SECTON 1 SYSTEM OVERVEW NTRODUCTON The Simpex 4020 is a microprocessor-based Fire Aarm System. t is UL-isted, power-imited, eectricaysupervised, and protected against oss of primary AC power and brown-out conditions. The standard 4020 can contro up to 127 MAPNET @ points. Depending on options, the 4020 can contro a maximum of 254 addressabe points. Since a points in a system may not be addressabe, the 4020 aso offers up to 20 hardwired points (with 4 points standard) that can be used to interface with detector zones, be or horn circuits, and auxiiary reay contro. Each hardwired point is individuay configurabe as either a monitor point, a signa circuit, or as an auxiiary reay output, with up to 8 different points on a singe card. The 4020 offers a variety of ways to provide remote annunciation. t can communicate with the LCD annunciator, the SCWRCU, or the graphic SCWRCU. The RS-232 interface can be used to output to a printer or CRT. An aphanumeric dispay on the 4020 Operator nterface Pane (Figure 1) indicates the condition of the system. The aphanumeric dispay shows various prompts and abes which guide the user through a sequenced operation for each abnorma condition. Audibe and visua indications are provided to indicate abnorma conditions when they exist within the system. The 4020 capacities are as foows: Up to two MAPNET @ channes with up to 127 addressabe devices each for a tota of 254 addressabe devices Up to 20 hardwired points, configurabe as monitor, signa, or auxiiary reay points An RS-232 interface Up to 31 remote annunciator ocations, which can accommodate SCWRCU, graphic SCU/RCU, and LCD annunciators An 8-Amp switching power suppy, with a battery charger capabe of charging batteries with up to 50 Ah capacity. The defaut hardware for a 4020 incudes a master controer with a dispay, master troube points, city circuit, and tone-aert. The standard save modue uses three card addresses. Card (address) 1 W functions ike an 8-point mutifunction /O card, but ony the first 4 points are avaiabe. Card 2 is the power suppy card. Card 3 is the buit-in MAPNET@ channe. The foowing optiona hardware is aowed: An additiona MAPNET @ card Two eight-point mutifunctiona /O cards An RS-232 interface card configured with two isoated ports, with the abiity for one port to be dedicated to communications with a 2120 Mutipex System. NOTE: This document covers operating procedures for a typica 4020 system. Appications wi vary due to optiona hardware instaed, custom programming, and oca code requirements.

SYSTEM OPERATNG DESCRPTON The 4020 Operator nterface Pane, hereinafter caed the interface pane, shows the foowing under norma conditions: Green POWER ON LED ON (indicating that AC power is appied) A other interface pane indications OFF Aphanumeric LCD dispay states that the system is norma, as shown beow. SYSTEM S NORMAL 08:23:43 MON 04-APR-94 Abnorma conditions are indicated on the interface pane by fashing the aarm, supervisory, or troube LED and sounding the tone-aert. The aphanumeric dispay provides information as to the point status (aarm, supervisory, and troube), type of aarm (smoke detector, pu station etc.), number of abnorma conditions in the system, and a custom abe. Aarm, supervisory, and troube conditions each have their respective acknowedge key. Pressing the appropriate acknowedge key wi sience the tone-aert. However, the LED indicating the abnorma condition remains iuminated unti a initiating devices are restored to norma. Figure 1 nterface Pane (Access Door Cosed) f your system is configured with the CRT or printer option, point status is aso dispayed on these devices. The CRT option contros various system functions. t can acknowedge system status changes, sience aarm signas, and perform system reset procedures. When an initiating device (monitor point) senses a Fire Aarm Condition (heat, smoke, manua activation, etc.), notification appiances (signas) and the tone-aert sounds, and the FRE ALARM LED turns ON and fashes, indicating that a Fire Aarm condition is present. n addition, depending on the nature of the aarm condition, reays trip, the city circuit activates, and various programmed events occur. The tone-aert continues sounding unti the aarm is acknowedged. 2

When an initiating device senses a System Supervisory Condition (tamper vave off norma, generator status, etc.), programmed notification appiances and the tone-aert sounds, the SYSTEM SUPERVSORY LED on the interface pane turns ON and fashes, the city circuit may be activated (if required by oca codes), and various programmed events occur. The tone-aert continues sounding unti the condition is acknowedged or ceared. When the 4020 senses a mafunction within the system (oss of power, hardware faiure, etc.), a Troube Condition is announced by the interface pane. The tone-aert sounds steady, the SYSTEM TROUBLE LED fashes and various programmed events occur. The tone-aert continues sounding unti the condition is acknowedged or ceared. NOTE: When an operator interface pane key is referenced within this manua, it is normay shown between eft and right arrows. Exampes are cack> and <ALARM SLENCE>. A abnorma conditions must be acknowedged by pressing the cack> key under the appropriate fashing LED. Notification appiances are sienced by pressing the <ALARM SLENCE> key. NOTE: When you press the <ALARM SLENCE> key, the ALARM SLENCED LED turns ON steady. Depressing the <SYSTEM RESET> key restores the system to the norma operating mode if Fire Aarm Conditions have been acknowedged and restored. Depressing the <PRORTY 2 ALARM RESET> key on the CONTROL Key Pane restores the system to norma operation if Priority 2 Aarm Conditions have been acknowedged and restored. (A keys on the CONTROL Key Pane must be programmed for function.) The tone-aert may be programmed to sound at specified time intervas to serve as a reminder that a troube sti exists within the system (System Troube Reminder). The system has re-sound capabiity. f, after siencing the signas, the system detects another abnorma condition, the zone with the abnorma condition is indicated on the interface pane aphanumeric dispay, the appropriate indicator again fashes, and the signas again sound. To provide maximum efficiency in performing primary fire aarm functions, an interface pane access door, shown in Figure 1, covers a keys except those required for indication and interaction for emergency situations. (The access door must be opened to reset Priority 2 Aarm Conditions.) LOG N PROCEDURE NOTE: Various functions may be passcode protected to prevent access by unauthorized personne. Passcodes are provided to the user during system instaation. To change or receive additiona information concerning your passcodes, contact your oca Simpex Branch Office. To Log n, perform the foowing procedure. 1. Obtain the appropriate passcode information. 2. Open the interface pane access door. 3. Press the <MENU> key on the Dispay/Action keypad on the right side of the interface pane. The aphanumeric dispay shows the foowing message. Press <NEXT> or <PREVOUS> to scro Change Access Leve? 4. Press the <ENTER> key on the Dispay/Action keypad. The foowing message is dispayed. F=Login CURRENT ACCESS F2=Logout LEVEL = 1 3

5. Press the <F> key (above the aphanumeric dispay). The dispay shows the foowing message. Enter a Passcode foowed by <ENTER> 6. Enter the passcode (up to 10 numbers). Press the <ENTER> key on the ENTRY keypad. For security reasons, an X is dispayed for each digit of your passcode, as shown beow. Enter a Passcode foowed by <ENTER> xxx f the passcode is correct, the foowing message is shown. Enter a Passcode foowed by <ENTER> ACCESS GRANTED After a brief pause, the dispay shows the granted access eve, such as the eve 2 access message shown beow. F=Login F2=Logout CURRENT ACCESS LEVEL = 2 7. Press the <CLR> key twice. The dispay shows system status, as shown beow. SYSTEM S NORMAL 08:24:44 MON 04-APR-94 LOG OUT PROCEDURE MPORTANT FALURE TO LOG OUT ALLOWS UNAUTHORZED PERSONNEL ACCESS TO THE VAROUS PASSCODE PROTECTED FUNCTONS. F NO KEYPAD ACTVTY S DETECTED FOR TEN MNUTES, THE SYSTEM WLL RETURN TO LEVEL 1 ACCESS. Perform the foowing procedure to Log Out and return the operator access eve to LEVEL 1 status. 4

Aarm Sience Software Considerations The foowing software functions affect ALARM SLENCE operation. f a Coded nput Device is activated, the <ALARM SLENCE> key press may be ignored unti this function has competed coding. Notification appiances cannot be sienced when a coded station is in aarm. However, the fashing LED wi change from fashing ON to steady ON when the <ALARM ACK> key is pushed. The notification appiances sience automaticay upon coding competion. f the Aarm Sience nhibit Function is activated but not competed, the <ALARM SLENCE> key press is ignored. The message, ALARM SLENCE NHBTED, dispays for a short time to indicate the action was not taken. The message ALARM SLENCE NO LONGER NHBTED dispays when the inhibit function times out. f seected, the aarm sience inhibit may be programmed from 1 to 99 minutes. When seected, signas cannot be sienced unti the programmed time has eapsed. f Waterfow/Sprinker Devices are activated, notification appiances may or may not be sienced (depending on oca code requirements). SYSTEM RESET KEY The <SYSTEM RESET> key is used to return the system to its norma state after a Fire Aarm Condition has been ceared. When the <SYSTEM RESET> key is pushed, it causes any atched circuits to reset automaticay. Aso reset are initiating devices, reays (incuding the city reay), notification appiances, and a LEDs and indicators which are programmed to reset with the <SYSTEM RESET> key. The message, SYSTEM RESET N PROGRESS, dispays when the <SYSTEM RESET> key is pressed. When the Fire Aarm Condition has reset, the FRE ALARM LED fashes, and the system requires that the <ALARM ACK> key be pressed. When the <ALARM ACK> key is pressed, a message shoud be dispayed that is simiar to the one shown beow. Then disabe the identified aarm point with the <DSABLE> key. f the <DSABLE> key is passcode protected, perform the Log n Procedure before performing the Disabe Procedure. The <DSABLE> key press removes power to any dispayed monitor point. Thus, disabing a point causes a troube condition on the individua zone. To disabe a point, perform the foowing procedure. 1. These troubes incude Stye D ( Cass A ) initiating device circuit troubes, and reverse poarity city circuit troube conditions. f a monitor point intermittenty togges into troube, or wi not reset, you may choose to disabe that point, using the procedure given in the foowing paragraphs. F THE TROUBLE DOES NOT RESET f a troube condition does not cear after a device has been restored, press the <SYSTEM RESET> key. f the condition does not cear, or continuay togges troubes, the troube has not been corrected. Read the aphanumeric dispay on the interface pane to determine the ocation and type of device/point with the troube condition. You may choose to either disconnect the device, or to disabe the troube point by performing the Disabe Procedure given in the foowing paragraphs. HOW TO DSABLE A PONT WTH A TROUBLE CONDTON CAUTON DSABLNG A PONT CAUSES THAT PONT TO NOT REPORT ALARM CONDTONS OR OTHER STATUS CHANGES. A PONT SHOULD NOT BE DSABLED UNLESS T S CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD THAT FRE DETECTON OR SECURTY FOR THE AREA OF THE BULDNG COVERED BY THAT PONT WLL BE LOST. APPROPRATE STEPS MUST BE TAKEN TO PROVDE ALTERNATE MEANS OF PROTECTON FOR THAT AREA OF THE BULDNG WHLE THE PONT S DSABLED. f a point does not reset, you may disabe the point causing the troube condition. However, this point must first be identified. Press the ctbl ACK> key, and read the aphanumeric dispay on the interface pane. Then disabe the troube point with the <DSABLE> key. f the <DSABLE> key is passcode protected, perform the Log n Procedure before performing the Disabe Procedure. Note that the <DSABLE> key press removes power to any dispayed monitor point. Thus, disabing a point causes a troube condition on the individua zone. To disabe a point, perform the foowing procedure. 1. Open the interface pane access door. 2. Press the ctbl ACK> key unti the point to be disabed is shown on the aphanumeric dispay, as shown beow. Repeat steps 2 through 4 above to disabe additiona points. MPORTANT REPAR/REPLACE THE FALED CRCUT/DEVCE AS SOON AS POSSBLE. ONCE REPARED, THE DSABLED PONT SHOULD BE ENABLED AS SOON AS POSSBLE. (See Section 9, How To Enabe A Disabed Point.) TROUBLE NDCATONS FOR TrueAarm SENSORS NTRODUCTON The devices that are used for the TrueAarm operation are considered sensors instead of detectors, because these devices do not determine aarm conditions. The TrueAarmTM smoke sensor is a measuring device that sends data regarding smoke density to the 4020 contro pane. The TrueAarmTM heat sensor operates in a simiar fashion, but sends temperature data instead of smoke density data. The 4020 uses this data to determine whether a troube has occurred. This basic operationa difference is the key to TrueAarm operation. The TrueAarm sensor has two automatic troube indications: Dirty, and. Excessivey Dirty. A Smoke Detector Dirty troube condition is reported any time the average vaue on an individua sensor reaches a set threshod vaue. At this time, the 4020 is sti compensating for environmenta factors and is hoding the set sensitivity eve. A Smoke Detector Excessivey Dirty troube condition is reported anytime the average vaue of an individua sensor reaches a higher than threshod eve. At this point, the 4020 can no onger compensate for environmenta factors, and the sensitivity eve wi begin to drift. Athough an excessivey dirty troube is reported, the sensor wi continue to operate and wi report an aarm condition if one is detected. n addition to the two automatic troube conditions, the 4020 software incudes a pre-programmed digita pseudo point (P132, Sensor Amost Dirty Log Enabe) that can be turned ON at the front pane to aow a TrueAarm sensor that is within 10 anaog units of being a dirty sensor to report as if it were one. This is usefu when maintenance is being schedued for dirty sensors, as it provides a means of seeing if other sensors are approaching a dirty state. 19

Once a minute, the 4020 software performs a sef-aarm test of each TrueAarm sensor. The sef-aarm test raises the vaue of each sensor to a vaue that simuates an aarm condition. f the sensor reports back a vaue that is not within the aarm range, a sef-test abnorma troube wi be dispayed for that specific sensor. The foowing paragraphs discuss the responsibiities of 4020 system operators when these troube indications occur. ALMOST DRTY NDCATON Using the front pane keypads, it is possibe for a SMPLEX Fied Service representative to turn on a system point that aows an amost dirty sensor to report a troube. Athough the amost dirty sensor is hoding its sensitivity eve, the 4020 operator can schedue maintenance for the sensor before the dirty sensor troube occurs. DRTY NDCATON A Dirty indication means that the sensor is hoding its sensitivity eve, but that the 4020 operator shoud schedue maintenance for the sensor. Cean the sensor as required and, if necessary, ca Simpex for service. EXCESSWEL Y DRTY NDCATON The Excessivey Dirty indication means that the sensor is no onger compensating for dirt and dust. Because fase aarms are possibe with this condition, sensors must be ceaned as soon as possibe. f necessary, ca Simpex for service. SELF-TEST ABNORMAL NDCATON A 4020 system sensors are automaticay tested once every minute. f a sensor fais to report propery to the 4020 master controer, a sef-test abnorma condition occurs. Since the sensor is not working propery, it must be repaced. Repace it, or ca Simpex for service. 20

SECTON 4 SUPERVSORY CONDTONS NTRODUCTON A System Supervisory Condition is used to indicate the operative condition of Automatic Sprinker Systems and other systems used for the protection of ife and property. A Supervisory Condition may indicate that one of these systems is inoperative. NOTE: Refer to Figure 4 for ocations of interface pane LEDs and keys.
