Toilet rooms are in a good state of repair. Surfaces and floors are visibly clean. The toilet, sink and hand rails are visibly clean Hand washing facilities are available including liquid soap and paper towels A foot operated appropriate waste disposal bin is available (tiger stripe) Raised toilet seats / commodes are clean and in a good state of repair (check underside). CLEAN ROOMS/DRUG PREPARATION ROOMS The rooms are in a good state of repair. Surfaces and floors are visibly clean. There is an identified clean storage area for clean and sterile items. (Check inside cupboards, shelving and drawers). The rooms are free from inappropriate items. Hand hygiene facilities are available. Pharmaceutical fridge is clean and free from inappropriate items. All products are stored above floor level DIRTY UTILITY ROOM The room is in a good state of repair. The integrity of fixtures and fittings are intact Surfaces and floors are visibly clean Separate hand washing facilities are available including liquid soap and paper towels The room is free from inappropriate items. Appropriate facilities are available to ensure correct disposal of bedpans and urinals. The door is kept closed. Door handle is located on the inside of door only. Page 4 of 13

CLEAN STORAGE There is an identified area for the storage of clean and sterile equipment. The rooms are in a good state of repair. Surfaces, shelves cupboards and drawers are visibly clean. The area is clean (check floor and high and low shelving surfaces). The room is free from inappropriate items. All products and stored above floor level. DOMESTICS ROOM A domestic room is available, clean and in a good state of repair The room is in a good state of repair. Floors are free of dust/dirt. A good supply of equipment and materials is available Mops and buckets are stored according to the local policy. (inverted on shelves). Mop heads are laundered daily or are disposable (single use) Equipment used by the domestic staff is clean, well maintained and stored in a locked area Machines used for floor cleaning are clean, dry and stored appropriately. Chemicals used by domestic staff are stored in accordance with COSHH regulations (in a locked area) Products used for cleaning and disinfection comply with policy and are used at the correct dilution No inappropriate materials or equipment are stored in domestic s room Page 5 of 13

LINEN HANDLING/DISPOSAL Clean linen is stored in a designated area e.g. dry clean and enclosed cupboard. Linen is visibly clean and dust free Linen store is free from inappropriate items Used linen is segregated in appropriate colour coded bags according to policy Put in linen bags that are less than 2/3 full and capable of being secured Linen Bags are stored correctly prior to disposal Washing machines/tumble dryer s comply with local guidelines All linen is stored above floor level. WASTE HANDLING/DISPOSAL Waste segregation posters are displayed in clinical areas All waste bins in the area are foot operated, lidded and in good working order All waste bins are visibly clean and no more than 2 /3 full Bags are not observed in corridors. SHARPS SAFE HANDLING/DISPOSAL The containers in use comply with national standards (UN 3291, BS 7320) Containers Have not been filled above the fill line Containers are free from protruding sharps Have been assembled correctly Are stored safely and not accessible to patients or the public Sufficient selections of appropriate containers are available. E.g. Orange, yellow and purple if applicable Sharps trays are available for use and are clean Compatible containers are available for sharps trays in use. Used instruments are safely stored in an appropriate container prior to collection for CSSD. TREATMENT ROOMS Disposable paper towel is available and changed between patients. KITCHEN The floor is free of dust, grit, litter, marks, water or other liquids Fly screens are in place Cleaning materials used in the kitchen are identifiable (e.g. colour coded) and are stored separately to other ward cleaning equipment and away from food Hand wash sink, liquid soap and disposable paper towels are available Fixtures are in a good state of repair. Shelves, cupboards and drawers are clean inside and out. Kitchen trolleys are clean and in a good state of repair Refrigerators/freezers are clean and free of ice build up Staff food is not stored in catering fridge There is evidence that daily temperatures are recorded. Patient food/drinks (not supplied by catering), are not stored in fridges The fridge is free from pharmaceutical items All food products are within their expiry date All opened food is covered or stored in containers Milk is stored under refrigerator conditions Microwaves are visibly clean inside and out Water coolers are visibly clean.
