Cultivation information MILLIONBELLS CALIBRACHOAHYBRIDS Flowering characteristics As bedding plants, Million Bells need a good amount of light to be able to flower. Increased light levels and longer days stimulate flowering. The more light, the better. Young Plants Start with certified clean material from one of the official Moerheim New Plant dealers. Official dealers are obliged to deliver you each plant including a consumer/promotion label. After arrival, water the plants when necessary, keep them free from frost, pot them as soon as possible and do not let the plants stay on the trolley for long. Bigger plugs can be planted later as they will start off faster. Potting compost Use a good bedding plant mixture that will drain enough, can contain enough moisture and has a good structure. Roots of calibrachoa in general are fine and sensitive to drying out and also to excesses of water. ph should not be higher than 5,5, otherwise you give black root rot more chance. Preferably ad 2 3 kg slow release fertilizer per 1 m3 mixture. Add some chelated iron. Potting Minimum size of pot should be 10 cm. Use new pots. Watering To get a compact plant it is wise not to water excessive and do not let the plants dry out too much. The best is to give some water regularly and keep the moisture medium on, the low side. Too much water in the medium will make the Million Bells prone to root diseases! Drying out the medium too much will give root damage! Climate Temperature: After potting, a higher temperature is required like 18-20 C. Maintain this temperature for about 2 or more weeks. This for the roots to grow out of the plug fast. After this period a growing temperature between 12 and 16 C can be used as a normal greenhouse temperature. Keep the plants growing. Air humidity: For a compact and hardier plant a low air humidity is preferred. A humidity which is too high makes the plant inactive and prone to root rots. Keep the plant active by letting it evaporate with dull weather. Open ventilation on time. Light: More light and a longer day will stimulate flowering and growth. CO2: Million Bells will probably react positive to higher CO2 levels. Please ask Moerheim New Plant for their latest knowledge. Growth regulating In general it is not difficult to grow Million Bells. To keep the plants compact enough: Take care with watering, do not give them too much water. You can use a cold morning strategy: from 1 hour before dawn until around 10 am you can let the temperature drop to around 7 C. Pay attention: if temperature is not compensated it can delay your crop. Use growth regulators, please check out the terms of using growth regulators in your country. Some growers grow without any growth regulator. Alar is used with 3 grams per litre. Frequency of spraying with Alar is only once or few times. There is no need to use a lot of growth regulator. Different chemicals can be used in different countries. Apply regulators when plants are stretching too much. Bonzi is very powerful and should be avoided or used with utmost care (low concentration, low frequency). Give plants enough space and keep the environment dry. High daily temperatures promote stretching. Crop protection General: Sensitive for virus, aphids and black root rot. Always test a new or unknown chemical on a few plants of all varieties before you apply on large scale. Red or cherry varieties seem to be sensitive to spray damage on the flowers. Biological control is also possible, check with your supplier. Fungi: Thielaviopsis basicola, a root rot disease, can be a problem and can kill the plant. Be hygienic: use new pots and a clean floor. Medium ph around 5.0, water regularly, do not damage the roots by excessive drying, use good draining medium and quality potting soil. Analyse the disease when possible. Check or ask for the Moerheim Thielaviopsis info. Pests: Virus vectors should be controlled, Aphids are f.i. controlled by Admire (imidacloprid) or (many) others. For spidermites (and thrips) can you use Vertimec (abamectine). Others: Virus is not a problem if you use certified and clean young plants. In the greenhouse work with hygiene, start with a clean greenhouse. Put up a warning for smokers to wash their hands before entering the greenhouse.
