How to Prepare for a Storm Your Family Your Property Your Pets Make an emergency plan with your family to ensure that all tasks are delegated and executed effectively and efficiently. Remember that time is of the essence. If you have children; keep in mind that children tend to stress and worry as a storm approaches, so to think of their emotional/ mental well being is important. To help the kids not worry and feel that they too are helping to prepare allow them to take part and tend after the animals needs and their own by asking them to get some of their favorite toys, blankets, etc and place them in a chosen emergency area in your home. If you need to evacuate give yourself ample time to do so that way you are sure not to be caught in traffic or not accepted in an emergency shelter due to overcrowding.

Be sure to put up shutters and secure all items big and small that are loose around the perimeter of your home. Remember that during a storm even heavy planters can be moved so be sure to place them as close to your house as possible. Photograph/ Video your home and vehicles for insurance purposes. Place all important documents, pictures, etc. in water proof containers or in a safe deposit box. Items of great importance should be placed in closets on shelves in the event of water damage or flooding. If you have a pool, do not drain it. Simply release a portion of water to avoid overflowing and add chlorine. Be sure not to put metal lawn furniture inside of the pool. Be sure to take your vehicles and fill the tanks. And if you have propane operated BBQ s be sure your tanks are full.

Items that should be stored: 3 gallons of water per person Bleach or purification tablets to distil water Ice Canned food/ non perishable foods 2 weeks worth of medicines Paper towels/ napkins Baby wipes Disposable plates / cups/ utensils Trash bags Aluminum foil Toilet paper Batteries Candles Waterproof matches Flashlights Charcoal/ propane for BBQ Propane operated stove Portable radio Manual can opener First aid kit Pet food Hand sanitizer Rubber Gloves Cash

After the Storm Health and Safety Issues Your first concern after a disaster is your family s health and safety. You need to consider possible safety issues and monitor family health and wellbeing. Aiding the Injured Assess injuries. Do not attempt to move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger of death or further injury. If you must move an unconscious person, first stabilize the neck and back, then call for help immediately. If the victim is not breathing, carefully position the victim for artificial respiration, clear the airway, and commence mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Maintain body temperature with blankets. Be sure the victim does not become overheated.

Health Issues Be aware of exhaustion. Set priorities and pace yourself. Get enough rest. Drink plenty of clean water. Eat well. Wear sturdy work boots and gloves. Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap / hand sanitizer often when working with debris. Safety Issues Be aware of new safety issues created by the disaster. Watch for washed out roads, contaminated buildings, contaminated water, gas leaks, broken glass, damaged electrical wiring. Inform local authorities about health and safety issues, including chemical spills, downed power lines, washed out roads, and dead animals.
