OPTION 1 CITY CENTER New Library at Soldiers Square Soldiers Square Ramp Site The proposed project is an eight-story vertical mixed-use development that integrates the Library as the main feature in this urban design. In addition to the Library, uses also include ground floor retail/restaurant, residential and Flex space. The Flex space between the Library and residential component is intended to be office or future expansion of the Library. The L-shape footprint above the Flex space creates a massing form that embraces the three-story Library and gives the Library its own identity. Additional design features and description include: Library has its own identity Outdoor Plaza at West facing Houdini Plaza allows for:»» Public Art»» Outdoor Seating Reconfiguration of Soldiers Square allows for:»» Drive-through book return»» Bike parking Retail/restaurant at Northwest corner including outdoor seating Landscaped plaza and green roof for residents above Flex space Landscaped plaza and outdoor space for Library patrons at roof of Library Main Library entry at Southwest corner Main residential entry at East side of building Convenient parking added on East Lawrence Street and Soldiers Square One level of secured underground parking residents Bluff Site The proposed project is a seven-story mixeduse development that features an urban wrap. In addition to residential, uses also include ground floor retail/restaurant and parking. The housing wraps a five-story parking deck and keeps most of the parking hidden from view. The U-shape footprint above the parking podium creates a private outdoor amenity space for residents. Additional design features and description include: Retail/restaurant at Northwest corner including outdoor seating Retail/restaurant at Southwest corner and including outdoor seating overlooking bluff Direct entry units at ground floor overlooking bluff hides parking Landscaped plaza and green roof for residents above parking Main residential entry at West side of building One level of underground parking and four levels above grade parking serves the Library and public and includes secured parking for residents. OPTION 1 6 APPLETON PUBLIC LIBRARY MIXED USE

OPTION 1 Volume, transparency, and light define this soaring lobby. A landmark stair welcomes patrons and offers views out to the community and throughout the interior space. Bursts of color and activity draw the young and young at heart toward the entrance into the children s area, where vistas are nearly un-interrupted for the length of a city block. The collection can be artfully displayed and highlighted in this scenario with retail-like display blocks in this versatile space. Permeable and transparent connectivity to the creator space further enhances this vibrant zone. The slope of the lecture hall above gives this area an opportunity to dramatically showcase the building program above through architecture. MAIN LOBBY PERSPECTIVE 20 APPLETON PUBLIC LIBRARY MIXED USE

OPTION 1 The children s area celebrates literacy with whimsy and color. Moveable interactives, display, and color blocks create a forest at the threshold. Using a series of modules, the forest can be altered time or augmented over time. A permeable creator space with a colorful threshold can be closed or open as program needs evolve. CHILDREN S AREA ENTRY PERSPECTIVE 21 APPLETON PUBLIC LIBRARY MIXED USE

OPTION 1 The Lecture Hall has the potential to be a signature space in the new library and region. A full glass wall with electrochromic glass for light control creates a space that is both transparent and flexible. Graphic wood ceilings and walls with integrated lighting can be seen from the street below. As the portal adjacent to the stage leads to support zones beyond as well as elevator access, this lecture hall can do almost as much as a theater can. Films, visiting authors, and performance art this space can accommodate it all with links to the third floor as well as the green roof above. LECTURE HALL PERSPECTIVE 22 APPLETON PUBLIC LIBRARY MIXED USE

OPTION 2 BLUFF OVERLOOK New Library at Bluff Site Soldiers Square Ramp Site The proposed project is a six-story vertical mixed-use development that features urban housing. In addition to residential, uses also include ground floor retail/restaurant; the current solution would also accommodate a potential hotel if there was a demand for hotel in the marketplace. The U-shape footprint above the two-story parking podium creates a private outdoor amenity space for residents. Additional design features and description include: Outdoor Plaza at West facing Houdini Plaza allows for:»» Public Art»» Outdoor Seating Reconfiguration of Soldiers Square allows for:»» Bike parking Retail/restaurant at Northwest corner including outdoor seating Retail/restaurant at Southwest corner including outdoor seating Landscaped plaza and green roof accessible by residents above parking Main residential entry at East side of building Convenient parking on East Lawrence Street One level of secured underground parking residents Bluff Site The proposed project is an eight-story mixed-use development integrates the Library as the main feature in this urban design. In addition to the Library, uses also include ground floor retail/restaurant, residential and Flex space. The Flex space above the Library and parking podium is intended to be office or future expansion of the Library. The residential tower above the Library creates a sense of separation, gives the two-story Library its own identity and maximizes views. Additional design features and description include: Additional design features and description include: Library has its own identity Outdoor Plaza at NorthWest facing YMCA allows for:»» Public Art»» Outdoor Seating Retail/restaurant at Northwest corner including outdoor seating Retail/restaurant at Southwest corner and including outdoor seating overlooking bluff Direct entry units at ground floor overlooking bluff hides parking Landscaped plaza and green roof for residents above Library and above parking Landscaped plaza and outdoor space for Library patrons at roof of Library Main Library entry at Northwest corner Main residential entry at North side of building One level of underground parking and four levels above grade parking serves the Library and public and includes secured parking for residents. Patrons enter the building from an urban plaza, which functions as an extension of the lobby and entry space. Media collections and customer service locations blend into the central zone within the building. The adult fiction collection has views to the street and plaza beyond. Off the central customer service zone, teen services flank the creator demonstration space. In this location, the creator space can open up to this central service core to showcase user-created content. Flanking the other side of the creator space is children s services which connects to the river patio. The program room can be flexible to open to collections and the patio as well for large events or story time. We would suggest organizing this collection from oldest children to youngest along a natural age gradient in the space. Staff spaces with a dedicated loading / staff entry at the street allow for light in work areas as well as proximity to a staff only freight-sized elevator. FLOOR PLAN LEVEL 1 37 APPLETON PUBLIC LIBRARY MIXED USE

OPTION 2 The sloping lecture hall and primary stairs are on full display in this vibrant, flexible zone. Natural light is borrowed not only from collections spaces beyond but from above to brighten this interior hub. This landmark space is not only a mixing zone, but a way for users to orient themselves within the library. On the lower level, a dynamic entry to the children s collections creates a vibrant space, where on the level above, more quiet and reflective spaces abound. Imagine events and programming on the roof or community spaces. MAIN LOBBY PERSPECTIVE 39 APPLETON PUBLIC LIBRARY MIXED USE

OPTION 2 A tactile and interactive art installation fronts the entry to children s and teen spaces. Expansive views of stairs and vertical circulation bring users to the very heart of the library. Long vistas to the riverfront and patio beyond allow for children s services to have a unique bright and dynamic space. Flexible furniture, retail-like displays, and access to technology are defining characteristics in this zone. CHILDREN S AREA ENTRY PERSPECTIVE 40 APPLETON PUBLIC LIBRARY MIXED USE

OPTION 2 The interior of the lecture hall allows for visible connections to the library and well as to the outdoors. Sculpted wood ceilings with graphic wood patterned walls create a special feeling in this important civic asset. Spoken word, music, dance, and programs yet to be imagined can be shown and knitted to the adjacent library spaces through the use of color, materials, and transparency.
