Introduction Dear reader! General The assessment of electrical installations and equipment with respect to their voltage status (voltage present or not) is always required when working on or with such installations, or in the vicinity of them. Following the result of such an assessment are usually a number of operations, for instance to earth and short circuit in those cases when absence of voltage has been determined. Consequently it is essential to have a clear and correct indication of voltage status. Absence of voltage can be determined in different ways. Besides firmly installed measuring or signaling devices, there is also the possibility to conclude on the voltage status from the switch position of earthing switches. Yet according to EN 50110-1, absence of voltage is to be determined as close to the working site as possible. So usually a portable device for determination of absence of voltage is indispensable. Such portable detectors need to be as handy as possible, and simple to operate, considering that absence of voltage needs to be determined on all phases at the working site. 5

Introduction General Difficult handling or slow signalisation may lead the user to abandon the procedure, especially when under time pressure. In the worst case this may have lethal consequences. On the other hand, the detectors themselves must not endanger the user. Their application needs to be safe even under disadvantageous conditions, such as heavy rainfall, or on the cross arm of a 380 kv overhead line pylon. In the course of many decades, a number of different portable devices for determination of absence of voltage, in brief voltage detectors, have been developed. Depending on type of electric installation (outdoor substation, indoor installation, GIS, overhead line, etc.), different detectors are used which have one feature in common: they give fast and safe indication about absence or presence of voltage in the installation. ARCUS has arranged voltage detectors in different groups, based on the intended usage of the detectors. We mainly distinguish between: ARCUSBASIC: for outdoor and indoor installations 6-20 kv ARCUSDETECT M: for outdoor and indoor installations up to 36 kv ARCUSDETECT H: for outdoor installations up to 420 kv ARCUSDISTANT (non-contact voltage detector): for overhead lines 110-380 kv ARCUSPHASE: for encapsulated switchgear up to 52 kv 6

Introduction General All these capacitive voltage detectors are adapted to their usage in an optimal way, and are configured to suit the individual customer requirements. Customised variations with different transport length, type of indication, or specific threshold values, in many cases can be considered. Also special requests, such as a different colour for the insulating rod, retrofit contact electrodes, or handle extensions are often possible to fulfil. This catalogue will give you an overview about our programme of high voltage detectors and accessories. We have arranged these products in the mentioned different groups to facilitate identification. Technical Information Voltage Detectors Overview of models (continued) ARCUSDETECT H: General For overhead lines and outdoor substations up to 420 kv (50 Hz) 3-part and 4-part For railway networks up to 132 kv (16.7 Hz) 3-part and 4-part Usage in factory-assembled, type-tested switchgear The high voltage detector can be used in factory-assembled, type-tested switchgear only under specific conditions. One needs to clarify with the manufacturer of such switchgear, if and where the high voltage detector is permitted to be used. Usage in IT-Networks (insulated networks) This voltage detector is not suitable for use in IT-Networks. Construction and function The high voltage detector is a portable device to determine presence or absence of operating voltage at the installation part to be tested. It has a one-part or multiple-part design, with a handle section LH, an insulating element Li, and a head part with insertion depth Ai (see pict.1 on page 11). The handle section LH is the area in which the high voltage detector is to be held during voltage test. The insulating element Li is located between the hand guard (4) and the limit mark (red ring) (2). It gives the user the required protective distance and sufficient insulation towards the installation part to be tested for absence of voltage. The insertion depth Ai is the part of the high voltage detector between limit mark (red ring) (2) and contact electrode (1). It reduces the influence of interference fields on the indicator (3). From contact electrode (1) in direction of handle, the high voltage detector may be inserted up to the limit mark (red ring) (2) between earthed or live installation parts, or may contact them. 10

Technical Information Voltage Detectors 1 Indication signal: Signalisation is effected by LEDs for visual indication and/or by a piezo sound element for audible indication (see pict.2). 4 3 2 LH Li Ai LO Single voltage and voltage range detectors: Beside our standard single voltage detectors, in addition our programme includes detectors for voltage ranges. This way one can cover a defined nominal voltage range with only one detector without the need to switch between single nominal voltages. Nominal frequency: ARCUS Voltage Detectors are designed for use in 50 Hz and 16.7 Hz power networks. Climatic conditions: Climatic category: N (normal) Temperature range: -25 up to 55 C Humidity: 20-96 % Design and interference fields: The voltage detector measures the electric displacement current which is generated by two different potentials in one system. Thereby applies, the higher the potentials are at a distance, the higher the displacement current. This means, when the contact electrode has contact with a live part, the indicator part is to be positioned to have as large a distance as possible towards other live parts. Particularly in substations, but also on overhead line towers with complicated arrangements, the complex field configuration requires an extension of the detector s contact electrode until the above mentioned actual situation applies. General Pict.1 This construction carries the category "S" for substations, and features a clearly higher safety of indication than the short construction L. For safety reasons we have decided to only offer detectors with category S, for substations as well as for overhead lines. Easy battery exchange: ARCUS voltage detectors are designed for fast and easy exchange of used batteries. Pict.2 ARCUSDETECT M: Visual and audible indication Simple operation: Use of light-weight components and multiple-part insulating rods secure safe and simple handling in substations, railway applications, and on pylons. 11

Technical Information Voltage Detectors Self-test device General According to EN 50110-1, voltage detectors are to be tested immediately before use, and if possible also after use. In all ARCUS detectors you will find a built-in self-testing device also called function check. Within the electronic circuit it tests all components. In case components or soldering points are not in good order, the self-testing device will recognise it and indicate the fault. Also the battery charge condition is included in the self-test. The self-testing device, whether built-in or as a separate device, needs to be able to test all electric circuits, including energy source and function of indication. In case it will not be possible to test all electric circuits, every limitation is to be mentioned in the instruction of use. These electric circuits must be produced with highest reliability. With a built-in self-testing device, the detector is to indicate its condition ready or not ready. IEC 61243-1 demands that all electric circuits which are not included in the self-test are mentioned. In our detectors, for safety reasons all electric circuits are self-tested without any limitation, even the contact electrode extensions including the contact electrode itself - up to 420 kv. Earthing arrangements Important for the correct indication of the detector is its area of application and the related earthing arrangement of the power network. We distinguish between one- and three-phase a.c.networks (three-phase current networks).
