Introduction Installing the Device Handler Until the Device Handler is officially published by SmartThings, users must use their own Device Handlers for full functionality within SmartThings. See below for instructions: 1. Log into the Smarthings developer portal (https://graph.api.smartthings.com/) If you do not have an account, register by following the link on the page. 2. Click My Device Handlers in the navigation bar (fig. 1). Figure 1 3. Press Create New Device Handler (fig. 2). 4. Click the From Code tab (fig. 3). 5. Open a new tab, visit https://raw. githubusercontent.com/krlaframboise/smartthings/master/ devicetypes/krlaframboise/dome-motion-sensor.src/domemotion-sensor.groovy and copy ALL of the text. Figure 2 6. Paste the copied code into the text box, and click Create (fig. 3). 7. Now click Save (fig.4). 8. Finally publish it for yourself (fig. 5). 9. Now add the Motion Detector to your SmartThings system. Visit www.domeha. com/ for further installation and set-up instructions. Note: You should only add the Motion Detector to SmartThings AFTER the Device Handler is created. If you already added the device, remove it and add it again into your system, and the Motion Detector will automatically detect the Device Handler. Figure 3 Figure 4 10. Congrats, that s it! Keep reading to see how to operate the Motion Detector and create automations. Figure 5 Installing the Device Handler Page 2
The Interface Main Page The Main Page of the Device Handler displays the current status of the Motion Detector (Motion or No Motion) and also the battery level. See below for an overview of the interface: 1. Main Status This section displays the status of the Motion Detector: Motion and No Motion. The status is displayed with both text and the background color. 2. Light Level Feedback This area dispalys the current ambient light level. 3. Light Level In addition to monitoring for motion, the Motion Detector also reports ambient light levels. This tile displays the current light level in Lux and will report values from 0~65,535. 2 1 4. Refresh This button refreshes the page so all of the settings and statuses are accurate and current. 5. Battery Level This displays the remaining battery life. 3 4 5 Main Page Page 3
1. Enable/Disable LED This enables or disables the LED that blinks when Motion is detected (default Enabled.) 2. Motion Cleared Delay This sets how long the Motion Detector waits before sending a No More Motion signal (default 30 sec.) 3. Motion Detection Sensitivity This sets how sensitivet the Motion Detector is to motion. (Default 3.) 4. Light Reporting Interval The Motion Detector reports ambient light levels intermittently. This sets how often Lights Levels are reported (default 3 min.) 5. Light Reporting Sensitivity In addition to periodic Light Level reports, the Motion Detector also sends Ambient Light readings when a change in brightness is detected. This sets how much of a chance is needed before the light level is reported (default 13.) 6. Wake Up Interval This sets how often the Motion Detector reports to SmartThings to accept settings, etc. The Interface Settings Page The settings page allows the user to change several properties of the Motion Detector, including LED functionality, wake up interval, and the battery reporting interval. To access the settings page, simply press the Gear icon on the top right corner in the main device page. 7. Battery Report Interval This sets how often the battery level is reported to SmartThings Settings Page Page 4
Automation & Security Get a Notification When Motion is Detected SmartThings can notify you (with a text message, push notification, or other method) when the Motion Detector detects motion when you re not home. Follow the steps below to be notified when the Motion Detector is tripped: 1. Open the SmartThings app and go to the Dashboard tab (fig. 1). 2. Press the Gear icon in the top right corner and tap Security in the list that appears (fig. 2). 3. This page lets you select which sensors are monitored when the Smart Home Monitoring SmartApp (SHM) is set to Armed (Away) mode. Toggle Use every open/close and motion sensor, tap Motion Sensors, select all of the sensors you wish to trigger the Alarm, and tap Done in the top right corner (fig. 3). Figure 1 Figure 2 4. Tap Next in the top right corner. 5. This page lets you select which sensors are monitored when SHM is set to Armed (Home) mode. Toggle Use every open/ close and motion sensor, tvap Motion Sensors, select all of the sensors you wish to trigger the Alarm, and tap Done in the top right corner (fig. 4). 6. Tap Next in the top right corner. Figure 3 Figure 4 7. Here you can also choose the types of notifications you will receive. By default, you will receive Push Notifications on your phone (fig. 5.) 8. Select how you want SmartThings to react when motion is detected. SmartThings will now respond accordingly whenever motion is detected and Smart Home Monitor is Armed. Automation & Security Turn on a Light When Motion is Detected SmartThings can automatically turn on your lights when the Motion Detector senses motion. Follow the steps below to automatically illuminate your life when the Motion Detector is tripped: 1. Open the SmartThings app, go to the Automation tab, and tap Add a SmartApp (fig. 1). 2. Select Lights & Switches from the list that appears (fig. 2) then select Smart- Lights (fig. 3). 3. Select Which ligths do you want to control? and select the lights you want to turn on (fig. 4). 4. Select if you want the lights to turn On or Off, then tap Select trigger and select Motion (fig. 5). Figure 1 Figure 2 5. Tap Which motion sensors?, select the motion sensors you want to trigger the lights, and press Done (fig. 6). 6. Tap Turn on when and select if the light should turn on when motion is detected or cleared. 7. Tap Next in the top right corner. 8. Rename your automation if you wish and tap Done to finish.
