Emergency Ligting Design Guide Step 1 Identify mandatory Points of Empasis for te positioning of luminaires, eamples as follows: FINAL EXIT EXIT SIGNS DIRECTION CHANGE INTERSECTIONS At eac eit door At all safety eit signs Witin two metres of a cange in direction Witin two metres of an intersection DIFFERENT LEVELS STAIRWAYS FINAL EXITS ALARM AREAS FIRST AID FIRE ALARM At a cange of level Witin two metres of eac staircase ensuring tat eac step is lit Outside witin two metres of eac final eit door Witin two metres of fire alarms, first aid points and fire figting equipment
Step 2 Ensure tat te eit signs are te correct format and size Signs wic are provided at all eits intended to be used in an emergency and along escape routes sall be illuminated to indicate unambiguously te route of escape to a point of safety. Were direct sigt of an emergency eit is not possible, an illuminated directional sign (or series of signs) sall be provided to assist progression towards te emergency eit. Please note sign formats sould not be mied. EXIT BS2560: 1975 Old-style signs now obsolete. Sould ave been replaced by December 1998 EXIT BS 5499 Pt 1 Acceptable but not recommended European Signs Directive Format Tis came into force on 1st April 1996 Maimum viewing distance: 200 100 Internally illuminated signs - 200 te panel eigt Eternally illuminated signs - 100 te panel eigt
1-2 - 3-4 - 5-6 Emergency Ligting Design Guide Step 3 Locate emergency luminaires at te following essential areas: ESCALATORS TOILETS LIFTS CONTROL ROOMS Escalators sould not be used as an escape route but requires illumination to protect users wen power fails Install in all toilets eceeding 8 square metres or were natural ligt is not present Emergency ligting to be provided in all lifts Motor generator, control and plant rooms for essential safety services HAZARDOUS AREAS OPEN AREAS INDOOR CAR PARKS Areas of ig risk sould be illuminated to 10% of normal ligting level or 15 lu wicever is te greater Open areas wit eiter a particular azard or an escape route passing troug it wen larger tan 60 square metres Covered car parks specifically escape routes
Step 4 Wen points of empasis and essential areas are covered it is necessary to provide additional luminaires to ensure tat te minimum illuminance level of 1 lu is acieved anywere on te centre line of an escape route. A uniformity ratio of 40:1 maimum to minimum must not be eceeded. Please note: Te UK as an A deviation wic continues to allow a 0.2 lu minimum value for routes tat are permanently unobstructed. Step 5 For open (anti-panic) core areas larger tan 60 square metres wit an escape route passing troug tem a minimum ligting level of 0.5 lu sould be provided. Tis ecludes a 0.5 metre perimeter of te area Eample of Design System Toilet Office (i) 4 2 Escalator b&e c& Plant room b a,b,c,f&k FIRST AID FIRE ALARM 3 Worksop (iv) e& Office (ii) Lobby 1 Lift Office (iii) d Acid Bat a,b&c e& d &f b
Step 1 Locate luminaires at points of empasis on escape routes. At eac eit door (A) Illuminate eit and safety signs (B) Near call points (C) Near eac staircase (D) Cange of direction (E) Near fire figting equipment (F) Cange of floor level (G) Near intersections of escape routes (H) Outside final eits (I) Near first aid points (K) Step 2 Ceck tat te maimum viewing distances of te eit signs are not eceeded. Please note tat for cinemas and teatres signs must be permanently illuminated wilst te building is occupied. Step 3 Identify additional areas tat require emergency ligting. Lift cars (1) Toilets greater tan 8 square metres (2) Escalators (3) Motor generators, control and plant rooms (4) Hig risk areas (5) Step 4 Ceck to ensure tat minimum luminance levels are acieved on te escape routes. Step 5 Ceck to tat open areas greater tan 60 square metres ave a minimum luminance level of 0.5 lu. (X) Te information above is intended as guidance in meeting te design requirements of BS 5266 Part 7: 1999. It is important to ceck wit te relevant local autority as some may impose additional requirements.
