4 5 Masterplan for a stunning new district in the heart of Jeddah providing a major public amenity to the city s inhabitants. The masterplan is a significant draw for the millions of pilgrims and tourists who use Jeddah as the gateway to Makkah and Medinah. Only 26% of the project will be built up, with the rest set aside for public open space, with promenades, parks and boulevards. Facilities include food & beverage and retail outlets, a 450-bed hotel, an aquarium, cultural centre, a stunning dancing water display, botanical gardens and a Ferris wheel. Jeddah Waterfront

12 13 Prince Sultan Cultural Centre will provide housing for 15,000 people, while its centre-piece is a stunning cultural centre which celebrates Arabia past, present and future. Atkins masterplan incorporates all the components needed for a strong community: residential; culture; healthcare; education; retail; offices and commercial space; exhibition and hospitality; and an integrated public realm network. From any location within the development people will be within less than a five minute walk from green open space. The masterplan for the project has been designed to stimulate social wellness, encouraging ownership and involvement from the whole community to promote physical and mental wellbeing. 24 25 Atkins was commissioned to undertake the masterplanning and design of The Wave Muscat, a development stretching along 6km of natural beach coastline between Al-Athaiba and Al-Mawelah, scheduled for completion in 2017. Atkins is responsible for schematic and detail design documentation and supervision of the apartment complexes, town houses, villas, marine works and retail shopping precinct. The project covers an area of 230 hectares, with an additional 30 hectares through land reclamation to accommodate a 300-berth marina and yacht club which will boast internal waterways. The project also features an 18-hole championship golf course. The tourism sector of the project has luxury 5-star hotels and a wide range of retail and restaurant outlets. The Wave Muscat

40 41 Conceptually a necklace of pearls suspended from the southeast shoreline of the country, the Durrat Al Bahrain is intended to provide an exotic resort lifestyle. At the heart of the necklace is a crescent shaped island with shops, cafes, leisure facilities. The 20 sq km masterplan on reclaimed land consists of a broad arc of six man-made, serifshaped atolls each with an exclusive community of 172 villas that boast either individual yacht moorings or private beaches. 54 55 The Baku White City masterplan is a brand new environment, made up of seven identifiable mixeduse urban districts. Masterplan 4,800,000m 2 gross floor area, 75% will be residential. 50,000 people in 19,700 households with jobs for almost 48,000 people. The masterplan is woven together by a hierarchy of tree-lined boulevards, public squares and landscaped parks and gardens, which have been planned to make the most of the dramatic topography of the site. Key civic centres of commercial, retail and leisure activity are strung along a central spine running north from the coast of the Caspian Sea, which provides the city s southern boundary. 70 71 Business Bay is an existing mixed-use development comprising offices spaces, residences, hotel, retail outlets and community space. Total area of 80 million sq feet. Also includes villas, schools, medical facilities and private hospitals, all backed up by state-of-the-art telecommunications. Our vision is three pronged: to develop spaces between buildings to provide a cohesive design: to activate the waterfront by introducing green spaces along its frontage; and insert targeted development, both in terms of public space and individual buildings. 78 79 Mixed use development located on a 3.65 km long, 124 hectare linear site in Makkah, connecting the proposed high speed Haramain Station and the Third Ring Road to Al Haram. The centrepiece of the development is a grand pedestrian boulevard respectfully guiding pilgrims towards the mosque, lined with urban activity. Envisioned to promote the arts, culture and events scene by ensuring global exchange and promoting local talent, as well as serving as a vibrant events venue Masterplan incorporates luxury hotels, elegantly designed residential and serviced apartments, a retail plaza, waterfront promenades, recreational spaces and parks. Atkins-designed Dubai Opera provides a focal point to the district; the audience arrival experience through the plaza is an important part of the theatre of people surrounding the building.
