will be awarded if warranted. CLASS 1. Hollywood Films A Container Grown Fairy Garden. Emphasis is not necessarily on plant material but some live plant material/s must be included. Containers not to exceed 18 in diameter. NO entries over 20 lbs. Staged on 6 x 30 deep x 30 high tables skirted to the floor in black fabric. Each specimen must be correctly and clearly labeled with the current scientific designation and in a manner to easily identify the specimen's location in the garden. The best overall Design Excellence Award and ribbon. We also give a club award entitled the People s Choice Award and a Novice Award for all first time blue ribbon winners. Our horticulture is always lush and plentiful. We will be offering Awards of Merit, Growers Choice Awards, a Collectors Showcase Award and Arboreal Awards as well as a Divisional Award; The Award of Horticultural Excellence. Our schedule follows the NGC Flower Show Handbook (HB) revised 2017, and is the law of the show. Our educational exhibits are based on two aspects of interest to garden clubs. The Botanical Arts Horticulture Section is all about the unusual naturally contrived plant material and Fairy Gardens. VICTORY CELEBRATION 28 5

Victory of the Grand Alliance The Plant City Garden Club, Inc. is proud to present a tribute to the men and women who have served our country in the Second World War. The Second World War, or WWII, is generally considered to have lasted from 1939-1945, although many of the world s countries had been involved in hostilities throughout the 1930 s. Most of the world s countries fought in WWII either as part of the Axis or the Allies. The major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and military capabilities behind the war effort making the home front an important part of the war. The Grand Alliance linked the three major Allied powers of WWII: the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Kingdom. Italian fascism, Japanese militarism and Nazi expansionism all played a role in the outbreak of WWII as they worked together as the Axis. Up until 1942 the Axis was successful in their aggression. 1942 was a turning point in the war as Japan lost the Battle of Midway, while Germany and Italy were defeated in North Africa. In 1943 the Soviet Union went on the offensive on the eastern Front, the United States and the United Kingdom attacked Italy and the island hopping campaign began in the Pacific. During 1944-1945 the Japanese lost ground in China and Burma, and their Navy was crippled as they were forced back to their home islands in the Pacific. Victory in Europe was 8 May 1945. Victory in the Pacific was 15 August 1945. Division III: Special Exhibits Campaign at Home Section A: The Home Front Mobilization of the US industrial and economic might meant the home front was vitally important. Increased production of weapons resulted in rationing, manpower allocation and food shortages victory gardens reduced pressure on public food supplies. Eligible for the Educational Top Exhibitor Award. A rosette of brown and white ribbons will be offered. The purpose is to inform and instruct the viewers on goals and major projects. Staged on a 6 table or as designer wishes to use the allotted space. Exhibitor has freedom of components. Exhibit 1. Blue Star Memorial Marker The Blue Star Memorial Marker program was instigated by National Garden Clubs, Inc. to honor those soldiers who had fought in world wars. The markers were erected along highways and byways of this country. Many are still maintained by Garden Clubs including the memorial marker in Plant City at the Veterans Park located on Wheeler St. This exhibit will show the markers and the meaning behind the tribute. A 6 table is available upon request. Exhibitor provides table covering. Exhibit 2. Victory Gardens Victory Gardens also called war gardens or food gardens for defense. They were vegetable, fruit and herb gardens planted during World War II to reduce pressure on the public food supply brought on by the war efforts. Victory Gardens were a part of daily life on the home front. A 6 table is available upon request. Exhibitor provides table covering. 27 6

GENERAL RULES EDUCATION RULES 1. Education Exhibits may be the work of more than one individual or organization unless a Student Judge or an Accredited Judge is seeking exhibiting credit for preparing an education exhibit. 2. An exhibit must occupy a minimum of eighteen (18) square feet surface area. 3. Some plant material is required. 4. Six foot tables will be provided 5. Advance registration with the Education Entries Chairman is required by November 1, 2017. 6. The Scale of Points for Education Exhibits is listed in the Handbook for Flower Shows, Chapter 14. 1. This National Garden Club Flower Show will conform to the standards established by the National Garden Clubs, Inc. and the schedule will be the authority for this show. Show entries are open to all members of Plant City Garden Club, Inc. and members of FFGC/NGC, Inc. 2. The building will be open for placement of designs Thursday, Nov. 9th from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. or Friday, Nov. 10th at 8:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M.by Design Classification Chairman. 3. All entries will be removed on Saturday, Nov. 11th at 3:00 P.M. 4. Judging will begin Friday, Nov. 10th at 12:30 P.M. 5. The Classification Chairmen for each division will check exhibits for conformity to the schedule prior to judging. Final determination for conformance is the judges responsibility. 6. The General Chairman and the Classification Chairmen for each division are available during judging for possible consultations. They, along with the judges and clerks, are the only personnel allowed on the floor during judging. 7. The decisions of the judges are final. Awards may be withheld if not merited. 8. There must be an emphasis on FRESH plant material. No artificial plant material is permitted in any exhibit in any division. 9. Each exhibitor is limited to one entry per class, except in the Horticulture Division and the Botanical Arts Horticulture Division. 10. The National Garden Clubs, Inc. Standard System of Awards will be used, see HB Page 5 and Pages 41-43. All top awards will be presented, if merited. 11. Judging will be by National Garden Clubs, Inc. Accredited Judges in good standing. The judges decisions will be final. Awards may be withheld if not merited. 12. Entire group of judging panels for flower show does not select Top Awards, only the panel that has judged each eligible section. (Exceptions: Award of Horticulture Excellence and Award of Design Excellence). 13. Plant City Garden Club, Inc. will exercise all due care in safeguard ing exhibits but cannot assume responsibility for damage, loss or injury. 14. Design entry tags will be placed by the Design Entries Chairman. Horticulture Entry tags will be available the day of the show from the Horticulture Entries Chairman. 15. The Design Entries Chairman and Horticulture Entries Chairman will check entries to make sure they are in conformance with the Schedule and NGC Rules. 26 7

16. Native plant material, correctly labeled and legally obtained in the State of Florida may be entered and displayed. The use of plant material classified as Federal Noxious weeds or Florida Prohibited Aquatic Plants is prohibited. The use of plant material on Florida s Federally Listed Plant Species as endangered or threatened is prohibited. Consult list on file in the Plant City Library or on the web site of the University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) for these plants. Awards Basic Awarding: 1. The NGC Standard System of Awarding is used in all divisions a. Only one (1) first-place (blue) ribbon per class or sub class; must score 90 points or more. b. Only one (1) second-place (red) ribbon per class or sub class; must score 90 points or more. c. Only one (1) third-place (yellow) ribbon per class or Subclass; must score 80 points or more. d. One (1) or more Honorable Mention (white) ribbons as merited; must score 75 points or more. 2. Additional NGC Top Exhibitor Awards may be offered in each division. One (1) or more Section Awards may be offered, but only one Section Award per section. 3. Two Division Awards will be offered in Design and Horticulture, the Design Excellence Award and Horticultural Excellence Award. 4. One Botanical Horticulture Award, a Navy Rosette, will be given. Division Award is awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in the entire Design Division entered by a single exhibitor provided all general and design award requirements are met. Section Awards Offerred 1 Petite Award is a rosette of blue and white ribbons in Division I, Section A, classes 1-3. Exhibitor has freedom to choose all components and plant materials. 1 Table Artistry Award is a rosette of burgundy ribbons in Division I, Section B Classes 1-3. Exhibitor has complete freedom to choose all components and plant materials. 1 Designer s Choice Award is a rosette of purple ribbons in Division I, Section C Classes 1-3. Eligible for the Collector s Showcase Award, Class 1: Container-Grown Foliage Class 2: Cut Foliage Plants Class 3: Cut and Container-Grown Foliage Class 4: Mounted Foliage Plants Division I Designs Allied Campaigns Section A: The Asian Campaign Allied strategic planners envisioned the China-Burma- India Theater draining Japanese forces and equipment away from the US Island Hopping campaign aimed at the Japanese Home Islands. These designs are eligible for the Petite Award. Designer has complete freedom to choose plant material and other components. Four entries per class. Class 1: Flying Over Burma A Framed Spatial Design A 7 creative design organized as a single unit suspended from a hook within an oval green frame 9 1/2 high X 12 wide. This is provided by the committee. No actual movement is permitted, but motion is implied. Complete freedom to choose plant materials and other components. Staged on 1/4th of a raised card table with a black tablecloth and sitting on top of a stack of history books with a total height of 42. Class 2: Victory in China A 5 creative design staged in an open area and viewed from all sides. Designer s Choice of Design. Fresh and/or dried plant material may be used. Staged on a black platform 45 high, 11 deep and 44 wide. Each designer will have 11 by 11 and 45 from the floor. Class 3: Reflections on the Coral Sea 22 A creative reflective 8 design staged on 1/4th of a 24 square cream colored pedestal top, 36 from the floor. Divided by a cream colored divider. Designer s Choice of plant materials and components. 11

Section B: European Campaign The Allied strategy of Germany First required a buildup of forces, maintaining sea and air communications, isolating Germany, reducing German strength, and returning to Europe to defeat the German forces. The following three classes are eligible for the Table Artistry Award. Designer has freedom to choose plant material and other components. Four entries per class. All table classes must relate to the service of food. Class 1: Britain Celebrates the Miracle of Dunkirk A functional table for two staged on a 36 round table 27 from the floor. Table covering to be provided by designer. Designer has freedom to choose style of design. Class 2: Italy Celebrates Their Freedom Alfresco table for one. Staged on 1/2 of a rustic barrel 24" high with a 32" round natural wood top that may be covered by designer. The decorative Unit should be in proportion to the one place setting. Class 3: The Liberation of Paris An Exhibition Table with a completed flower arrangement using a black metal frame 18 by 36 provided by the flower show committee, and placed on 1/2 of a 6 table. Designer to provide background panel and top cloth. Section E: Harsh Environments Classes 1-12. Succulents other than Cacti. Container grown succulents. These designs are eligible for the Designer's Choice Award. Designer has complete freedom to choose plant material and other components. Four entries per class Class 1: The Pearl of the Pacific This is an underwater creative design having some or all plant material and other components under water. Those components underwater must contribute artistically to the overall design and are selected for their lasting quality. Staged on a round cream colored 24 pedestal 36 from the floor. And in front of a cream colored background. Class 2: Moon Over the Marianas A creative luminary design incorporating light/s for special effect and as an integral part of the design. Staged on an 18 square black pedestal 36 from the floor. Staged against a cream wall. Power will be available but designer may have to provide power cord. Class 3: Miracle at Midway A creative design staged on a 20 round cream colored pedestal 36 from the floor with a cream wall behind. 20 13

The rules for a single species cut or container-grown specimen are listed in the Handbook for Flower Shows or its supplement, Horticulture Exhibiting and Judging. 3. In order to receive an NGC Top Exhibitor Award, the exhibitor must identify her/his entry by its binomial name or currently acceptable scientific designation. Consult Handbook for Flower Shows, Exhibiting in the Horticulture Division, Chapter 6. 4. Entry cards are to be filled out in advance if possible. Refer to the Handbook for Flower Shows, Chapter 6 for a correctly filled out entry tag. 5. Cut specimens should not have foliage below the water line, except for Gladiolus. 6. DIVISION II - HORTICULTURE HORITUCLTURE DIVISION AWARDS OFFERED National Garden Club Top Awards may be given to a Blue Ribbon Exhibit scoring 95 or above. Top Section Awards HB pgs. 40-41 2) Arboreal Award: A rosette of green ribbons in two shades of green in Division II, Section H & I. Requirements: Quantity and quality, cultural perfection must be evident with a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 30 cut end to tip. Must be tree or shrub and include several nodes. All standards must be met, as with all other horticulture. 1) Award of Merit: A rosette of all orange ribbons will be awarded if warranted in Division II, Section J. All general Horticulture Award Requirements must be met. 1) Collectors Showcase: A rosette of brown and green ribbons in Division II, Section F, requirements listed on page 25 of the schedule. 6) Growers Choice Awards: A rosette of dark green ribbons will be awarded if warranted in Division II, Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D, Section E, and Section G.
